  • Lol just a minute ago I saw his other interview with letterman and he looked great! :D And in this one ....he looked like a hobo -.-

  • Joaquin Phoenix,I had never heard of him until walk the line came out.Now he is one of my favorite actors. His brother River was a good actor too.

  • @FightForTruth2011

    Here here

  • joaquin phoenix = jim morrison 1969............

  • he cried after the interview, he's a train wreck and far less intentional than charlie sheen

  • I am amazed by the dedication he showed to this form of performance art by allowing himself to deteriorate so much physically. He was so fat and bloated by the end that he looked as though he could drop dead from a heart attack at any moment. It's going to take a lot of hard work to get back into shape, which he may well regret. De Niro really struggled after 'Raging Bull' to lose all that weight and said he'd never do that again.

  • COME ON PEOPLE I CALL BULL SPIT...NO ONE can claim now after the fact that they knew he was faking, at best you were on the fence. All I used to read is that he followed in his brothers foot steps people would go on tangents about how everyone in Hollywood is on drugs and a bunch of other crap. Just admit you were fooled and at best you were not 100% sure if it was a hoax or not but that you THOUGHT and only THOUGHT THAT IT JUST MIGHT BE a hoax but YOU were unsure. JUST ADMIT IT HE IS GOOD!

  • @ilichalopez Well I for one said that it was a hoax from the moment I saw him and I was never on the fence as you call it, he did a good job but I was not at all convinced. My only other concern was that he may have been mentally ill but I thought that to be far less likely than the real reason for this masquerade.

  • i cant hear him !

  • Not a hoax, sadly. Watch "I'm Still Here". It tells all.

  • sjebo ga je vrhunski :) dobra gluma, nema šta...

  • @zukowski2008 perhaps not quite as dumb as you think. BY the way, i take drugs and i am God

  • yes it's a hoax gosh wake up and smell the coffee (/sarcasm)

  • @zukowski2008 ever see the Letterman interview with crispin glover? Seems like Joaquin was emulating that interview.

  • @zukowski2008

You´re totally owned by Joaquin, get Troll´D son

  • @zukowski2008 LOLLLLL

  • yup it is

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe it Is Joaquin's way of exposing how gullible the world is. Everything we see on T.V. must be a reality. I don't know how many people all of a sudden turned on the poor guy and were accusing him of being high on National television.

  • wtf is he trying to pull? there is only ONE Andy Kaufman! knock it off !

  • I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss this as being ENTIRELY a stunt or a hoax until Phoenix himself says it is...get it straight from the horse's mouth, I would say.

  • I kind of think that Letterman knew, had to start someplace. But, did not fool me. since he has been nominated for an Academy Award twice, I think that he can act.

  • He really IS the best actor in his generation! Sure fooled me.

  • People seriously can't tell that he's reeeeaaaalllllllyyyy high? Not stoned, high.

  • Well, obviously.

  • I wish more people would fuck with letterman like this

  • wether yhou think he's acting or not, you have to appreciate how funny that was.

  • Joaquin doesn't have to have a loyalty to his so-called 'fan's'. Hollywood & the whole celebrity/fan thing is the biggest farce, it's a super colossal joke, & I for one am glad to see Joaquin poke fun at the entire phony industry...& by the way, if anyone thinks he is serious, that this is not a well-orchestrated prank, well folks, come on....Hollywood takes life & shreds it into an unrecognisable mish-mash of gobbledygook they call 'art'....it's not real, its slick hyped-up fiction at best

  • letterman is such an asshole

  • @MsAnnablack he should have retired a long time ago

  • hopefully some day finds peace with God in his heart its sad to see a soul with out the love of God jesus christ amen...

  • @H2motion shut the fuck up its obviously a hoax.

  • @coltong400 and dumass no one is telling u maybe u are the hoax or need GOD in u satan hahahhhahaha

  • @H2motion Oh jeez. Please leave religion at home. Im religious also but you dont see me trying to spread my religion on the internet.

  • I love when Dave says "it's too bad you couldn't be here tonight" or something similar, lol!

  • I'm afraid he's going down the same road his brother River did. And that's bad for him and his career.

  • @coolwhipspecial Death definitely is a terrible career move.

  • I can't comprehend how extraordinarily gullible you have to be to not see this is fake.

  • He has bi-polar disease. Hope someone will get him help. One of my fav actors.

  • @haelcm thats when someone is carzy or angry right?

  • hes wearing glasses either to hide that hes drunk or to hide that hes not drunk or high

    idk my opinion

  • It's totally obvious that Phoenix was putting on a stunt, his reaction time to the audience and Dave's comments were too quick for your average drugged-out junkie. Besides, this dude is one of the BEST actor's of our generation, he was bored and wanted to do something "outside the box" with his bro-in-law.

  • @TheBangorguy dont say "It's totally obvious that Phoenix was putting on a stunt"

no one dared to believe that it was a stunt but since the word is out, everyone is like "o yeah i knew it, he was doing the andy kaufman thing.... it was pretty obvious to me"

  • @koldproxy THANK YOU!, I agree now everyone knew it was a stunt what a bunch of BS.

  • @TheBangorguy "average drugged-out junkie" Who says he's trying to act like a "drugged-out junkie"??

  • it's quite telling wen u hear what the name of the mocumentary is I'm still here he's saying he hasn't gone he's still there

  • It's all a dramatic art stunt. Seriously. He will do another real movie role half a year after "I'm Still Here" is out in theaters.

  • I don't care if the dude is faking, he is acting like a dick

  • @Mattman003 watch the full interview. It's totally obvious that Phoenix was putting on a stunt, his reaction time to the audience and Dave's comments were too quick for your average drugged-out junkie. Besides, this dude is one of the BEST actor's of our generation, he was bored and wanted to do something "outside the box" with his bro-in-law.

  • Joaquin is releasing a documentary right now about this...it's quite clearly a clever act! Dont believe me? Then research "I'm still here"...

  • If someone walked up to me with rope and said hang me I would not hang them.

  • When I first saw this, it caught me off guard and was blown away by his behavior. And that's ok if he burned Phoenix all throught out the interview, we ALL got to burn Letterman's unfunny ass when he came out with his bitch ass scandal. Hoax or not, Joaquin slapping his gum underneath the desk was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time!! And then asking Paul why in the hell is he giggling at when nothing's clearly funny was an OWNED moment!

  • the parents should not have named him that

  • Letterman is old hat at dealing with this kind of stuff considering he had Andy Kaufman on his show many times doing the same kind of is real or not act

  • to bad

  • it seems like he's trying to copy andy kaufman

  • I don't understand why people think he is so crazy in this interview. The way I see it, he is probably a little nervous about retiring and switching careers, plus letterman is making dueshy passive aggressive comments ("Can you tell us about your days with the unabomer"). I would feel awkward in that situation too. Plus the audience is borderline psychotic. Perfectly normal awkwardness to me.

  • @bennett5058 it actually DID turn out to be a hoax... supposedly. Casey Affleck directed a movie (mockumentary specifically) about joaquin phoenix trying to be a rapper and this huge fallout in his rap career.

the movie is reportedly coming out within the next year but idk if the movie is just a cover up for all of these events or if this is seriously just some career stunt to help boost interest and controversy for this film.

  • @thecool702 The movie is coming out in September. It`s called "I`m still here".

  • @petelabeat i know. but at the time i posted the comment, all this news was still barely coming out.

    september 10th to be specific.

  • @thecool702 ... its coming out in september, its called im still here

  • @thecool702 no he just apologized yesterday

  • @thecool702 Yeah its awesome he had me like most people and i was like god dammit what happened to you Joaquin then i fond out it was part of a mokumentary and the world seems right again.

  • @heavenlydemonic23 explain to me what happened please :P im confused :)

  • @irlegendz He was putting on this whole thing about how he was quitting acting and becomming a rapper. It was for a mocumentary but he had a lot of people thinking it was real. He went on letterman all fucked up acting. Anyways it was all for that movie and what not

  • @irlegendz Hey, lazybones, you obviously have a computer, just google the guy and investigate the whole story like us other mortals did instead of asking to be spoonfed the information.

  • @sleepypoodle Sorry, i had more important things to do. I thought i may aswell ask .Did i ask you? No. So shut the fuck up and lighten up a bit.

  • @thecool702 You over analyze it to the point to where it's just ridiculous. It's just a hilarious joke, lmao.

  • @bennett5058 And proper order that Letterman takes the piss. If someone walks up to you with a length of rope and says 'hang me', you'll hang em.

  • i think it a hoax.I reckon he wearing glass's as youd be able to tell he not on drugs if they visable

  • @YoJimBoHugabaJoe

You can fake being stoned wether you can see the eyes or not.... actors do it in movies all the time unless they are really stoned for their movie roles (which I doubt).

  • @paulosio fake stoned is one of the easiest things to see in the galaxy, hardly no stoned man acts like they do in the movies were they have 1 drag on a joint and instantly the way they walk and talk changes

  • the guy is a really good actor people, he's been nominated for an oscar twice...is it really so hard to believe that the guy is faking it?

  • He's on some heavy shit.

  • storyline: Joaquin Pheonix becomes famous actor, grows beard and hair, plans to change career, everybody starts making theories, he fools alot of people, films what he is doing, realeses it, and it becomes one of the funniest documentaries of all time. end of story

  • @Abe91195 i hope your right

  • i read in mum celebrity goss magazines hes being helped out of suicidal brink by miley cirus or some other unusal celebrity... definately a young, pop star or acrtress anyone else read bout this... reat actor: best one is 'We own the night'

  • He's turned into Andy Kaufman! :O

  • This was a prank. He really does it well because he is such a good actor. If you notice closely there area couple times where he almost cracks..he is trying hard not to laugh... but then he is able to compose himself. Plus for everyone who is concerned look him up or something. He is Ok. He has been seen plenty of times acting like his usual self. This was hilarious.

  • what a good actor...god..i hope he gets bk if he's suffering from anything

  • It's not a hoax... I'm watching it now.

  • i can tell you this. something did happened. when?

well i remember watching one time oprah and he was on that show with some other actors. he came out first to talk with oprah then others came after. i remember he was not at his best. he was very shy and nervous. he couldn't talk normally. he was dressed in a black suit and i think it was one other male and female actors who joined after about 5 minutes. it was somethin about one movie. that was the period something did happened to him

  • how exactly would this "hoax" benefit Joaguin?

  • @stupaod well it is. a mokumentary for casey affleck

  • @brandon10482

if it is a hoax then hes probably the most amazing actor on the planet

    I don't believe its a hoax

I think hes got some issues and had enough of the corrupt movie industry that wants him to do things hes not comfortable with

his brother was not a fan of the industry either

  • Are you guys just that stupid - no messed up guy would walk that well to the chair. This is what is called being had - the guy is "acting" - that you can't see that just means you are blind.

  • It wasn't a hoax. If you watch the full video, you'll see that Letterman was extremely disrespectful to Joaquin early on. That's when he pulled back and stopped being receptive to Letterman. Definitely not a good choice for his PR, but justified by Letterman's rudeness.

  • people named joaquin are interesting and cool

  • alot of people keep saying its all a joke. that may be a possibility but honestly if it were a joke i think he would have fessed up to it by now.. i think hes serious. hollywood does this sort of thing to people all the time. why are we so suprised? what he needs is people to love him unconditionaly he needs jesus! :)

  • it was a hoax to get attention to his new rap career

  • @Katibug16 The longer he doesn't "fess up" to it, the better the effect and the better the joke. He even has that dipshit Dr. Drew worried for him - dumbass - that he is

    .

  • @Katibug16 but christians go to hell wen they die

  • @JayZeelz - Excuse me?? I think you are very mistaken!!!

  • vegan humor!

  • Why would somebody pretend to be a drug addict. That's not funny. His brother died of drug overdose. Face it, he is a looser drug addict.

Face reality, he was a great actor now he is just a another junkie.

  • @tryanjohnson

He wasn't pretending to be a drug addict. If it is just for a fake documentary (I believe it is) then he was pretending to be an actor transitioning to music. People assumed he was/is on drugs.

  • @lavinder11 I don't know. I think you know more about conspiracy theories than I do. LOL.

  • @tryanjohnson

Yeah, I do but I don't. Anyway, did you hear the news about the documentary being 'strange' and how they're looking for a buyer? It seems like this was a good idea gone horribly wrong.

  • @lavinder11 Wikipedia: "In an interview given earlier the same day[as Letterman] for CinemaBlend com, Phoenix seemed completely coherent.[37]" . . ..

Also, he did the PETA ad after Letterman. He is reported to have said “It’s a put-on. I’m going to pretend to have a meltdown and change careers, and Casey is going to film it.”

    |

Bottom line is that the guy is a great actor and we are at his mercy. I think he is still messing with our heads. God Bless his hilarious self.

  • @tryanjohnson

Thanks for that, I didn't know about those interviews. Hopefully they didn't bruise too many egos to where he wouldn't be respected as an actor anymore.

  • Joaquin Phoenix is totally spun out on dope. Fucking looser. All his money going to drug dealers. He should be shot.

  • @tryanjohnson - You're horrible!!! Nobody should "be shot" just for having a drug problem! And he is NOT a loser! Get your act together.

  • @tiffiecole Actually, the whole thing is a hoax. So the joke in on us. Anyway, lots of people are murdered and other people's lives are ruined because of the drugs trade.

  • a bunch of people think it's a hoax

a bunch of people think he's 'on' drugs

a few of us think he's sick of hollywood & the BS

  • gwyneth paltrow oh yeah LOL

  • Is there any real proof that this is all just an act? OR is it just assumption?

  • JOAQUIN IS FOOLING U ALL.

This is just a demonstration of his brilliant acting. If he were on drugs, as many people seem to be assuming, why the hell wud Casey Affleck (his bro in law and presumably a nice guy) be following him around with a camera instead of getting him help......?

THIS IS A MASSIVE, FREAKIN FUNNY PRANK.

  • @dancedanceterminator wow so hes mockin his bro

  • I think that its just funny that people don't get it....he is acting. And I can finally say that I've seen it all...people on youtube that give a diagnosis on a person's health and mental conditions just by seeing a video....and i can bet that you are not a doctor and if you were....you must be a really bad one....

  • guarentee its a hoax, honestly u can tell he is performing, and u can see where he loses his focus every now n then with like a smile or a small laugh.

  • Hes gotta be into some deep shit like heroin to be this fucked up.

  • This man needs help....

  • Gotta give it to letterman,he managed to made a funny interview even when joaquin didn't want to talk at all

  • hahaha cant wait for the mocumentary to come out

  • YES! This was a publicity stunt and was all planned. He's a damn good actor, because he's got a lot of you convinced he was drunk, high, or a mental case.

  • i think it was fake because at the end joaquin shakes lettermans hand and takes off his sunglasses, but who knows he might be on drugs or he is a really good actor, maybe all of the above.

  • @krumplatino

This is not a hoax. I'm afraid that Phoenix suffers from a psychic illness, mental pain, psychological problems, call it as you prefer.

He's sick, but not sick as you often mean it, as "bitterly funny". He's sick in the sense that he feels unwell and needs cures, medical treatment.

  • your a fag and suck at life

  • @ACanadian19

    What?? o_0

  • @ACanadian19

I just spoke the truth concerning Phoenix, so what's the matter about that?

  • Comment removed

  • Hope is acting...really hope. Cause if he's not, I'm really concerned about him...

  • same here \:

I saw another interview were he was weird, i don't know if he's on something or has bi-polar or is just doing it on purpose, but i want Joaquin back D:

  • How can you be concerned about him when my dog has pancreatic cancer? You are so insensitive.

  • Yes I am.

And I'm a bad girl, I joke with people, and I'm on drugs. Like Joaq.

    Happy now?

  • I am really happy, What kind of drugs?

  • I can tell you but then I have to kill you...that's a secret, you know...

  • Lola I beg of you - come kill me!

  • You beg me???????? :D

  • Being that this is Christmas we dont need anyone dying on us if avoidable. So I was thinking.. maybe you could just tie me up and beat me? Ha!

  • You can't kill me, for I am unkillable.

  • @zoomerlawns is your dog taking chemo?

  • No, but he is doing a lot of exercises and yoga and stuff. He's also eating only soy based foods and drinking wheatgrass juice.

  • its called acting folks. he probably reads these comments and laughs his ass off.

  • it's called heroin folks.

  • Here's the dead give away. At the end of the interview, Phoenix approach the (Bed)Wetterman and shakes his hand. He slyly lifts his sun glasses and presumably winks.

This is an act, probably the best act in modern times.

  • Not a single person can say with 100% certainty that he is just acting or he is on drugs. We do not know! We can only speculate. But i have to say, he doesn't have a single interview where he acts normal after he grew his beard.

  • thats what makes it a good act

  • what if he's actually serious, how can you tell? you don't even know him.

  • he's making some sort of andy kaufman inspired flim with casey affleck. phoenix is a genius- i'd call this avant-garde acting for sure. he's got you fooled

  • But why bother? it's an interview, not a film? why get people thinking your on something?! Makes no sense D:

  • It is an act of Casy's films.

  • andy kauffman (excuse the spelling) revisited. It's a prank. Watch right at the end when dave says I'm sorry joaquin (excuse the spelling) couldn't be here tonight, that smile and laugh is because he knew it was funny and it temporarily broke his character.

  • He's on Heroin, everyone's laughing and making fun now but when he ends up dead everyone will feel sorry for him and talk about how wonderful he was like they do everyone else that has died from that shit. It's not funny, he needs help.

  • I agree with you 100% couldnt have said it better

  • But do you think he would do those drugs considering his brother River overdosed at 23?

  • Got to say - not that funny is it really - don't know what's up with the audience. It's embarrassing all round. This Letterman chap is a bell end. Sicko.

  • no he hasn't

  • no he didnt, dickhead.

  • He's serious i saw him in the groove in miami rapping and he jump off the stage and went nuts on some dudes that were moking him... he's on something, weird dude... brilliant actor

  • Maybe he used real drugs in Walk the line and got addicted.

  • LOL

  • When I saw this first I thought he's definitely joking, don't know though... Anyway, let's not be mean.

  • Definitely not a hoax..... b/c Phoenix made his "rapping" debut in Vegas and fell over at the end of his performance... probably b/c he was so HIGH... he is a VERY talented actor and I hope he gets some help.... still a HUGE fan

  • it wasnt a hoax. he really went on the show and acted like this. it was no skit. and as for the rapping, can't wait to hear his first album!

  • this isn't a skit, but he's on something.. he's acting like an asshole because lettermans an asshole

  • This HAS to be a skit. WTF Joaquin????

  • its not a hoax....hes just got some serious issues

  • Yea sure. Then why is Casey Afflek running around with a camera and filming it all the time. and when they ask him he just say "uuuhhhmmmm" i have to go. Your easily fooled. Yes i know. I got some spelling wrong. Second language.

  • @UKisland82 sadly i think so too!

  • @UKisland82 What issues? Im serious

  • i doubt he was acting. he may have been smiling at some moments, but he's too good of an actor to break character.

  • yea. it's not funny really. more sad than anything.

  • @LionelLiberty he´s slurrying,he does not know whyt is going on!

  • @LionelLiberty Really? I thought this interview was very entertaining.

  • haha wow... I'm sure it had nothing to do w/ homosexuals... more likely he is addicted to a drug(s), and is in a diff state of mind... Obviously the film industry, specifically Hollywood is full of douchebags, but there are plenty of genuine people as well who want to make good films... I don't blame him for leaving acting b/c it's his life and he can do as he pleases... but after seeing this interview, he is clearly have some substance-abuse problems.

  • Maybe because he's a rapper now...someone will try and pop a cap in his ass. Not kill him, but shoot his butt crack off! And really, the "Old Joaquin" wasn't any great shakes to begin with!!

  • Wow its Jim Morrison!

  • He it acting.....

  • It's for real As Casey hinted, it's a little bit of both. Joaquin Phoenix is never going to "break character," or admit the rapping was all a hoax, because it's not. Phoenix really does
