An atheist disagreement with Sam Harris: He makes an assumption that everything exists in in the present. That 150 stems cells is indeed just 150 stem cells end-of-story.
I would argue stem cells are not just cells but an expression of growth. It's like saying a computer is just a hunk of metal that creates heat. A very reductive way of thinking.

@CineVosh Well thats really just an opinion, to make sense of things in the physical world you can't use X as an unknown variable and make sense of things scientifically. 150=150x if x=0, that's it. To say that it will reach more than that just by pure assumption. An embyro-stem cell is 150 cells, by definition. If it grows beyond that by much the category changes and you can no longer call it a stem cell. Either way, you idea is not grounds for a moral argument.
The religious response is that the embryo has been ensouled. Funny that they have no problem with arms research, inluding bio-warfare. That is you can kill as many men, women and children and babies as you want so long as you don't abort embryos. Typical of the insanity of religion.

The reason that Dawkins, Harris and company et al are ignorant about religion is because they are trained to evaluate the evidence for any claims. Religion makes no claims that can be backed rationally or empirically, and is internally inconsistent. In their minds, because of these deficits, it simply ceases to be a subject of interest at all. I agree with Sam Harris on his positions on abortion and stem cell research but I do not like his justification for them.
I'm pro-choice because I disagree with the notion that unborns have a positive right to live, or in other words the ability to coerce people in order to maintain their existence. I don't accept the notion that abortion is murder, since it is not an infringement upon negative rights.
My only dissappointment (more-so from Dawkins/Harris) is that they don't seem to explore the reasoning behind religious belief beyond the criticism and disprovable nature of it. I myself think religion can be very harmful on a large scale, but scientifically is worthy of exploring our formulation of thought as a species. Yes, it is a shame that the only way to have a decent, honest, discussion of it seems to be with the un-'faithful' who don't automatically trump the arguments presented.
I think they do explore the reasoning behind religious belief. In fact they do it a lot. They have to. Otherwise they would just be showing bias and hatred toward something, as opposed to explaining why it is not a very reasonable mindset. Just read Dawkins' "The God Delusion" or Dennett's "Breaking the Spell" and you'll find many detailed explanations of why people believe in weird things... which also reminds me of Shermer's "Why People Believe in Weird Things" :)

An atheist disagreement with Sam Harris: He makes an assumption that everything exists in in the present. That 150 stems cells is indeed just 150 stem cells end-of-story.
I would argue stem cells are not just cells but an expression of growth. It's like saying a computer is just a hunk of metal that creates heat. A very reductive way of thinking.
Sam sees the number 150. I see the truncation of an exponential formula eg. 150^x
To say 150 is the same as 150^x is ignorant and not compelling.

@CineVosh Well thats really just an opinion, to make sense of things in the physical world you can't use X as an unknown variable and make sense of things scientifically. 150=150x if x=0, that's it. To say that it will reach more than that just by pure assumption. An embyro-stem cell is 150 cells, by definition. If it grows beyond that by much the category changes and you can no longer call it a stem cell. Either way, you idea is not grounds for a moral argument.

@JonahTorn Religious COs are the exception rather than the rule. Religion, imo, doesn't make the people who believe it insane, but the idea of religion is not one of humanity's sanest notions. The idea that there's a man living in the sky who runs things for convenience of human beings is not well thought out.
There are many good religious people. One of my favourite poems is e.e. cummings's "i sing of olaf, glad and big". I recognise that individuals are not defined solely by their beliefs.

A lot of religion is accused of doing when a religous leader pushes for violence it's name is actually co-opting beliefs to push aside thinking that causes people to feel guilty.Religious CO's, exceptions or not, have also been noted as very conservative students of their religion.Not using the weapons of this world ever is a fundamental approach at least in Christianity.

Having used Christianity as an allusion to basics or fundamentals of a belief system & war as example of what they can not participate in, lets look at science & better thinking as it is connected to belief. What difference does reason make for any given belief at any given time? There are conditions where people stop believing reasonable beliefs despite what they see, & that with an intact ability to reason why their conclusions are false. The reason that Dawkins, Harris and company et al are ignorant about religion is because they are trained to evaluate the evidence for any claims. Religion makes no claims that can be backed rationally or empirically, and is internally inconsistent. In their minds, because of these deficits, it simply ceases to be a subject of interest at all. He doesn't have faith in such things. Where there's conclusive evidence, he believes it. Where there's suggestive evidence, he hypothesizes it. Where there is no evidence, he admits he doesn't know the answer. This is the at the core of reason and logic.

The chances of god existing are not 1 in 5. Gods have been as verified as unicorns, flying cows and the fact that Jesus just returned to earth and is, as I write this, in my livingroom. Figure out those odds and you'll be closer to the truth.
There being a punishment for not believing does'nt make gods existence more probable. There will still be no good evidence-based arguments that support belief.
If nothing else, I'm not going to be bullied into believing in something that makes no sense.

I'm not necceserily trying to make faith look stupid. I was making the point that Unicorns and Gods have roughly the same probability of existing because both have been equally verified. It's a very very very small probability. If you believe in the one, why not the other? Oh, I forgot; the torture thing.

1) some humans cheat.
2) there are errors in the bible showing that it is made by humans without word by word guidance by God.
3) therefore, it is possible that people who wrote the bible cheated.
4) that's the reason we cannot accept the argument 'prophesies came true, the bible says so'.

Then, on praying in need: I make a huge effort to avoid such situations. I see no reason to believe it helps to invoke a God, it seems more practical to take action.

The problem is more with dogma, than religion itself. Evangelical christianity in the US is starkly different from Switzerland, for example- the origin of Anglican, Presbyterian and Lutheran denominations- and yet CERN and ETHZurich blossom in their midst. 80% of Swiss voted for stem cell research...
Iran has some of the most liberal stem-cell laws in the world (even though they still hang people for being gay).
If someone believes the bible literally, there's no hope of reasoning with them.

I agree with Sam Harris on his positions on abortion and stem cell research but I do not like his justification for them.
I'm pro-choice because I disagree with the notion that unborns have a positive right to live, or in other words the ability to coerce people in order to maintain their existence. I don't accept the notion that abortion is murder, since it is not an infringement upon negative rights.

My only dissappointment (more-so from Dawkins/Harris) is that they don't seem to explore the reasoning behind religious belief beyond the criticism and disprovable nature of it. I myself think religion can be very harmful on a large scale, but scientifically is worthy of exploring our formulation of thought as a species. Yes, it is a shame that the only way to have a decent, honest, discussion of it seems to be with the un-'faithful' who don't automatically trump the arguments presented.

I think they do explore the reasoning behind religious belief. In fact they do it a lot. They have to. Otherwise they would just be showing bias and hatred toward something, as opposed to explaining why it is not a very reasonable mindset. Just read Dawkins' "The God Delusion" or Dennett's "Breaking the Spell" and you'll find many detailed explanations of why people believe in weird things... which also reminds me of Shermer's "Why People Believe in Weird Things" :)
