The atrocities carried out in 1971 in Bangladesh were the most heinous of the crimes. However, I do not agree that fundamentalists should not be given media time to speak. Freedom of speech is the basis of a democracy but, the law enforcing agencies should be powerful enough in order to justify if the speech has a potential to trigger violence. In this case Zaid is speaking to the Pakistani audiences hence the voices opposing his thoughts should be strong. It must come from within Pakistan.

The break-up of old Pakistan is also proof that a nation cannot be forged simply on the bases of religious similarity. (Israel is the only exception to this rule - for special reasons). As a Pakistani, I must say I am shocked at the ignorance and stupidity of Zaid Hamid. He is accusing India of aggression against East Pakistan via its military action? Has he forgotten that India started experiencing a major refugee problem on account of the growing turmoil in East Pakistan and so had to act to prevent being inundated with tens of millions of refugees? And that the popular uprising in East Pakistan was a consequence of exploitation of Bengalis by West Pakistan?
