Really excellent piece of research and presentation. I just returned from Europe and, passing through Amsterdam, saw DC-10s but no L1011s...too bad, it's a beautiful aircraft.
My favourite Jetliner and a damn good aircraft. Not sure though it was 'better' than a DC10 or a 747 thought. Indeed it had innovative systems but it also had quite a few drawbacks too. Thirsty due to it flying a little too pitched up and numerous minor gremlins of which used to ground them frequently. However, I would say that the Lockheed maintenance manual seemed stricter than average. It would often insist on 'grounding first, then fixing' rather than fix 'n fly.
So much love with L-1011 TWA black&white photo at 0.23. Do you have it softcopy. Can you send it to me. i want to complete my L-1011 photos collection.
I logged near 6000 hrs with the L1011 Star and I must confess it was a beautiful and easy bird to master. The only bitch is the location of major switches which would stretch your ass off the edge of the seat to reach.
up for AUCTION on E Bay are my 1970's Vintage Jet Airliner passenger seats - type in the search of E Bay the above words / phrase to locate them,,,, under Test Pilot10-4
I remember flying Eastern's L-1011 to west palm beach......also had a chance in 94 to fly to vegas on one. What a gorgeous aircraft! A shame they are but a memory now!
The L-1011 was superior to the Dc-10 and 747. The TriStar had 4 hydraulic systems, the Dc-10 only had 3. The TriStar had Direct Lift Control, neither the -10 or 747 did. Every 1011 autopilot was certified for autoland cat IIb, neither -10 o 747 had that as standard equipment. The 1011 had all flush mounted cockpit switches, the other two had regular toggle switches. The TriStar was a real pilot plane, easy to fly. I know because I worked for Lockheed in the 70's in pilot training and flew it fo
Hawaiian Airlines leased about 32 L-1011-500 TriStars in it's 80 year history. I also remember they also had 18 McDonnell Douglas DC-10-50s in which were leased from American Airlines and the L-1011-500s were leased from Delta Air Lines. I should know, I was there to see it all happen. I live on the island of Oahu. You don't ever see these classic airliners anymore unless you go to the Mojave Desert in Mojave, California. You will Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines fleet.
Thanks for making this! So evocative of (what must be!) a simpler, more energetic, interesting, and vital past. The music helps evoke those feelings too! The planes in Eastern, Pan-Am, and TWA livery @0:13 to 0:25 are congruent in my mind with "what an airplane is supposed to look like". :-)
king hussien of jordan favorite plane was L10 11 tristar,i wish if they would have up grade it just like DC10 which, became MD 11 and, thanks 4 posting!

So is the air intake for the engine on to of the fuselage on the nose or something?
128pinkfloyd 1 year ago
@128pinkfloyd Yes, the intake is the big hole on top of the fuselage. The engine sits below behind the end of the fuselage.

Those is most Best airline to use..
I can feel those pain and hear Lockheed l-1011 scream,"Save me, save me, save me save me, help me, help me."
I feel sorry for those being end up at grave yard.
Such beautiful enough to not get destroy.
