I quit playing hockey because of dirty cheapshots like that. A kid did something similar to me but he hit me in the chin with the butt of his stick. Didn't knock me out, just split my lip and chin open. Bled something fierce. I got up, skated up behind him and swung on his head like Tee Ball with my stick. It knocked his helmet off. Here's the problem. I rammed his face against the ice a few times for good measure. And just like that, I couldn't play hockey anymore.
It was a different time. Anybody who doesn't think that kind of hit used to be called a clean and legal play by pretty much everyone hasn't been watching hockey very long.
If Matt Cooke does that, the announcers would be calling for his head and he would also be blamed for the stretcher collapsing. He also would have been tossed, suspended, tarred, and feathered.

In the playoffs against the Devils, he full bore smashed Doug Gilmour right in the jaw with his fist, and no one caught it. Gilmour was out for the rest of the series, if I recall. It was vicious.

I've been playing hockey my whole life and clean hit or not, you stay clear of the head... I've had big hits myself but not to try and destroy the guy... just enough to get him off the puck or knock the wind out of him...back in 06/07 we played against the Oshawa Gens, and I had a huge open ice hit on a dude, he struggled to skate but no head shot... head shots are dirty no matter what

It's a clean hit. Now, with the new rule it isn't, but at the time it was. This hit has happened countless times in the NHL. Just look up "Matt Cooke knocks Marc Savard Out" or any Scott Stevens hit. Just because your shoulder hit a guys jaw doesn't mean it's breaking any rule. Sometimes shit happens.By rule, there was nothing wrong with this hit. Hence, no penalty.

Love Messier and a big Rangers fan, but having watched him for a number of years @ MSG, I have to say that he was guilty of some pretty lethal cheap shots. He was clean most of the time, but he wasn't averse to blasting someone when the ref wasn't watching. In the playoffs against the Devils, he full bore smashed Doug Gilmour right in the jaw with his fist, and no one caught it. Gilmour was out for the rest of the series, if I recall. It was vicious.

Not a great hit at all but Mess wasn't a cheap shot artist... Now, if this hit happened today:
a) would be a "head shot" under new NHL rule. Suspension for sure.
b) line brawl as every star would have jumped Messier.

I've been playing hockey my whole life and clean hit or not, you stay clear of the head... I've had big hits myself but not to try and destroy the guy... just enough to get him off the puck or knock the wind out of him...back in 06/07 we played against the Oshawa Gens, and I had a huge open ice hit on a dude, he struggled to skate but no head shot... head shots are dirty no matter what

Anyone who thinks that was "cheap" or "dirty" needs to stick to soccer or needlepoint. Modano had his head down looking for the puck and was responsible for Messier decking him. I miss big hits like that.

Clipping someone like that is a lot more dangerous, and about as clean as when someone sticks out their knee in the hopes it may shorten a career. This is pretty much what Matt Cooke has done to about a dozen guys.

Modano was incredibly "lucky" when cheap shot goon Messier took the head shot and as Modano went down with helmet already off and knocked out, his head did not take immediate full strike against the ice. The result would have been even worse than it already was.
Now that cocksucking coward Messier is on board with Cascade helmets promoting via their superior design increased head protection and the horror of concussions, brain injury and the like. Fuck him. What a fucking hypocrite goon.

dirty hit, yes, but not illegal by the rules of those days unless you think it's an elbow which I am not sure. But shoulder to head hits were perfectly legal back then even from the blindside. That hit would be a penalty with the new head shot rules today.

It's a clean hit. Now, with the new rule it isn't, but at the time it was. This hit has happened countless times in the NHL. Just look up "Matt Cooke knocks Marc Savard Out" or any Scott Stevens hit. Just because your shoulder hit a guys jaw doesn't mean it's breaking any rule. Sometimes shit happens.By rule, there was nothing wrong with this hit. Hence, no penalty.
