It`s time for Norfolk Southern to re-open the Peavine as an alternative route out of Portsmouth to Cincy and beyond for the Heartland Corridor. It`s a shorter route than going up to Columbus and back South to Cincy as they are doing now. It`s half the distance easily going over the Peavine. Come on NS, pull the trigger and re-open this line!
Really it's not a monster it's a beautiful thing!!!About the people that scurry away at 2:25 haha.My most favorite train, hard to think of never seeing another steamer go down the railway again, sad thought of a loss of American dream and pride.
@geodeuce not exactly. My understanding is the bridge that goes into Portsmouth would need to be replaced and it would be operational again. They run switchers out of Cincinnati towards Batavia and a few other places along the way still.
I am an aircraft mechanic & pilot with a love & passion for old radial & rotary engines, thus steam engines like this are easily a 12 on the *WOW* factor (on a scale of 1-10)!
What kills me is this...in 1980-81 (I think) this engine was painstakingly restored, costing perhaps millions. Now, 611 is DONE? Maybe it's been retired for a long time. It seems such a damn *waste* to park it so as to have to restore it again in 50-60-? years when someone with the $ & passion decides to do so.
@NSSteamVideos at least at 16 you got to see her run I was till in Highschool and never got that honor living in Texas I showed up to English class one day and me teacher took me aside with sad look she was holding a paper from her hometown Bluefield Wv that NS had killed the Program that screwed the rest of my day and hers up she grew up rideing 611 and seeing 1218 in service I never made it to either now all I see them stuffed and mounted in Roanoke what a waste of a good engine
I'm very familiar with the PeaVine from Portsmouth to Cincy... having worked in Portsmouth for the N&W for 23 yrs. I been down that line many times..
I also have some video's on here.. (search for: bennie 449) I at one time had a model train setup in my workshop. Thanks for posting this video..The passenger station is now gone and a lot of people I knew are gone also.
Very cool Joel. I was fourtanate enough to get a cab ride on 611 from Portsmouth back to Batavia that trip. Bob Saxton let me blow for the crossing at Clough Pike.
@tenthovi I know what you mean. I was a hang around at the Birmingham shops and I was there for the trips every spring and fall to Chattanooga and return when I was a teenager. The Steam guys (especially Bobby) really took my under their wing. I was actually left alone with the 611 in Chattanooga several times while the crew took a break. My moment was my 15th b'day... We had to move from the servicing area to reload passengers and Bobby let me take the throttle of 611.
As requested Joel, scenes in order are: Summit Road east of Batavia, Sardinia, unknown, Lawshe (where I met up with you, Greg Scholl on right shooting video), Arion (the most I ever saw 611 smoke it up), McDermott, Youngs (you can hear my Nikon FM2 motor drive), Rarden, Winchester, Williamsburg, Batavia off Rt 32 and you can see my arm on the left, Cincinnati Union Terminal and Brown, Ky. south of Lexington. Oh gosh, that's me talking at the end goofing around.

Hard to believe she's been back at the VMT for almost 17 years already....seems like only yesterday she was out there under steam.
