During my last year of college I discovered that one of my roommates came from a family that has a trash company. I asked them to help me look through the garbage at my school and we found TONS of clothes, household supplies, bedding, electronics still in usable condition, unopened toiletries, you name it. We took it out, cleaned it all up and gave it to a local charity who were so happy they were crying! I got a bonus from my education: don't be wasteful!
I'm a righteous dumpster diver dude. I get all of my apparel, From the bottom of a barrel. All my favorite music, Someone else refused it, My letterhead has many styles, Because it comes from the circular file. If it's in a bottle or a can, Then I figure that I can, Eat it all up, Without throwing up! I go to Campus every spring, To look for all of the good things, That people throw away, Because they go away.
Sometimes one makes a mess while going through the trash. However, I agree that it is important to clean the area up at least as good as it was if not better. I will often sweep a little afterwards.
100% of the time when I dumpster dive, I always find a microwave. usually take it apart for the transformer and magnetron. I even walked away with a Sat dish (good for directional communication. In a few months a building nearby me will be demolished, hopefully can walk away with a C-band dish an a substation transformer.
ugh- it seriously frightens the sh!t out of me that people can throw this stuff out. Just disgusting. I'm astounded the schools don't have some kind of recycling system- surely next years kids are buying the same books that were just thrown out.
I did this at SeattleU once. I got a 50-lb trashbag of unopened MRE's thrown out by some ROTC students (yummy!) who were too nit picky to eat them. Also nosed into what kind of grades a few people I knew got on their disposed term papers :D

Looks like these guys mare creating a huge mess rummaging. Divers should always leave the trash cleaner than they found it.
I hope they cleaned up after themselves after picking through it.
