@klarinetta Coffee has more opinions than you can shake a stick at! As with our entire approach to it, make it how you like it, end of story. If you want to call that lazy, go right ahead - we don't care :) - Kat
The single best thing you can do to improve the quality of your videos would be to buy a wireless mic and put it on the person who is in FRONT of the camera so we can hear them instead of the shooter. Wireless mics are not expensive. A mic on the person of interest is way more improtant than the on-cmaer mic picking up the shooter. Please.
Im not going to be a snarky coffee nerd here, but this video really doesn't inform anyone about anything. I get you guys are not trying to be scientific, but I guaranty people that are totally ignorant about coffee watch this and think to themselves "wow machine X makes awesome ristretto shots, while machine Y suck". Which is totally not the case.
What this video does show, is if randomly pull a shot on five or six machines, there will be one shot that's better than the others.
@dddtttddd360 We were experimenting here and we had people ask us to pull ristrettos off of different machines to see how they compared. We are NEVER scientific and if you don't enjoy our practical, fun and accessible approach to coffee, that your choice, but it doesn't make this video any less interesting, informative or educational to other viewers. - Kat
Great video! The better way for making a ristretto is to adjust the grind such that the shot still takes 24-28 seconds, with weight of the shot around .75 oz and weight of the shot around the same weight of the griund beans used in the shot. I think cutting the shot short around 19 sec does not give the same rich taste. Again, great comparison anyways.
Kat, you do a great job asking all the right questions. Just as I was wondering what a "ristretto" was, there you were asking it. And Gail explains it all. Awesome duo. Keep it up! Kat ever get a cameo?
@shrumpkin Thank you! I try to do that -- sometimes successful, sometimes not, so I am always happy to have these comments to answer anything I didn't catch in my interview :) I'm only on video if/when reflected in stainless steel espresso machines ;) - Kat
As always, great vid from Kat and Gail. I was wondering if you guys have considered doing a review on the Bezzera Magica, given you've done a review for almost every machine in the world...lol Also, its my understanding Bezzera is the pioneer in the busi! Obviously you guys cant review every machine, but it would seem this machine given its price point and features...etc etc you would have that vid in the archives....plus i own one..lol thats why actually...! your thoughts would be appreciated.
@fattored We looked into carrying it and couldn't - didn't meet our specs around fulfillment and pricing, etc. So, sadly, we won't have any review or feedback for you :( - Kat
Pink shirts rule! We used to do PSF at med school (Pink Shirt Fridays) - only a true man can pull of a pink shirt!
I think Kat seemed to have had alot of coffee prior to the ristretto testing!
Another great video guys - i've been somewhat accidentally doing ristrettos alot recently whilst dialing in some new beans, though i'm not sure almost choking the machine is the best way to do a ristretto. I'm glad you decided to do the Silvia
Love your vids! Can you guys please please please add the Breville BES900XL to that comparison test where you made 4 lattes in a row? I would love to find out how fast, or slow, that machine is.
I thought double 2oz espresso shot was ideal in 20-30 sec then Ristretto was 1.5oz also in 20-30sec with just finer ground coffee.

@klarinetta I think you can play around with it based on your own taste preferences - Kat

@SeattleCoffeeGear I read at CoffeeGeek that cutting it short like this is the lazy method.

You should definitely include a Saeco with a non-pressurized PF/basket in these tests

Wow, how did you run the pump from the PID on the Silvia? And did I hear it do a quick pre-infusion? Which PID do y'all got yerself there?
barnz008 4 months ago
@barnz008 The PID is Auber with pre-infusion involved. You keep your coffee switch on at all times and it kicks the pump on and off itself. - Kat
SeattleCoffeeGear 4 months ago
@barnz008 I have the Auber PID with pre infusion on my Silvia it also has steam control. It is a great addition to the Silvia.
