The Barrage feature. Just before it on the four symbols at the bottom-left, it was the one at the bottom. Once you've built up enough thingy to get to that point then you can let rip on the baddies.

I kept forgetting to do stuff like this in earlier levels which is why it seemed to take forever to get round them :)
