Gods bless Star Trek. It brought my family together for the past 10 years. I hope that they bring out another Trek on TV soon. Nothing like battle star galatica/ or Caprica though. anyone else agree?
I am 15, two years ago I was watching every star trek series because of the movie, I watched DS9 with low expectation, at the end of the series I felt every character was my family
"An interesting note: until about 25 minutes into the episode, Sisko absolutely hated this period in time, and he thought Vic's program was stupid. It begs the question: How the hell does Sisko know the words?!"
To paraphrase "Me thinks he doth protest too much" which in the show, he does, he goes on about all the problems of 60's vegas, he seems to know alot about a time period 400+ years in the past.
@gbob452 Yeah, Ben Sisko's particularly up on his Black History and songs of this style are very much part of his heritage - he's often singing swing songs, including joining in when Odo starts humming "They Can't Take That Away From Me" earlier in the series (or is it series 6?). He doesn't so much hate the period as he hates what establishments (like the bars in 60s Vegas and all over America) meant to black people - the fact that they could be entertainers or workers there but not customers.
@dastaylor Avery Brooks is a very accomplished jazz singer, but stylistically Darren is much closer to the most famous recording of this, by ol' blue eyes.

@tarhonyapure - I feel exactly the same way. I think the reason I feel that way, is that it was a progressive story, and all the characters were paired up with personal relationships/stories. And they wrapped up the series perfectly (I thought). This series didn't seem to do too well with the critics, but I thought it was the best out of all of them. And Avery Brooks got some pipes on him! I wish SyFy or Spike would put the series back on. I don't think there was one episode I didn't like.

Back when I was a kid my memory was utterly terrible...yet somehow I always remembered Vic Fontaine in DS9. Despite being a bit-part in the whole thing he was one of the best characters :)
Technically he did represent a more "real" use of a tech like the holodeck. Since they could not put in the first thing we'd do (aka create a sex goddess and shut the door forever) they put in the second best: creator your personal little dreamscape to relax and chill in.
Bashir created classy a nightclub with his favorite singer.

1:59 is priceless. Shows Bashir's and O'Brien's friendship at its best. It's amazing how that relationship develops through the show. I, personally, love them.
Until recently I'd only ever seen a random episode here and there of DS9, and apart from Voyager, didnt really call myself a Star Trek fan as such (although didnt dislike it either). Recently however I borrowed seasons 2-7 of DS9 from a friend and Im pleasantly just what a good show it is. Anyway, as the for this clip, I love it, for my tastes one of the best Star Trek moment ever (regardless of series), from one of my favorite epsides :)
Brooks is always amazing... Darren sounds like a perfectly computerized combination of Sinatra and Bennett. The second-best episode of the best ST series of all.
@MrShark2011 Close: James Darren has an album called "This One from the Heart". You should be able to find it on Youtube; it contains covers of his songs from the show and additional pieces in the same style.

I think that's an oversimplification. Racism between humans isn't an issue in The Federation, but all the things that happened to the black communities of the world still happened. Sisko just saw it as disrespectful of what his ancestors went through to have a LARP that doesn't reflect what things were like in those times.

@potophan2006 Brooks also sings a few bars of "Everything I have is yours" in "Far Beyond The Stars", and plays some beautiful jazz piano in "Image In The Sand"

@potophan2006 Avery Brooks has quite the singing credentials; "A deep baritone singer, Brooks has performed on stage with Butch Morris, Lester Bowie, and Jon Hendricks. He also recorded an album with saxophone player James Spaulding as a tribute to Duke Ellington. Brooks had the lead role in the 1985 Anthony Davis opera X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X. Also, he performed at the Paris Banlieues Bleues Festival in 2005." (Wikipedia)

one question how did sisko learn this song when the other day he hated this era??????????
nnoose 2 years ago
The only reason Sisko hated this era was because of the inequality of african americans.
blue6358 2 years ago
I never got that. I mean, in Star Trek, race among humans is a dead concept.
Why would Sisko care?
Darroth 2 years ago 3
I thought that was obvious that Sisko cares.
Krowzak 2 years ago
That's my point. There isn't any race concept among humans in Star Trek. Sisko wouldn't identify with Blacks from the past.
Darroth 2 years ago
I think that's an oversimplification. Racism between humans isn't an issue in The Federation, but all the things that happened to the black communities of the world still happened. Sisko just saw it as disrespectful of what his ancestors went through to have a LARP that doesn't reflect what things were like in those times.

his experience as gabriel bell may well have had an influence, also his experience as "brother benny"

He didn't hate this era, he just hated this program bcs of inequality of african americans in it...
That doesn't mean he didn't know any Frank Sinatra songs, he was quite familiar with that era in every aspect...

Looked up some of his other songs, Good stuff.

I'm not sure if this has been addressed but perhaps Sisko knows the words to this song. He doesn't have to visit the program to know the words.

A Frank Sinatra clone, Captain Sisko, and one of the best songs ever written.
God Bless the Federation. :)
