It is actually too late to argue for independence. But they (the CCP) could let the people continue their own way of life and not be so strict on them. Yes, Han destroyed their own culture back in the 1960's and early 70's but they also went to places with a different culture, such as Tibet, and tried to destroy those cultures as well, all Mao's plan. I would think it would be hard for those people to forget that. The Han still hate the Japanese. I'll bet the Tibetans have a good memory too.
