Fink's work has enormous implications for all Americans who may be affected by future disasters. The failures of emergency preparedness revealed by Fink led to shocking and needless deaths. Major changes in medical disaster preparedness policies are needed to prevent future horors. Public discussion and input are essential. But, so far, the medical community seems primarily interested in immunizing themselves from accountabliity.
Fink's article in the New York Times Magazine troubles me on a number of levels. For one, she lionizes the doctor who gave up and left the hospital. Then she targets the doctor who stayed, scrutinizing every decision as if it were made in the deliberative manner of everyday life. This was a desperate, harrowing time! She eviscerates individuals with the clarity of hindsight, never addressing the systemic flaws that prompted their actions. This is cynical journalism of the worst order.
BS...all the way down to these shills with the closeups for affect. There is no excuse for what was done...and the amount covered-up.

Controversial decision? WTF? Euthanasia is against the law.

Euthanasia is illegal in New Orleans. No state or federal law in affect during
emergencies give doctors the ability to euthanize people.
