If I recall, "Indian Reservation" was "shopped" around to different publishing houses, record labels and networks. A few groups and solo artists recorded demos of this tune. I remember that Glen Campbell, Joe South, Tommy Roe all had turned down this song.
I believe a New York advertising agency pitched "Indian Reservation" to several States as an "ad campaign" idea..... ? ?
J.D. Loudermilk, penned this tune. This was his last big songwriting success, "Indian Reservation," which topped the charts for Paul Revere & the Raiders in 1971 (it had previously been a hit for British singer Don Fardon). Loudermilk wrote many hits for other artists, "Tobacco Road" Nashville Teens, "Waterloo" (Stonewall Jackson), "Angela Jones" (Johnny Ferguson), "Ebony Eyes" (the Everly Brothers), "Norman" (Sue Thompson), and "Abilene" (George Hamilton IV).
I'm reading comments and disagreeing. The Raiders version was a real improvement but to call this "horrible" or equate it to "rap" does not hold water. I think most people grow up listening to their favorite version and a different version comes along and it gets blasted. I was struck by the starkness of this and "I'll be a red man 'till I die" is sung with enough emotion for me. Even though I still like The Raider's better, I can still like this as well. Just food for thought.
Hey, Skinny, why not upload the whole suite so people can know how good this album really is? Paul Revere and the Raiders may have made this one song famous, but to hear the whole epic as done by L&CE is to hear the Truth.
A classic, and also a precursor to the 1968 hit single by Don Fardon. But somewhere a live clip of Lewis and Clarke's I Feel Good exists and it would be more than wonderful if it ever showed up on YouTube!
wow! This is the original version with Cherokee lyrics in the chorus. I've never heard it before but grew up with the Raiders version. Interesting & they are both good songs. Raiders copied them & added some cool stuff but took away the Cherokee lyrics for white man consumption...
OMG!!! Im so glad this song is on here! My mom told me about this song like 20 years ago but I never actually got to hear it until today! thank you thank you thank you!!!
Don Fardon did this also

OK, so maybe the Raiders had a better "pop" record but this one has "soul" even if it is a bit rough around the edges.

Wow, if Paul Revere and the Raiders had not done this song the world would have been stuck with this version.
