no. how it works is you go inside of you portal and then it generates a portal on a random spot where there is a solid block under it. it goes trough all that using some variables (i, j, k) not at an euqal coordinate to the first one. an also it doesn't get moved up. cause the game just puts it on a random spot with a solid under it.

well the portals [on the regular world] are so close that the portal [choosing randomly] chooses one of the portals and never uses the other. That's how this works nao anyways... besides if you teleported up onto the air-portal-thingy, the portal would've shifted to the ground, where the other portal is. So it'd just overwrite the other portal xD

i had a weird situation with the nether portal.i was sick of walking all the way through a 5 min walk to my nether portal so i put it in my house and when i left the nether i ended up in my mineshaft so i destroyed the portal in the mineshaft.hoping to be able to come back to my house from the nether world i spawned in a mysterious cave where i foud a ton of diamond/gold.when i was digging around in my regular mineshaft i found the weird cave

Yes, you can farm obsidian with portals, but I think that the two portals are clearly connected to each other so that a new one will only be generated when a portal gets destroyed.

he isnt completely wrong. the first part is true. a portal will be spawned directly below you (or at the same coordinates) and it will teleport to another spot wich isnt stuck in netherrack. but the part that if u go back while scared by a ghast isnt right anymore. thats fixed. i only hope mojang can fix the problem with portals in lava and portals floating above a lava ocean...

1 time i built a house on a hill and made a portal in it and u know those really huge oceans of lava in the bottom of the nether? well my portal spawned about 6 blocks away from bedrock at the bottom of the nether directly under the center of the biggest lava ocean ive ever seen.

so id dig up and hit lava so id close the hole move to the side try again and hit lava. i was at it for days befor i got out of the lava and the view of the ocean of lava was pretty cool when i got on top of it
