I'm 27, but I first got into Charles Lloyd via the Mosaic Records homepage (they reissued his 'Of Course,Of Course' LP from Columbia not too long ago). Then once I caught wind of his later period ECM recordings (begininng with 1997's 'Canto') I realized he may be one of the truly great reedmen of our time. Very spiritual, but always on point. Plays with a sure purpose, but is never too busy to draw out the inner beauty of whatever he's playing. I really dig that of him...
I wholeheartedly agree, and though you took more words to say it, what I think you are saying is that he plays with soul and feeling. That's what separates the men from the boys in any from of artistic expression. There are far too many sax players today who have studied Coltrane and Brecker and can play a lot of notes very fast, but they don't seem to have anything to say. Lloyd has "something to say."
If you listen to this track - the bass line is being provided by the piano and as amazing as it is this is hardly jazz. world music with freeform jazz improvisation might sum it up better. I could have asked Charles himself to better describe it when I saw him last sunday at the club I work for. He was absolutely amazing...
Shoot, I just recently picked up this album and I always wondered where that damn bass was coming from when I heard this track in particular-lol!!! Had NO idea it was coming from the piano, awesome...
love this kind of jazz without the stand up bass, is this called any certain kind of jazz? I am always looking for jazz with NO stand up bass. the cd shown at the end of this clip, thats from this show? if so NO stand up bass at all for the show?
the cd is from this show. No bass at all. Check out Paul Motian TRio (no bass), their last recordings are "i have the room above her" and others on ecm also. Beautiful music.
thanks uvawitz for all. i saw/heard charles two years ago in barcelona. i got on board with the blue note tone poem, now this is a new level, awesome awesome
all the brothers come together play music from their hearts. I wish world will be like this some day.

I got my tickets for the concert they're doing at Carnegie Hall at the end of this month. Naturally, I'm pretty psyched.
