TOTP, etc. forced their acts to lipsync due to the sound of the studio, etc. I was protocol of these shows.

TOTP did not force people to mime. They could sing live if they wished, but due to the time constraints and the lack of rehearsal time a lot chose to mime. I know this for fact as my friend was the boss of TOTP.
