would i have any issues taking pictures of concerts with a nikon D40? I wanted to ask cause you said that you captured this photo at ISO 8,000. I can crank my ISO up to 3200. Is that an issue?
@ibleedredwhitendblue hes at 8,000 ISO cuz he gotta compensate for the low light AND the shutter speed hes using... u can go 3200 ISO and a 1/200 shutter and it would be almost the same as this image... depends on the movements of the subject... the more faste the person is moving the faster the shutter speed so the more ISO to compensate... if u have a low Fstop lense like at 2.5 or less... u would not have any problem with a 3,200 ISO
Thanks for sharing! I have been shooting Christian Concerts for 3 years, and I use many of the same techniques you show wonderfuly in your video! Check out my work -- I have shot over 100 bands… DavidKellyPhoto
Robert Knight docu is Rock Prophecies available in streaming Netflix. Awesome guy. You have taught me nothing rather validate what I do through your experience.Your all over it Jarid.
Heck of a shot. The original is spot on. You got the neck of the guitar, the amber light between the two band members, great tattoo coloring, a colorful face of the guitar and shiny light racks. The black and white takes away all these things and shows them in a totally different world of bright black and bright white. Hope you get a ton for both versions!
absolutely super image jared! really love it! i was wondering how you focused on it.. i think you mentioned you use continuous focus, is that with center point? or did you select another point?
God, I'm so itching to upgrade my d5000... it blew my mind when you said you were shooting this at ISO 8000 at f3.2. I was shooting a friend's band some weeks ago and was using my 35mm 1.8 and had it wide open, the noise and loss of sharpness was frustrating.
@MI6CORPORAL I can only imagine what a D4 would be able to do. I've never shot a D3 and man would I love to just be able to borrow one. But how would you be able to go back to entry level DSLR after that? :( The D7000 is pretty nice... but if I'm upgrading I'm going FX, the D700 perhaps...
@MimiWildflower perhaps, I have a D5000 as well, its frustrating the 6400 ISO at its highest, don't get me wrong, I love that camera, its a great "little" camera, but it just doesn't quite cut it you know? I would love to go for a D700
Jared have you ever heard of Dave Hill? Or the Dragan Technique? I really want to see you try it. I want to see if you can make it look good. Think of it as a challenge =]
I think you can still use Aperture mode with this technique:
1. Set Metering mode to meter at focus point not Center or Matrix.
2. Set AE/AL to lock only Exposure not focus.
3. Focus on any spot where you think the exposure is what you want.
4. Hold AE/AL to lock the exposure.
5. Refocus now where you want to snap the picture. (Keep holding AE/AL will force the camera not to recalculate the shutter speed when the camera sees the flare)
Hey Jared, great video once again. Just wondering what photo editing software for PC you recommend? On a consumer basis by the way, not professional. Thanks in advance.
My problem with shooting in manual is that sometimes it takes too long to adjust the settings. Like when I'm shooting outside and take a pic, then turn around, see something great, take a new pic and then realize that the exposure is off.
There's not always enough time to adjust the shutter speed, ISO etc and capture a specific moment. How much time do you need to adjust the settings? Or are you at a level where you don't even have to think about it and just do it..kinda like driving a car?
hi jared. next week i get a chance of a life time to shoot a band in an extreme music fest. i followed ur tips in the previous vid..i called the band's manager..told him what i want to shoot, i spoke to the vocalist..and they agreed. they sent me the backstage pass few days ago.. and i'll get myself a nikon d90 tommorow..like u said, buy the body only and choose the lense later..i'll do that. any suggestion? i will shoot the post show party too..

@Leprechaun79 I have a 7D but I'm guessing it's almost the same procedure. Press 'Menu' button, and it's usually the first option on the first tab of the menu, something like "image Quality' and inside there it should say something like Jpeg S, M & L, RAW, RAW + Jpeg. The 60D also probably has the SRAW and MRAW file type. That means that it's shooting RAW (uncompressed) but at a lower resolution.
It's perfectly fine to ask a lot of questions when you're starting, but check the manual first ;-)

Jared, I am going to shoot a concert soon. I use a D300 with my 17-55 2.8.
I'm looking for some advice. Shuld I shoot alot in manual focus? How high can I go with the iso? Shuld I use a hood for my lens? Shuld I try my SB700 or don't even bother? Any general tips?
@JaredPolin exactly! sure it's nice to get great images straight from the camera, but the "straight from the camera" purists need to realize that people have been altering their images for as long as photography has existed!
hey, i have a question, do u know any software for mac that allows me to preview my photos on a laptop while taking them (for nikon cameras)??
i do a bit of portrait and wanted to find out if there is something like this. it would be much better to see what i could improve while on a "session"
this showed us that anyone without probably a d700+ cannot enter concert photography lol! 8000 iso, i wonder what I would have done with my d5000... probably walk away and go home haha
@Mgiu5 not true, as i showed in a video a long while ago at another show i used a d3000 the whole time and got great stuff. Look up one of my videos the band was automatic fire at the TLA.
Jared that picture is EPIC!!! The composition its just perfect well done. Btw can you giveaway some D3s's (just kidding). That camera its just awesome, makes iso 8000 look like 800. I hope that the new 5D/1Ds will perform as good.
This video made me basically want to switch from Canon to Nikon now and purchase a d3s. But the problem is cant afford to switch right now and buy a d3s but someday lol
Great great image. I was skeptical at first because the color image is already great, but the B&W is awesome. I probably would have scaled back the blacks to bring even more detail to the guitar (especially since it could be used as promo material for the guitar), but we all know you like to boom up the contrast :)

one of your best shots ever, must be said! oh and am i the only one who's noticed the MASSIVE similarity between this photo and ones Annie Leibovitz did of the Rolling Stones??
Being on manual what are your settings on your Nikon? Metering and Focusing, what about C,S or M out front?
Thanks
