I have played Q2 and Quake Live. But not Quake 3. Interesting review - Cool that it actually has gore, unlike QL. Personally, I thought Q3/QL was a lot more fun than Q2, because Q3's AI was challenging! Yes, I know it is a arena shooter. But I find it a lot more enjoyable than Q2 for some reason. Maybe because Q3 offers unique enviroments and the AI actually runs 100mph like you do, unlike in Q2 where the AI runs 3mph and you run 100mph, which isn't fair, therefore not challenging. :/
Never really liked Q3 because for me it was a letdown in a few key areas that I loved in the other 2 Quakes, but it served a great purpose and is a timeless gem in some regards.
I've never heard it called strafe jumping when I played Quake III back in the day, it was always called bunny hopping, some hosts would boot you for doing it too.
Believe me QuakeLive is a awesome port of Q3 which you can play for free (with some ads), but if you pay for premium/pro - you get a lot. Anyway that's one of main foundation games of FPS era in PC.
Lastly, I remember all the cool advertisements in magazines and the like, where a string of bathroom stalls had laptop power and LAN cables coming out from underneath from beneath them with graffiti such as "Yo momma camps out" adorning the stall walls. That was back when being "1337" was REAL and meant something. These days '1337' is more bought than anything.
Quake III arena, for as much as I didn't like it, it changed everything. Still, I kicked everyone's butts in the LAN parties at school.
The graphics between the two games were so different I recorded the segment on VHS. Unfortunately my sister recorded over it or threw it away, but I did find it a few years ago and got a good laugh seeing how laughable PS1's graphics were, and always had been as compared to the graphics of the computer
.
Also, Adam's shirt was STILL so ugly my penis fell off and roll out door.
I remember on Gamespot TV (which became Extended Play and later X-Play) back-in-the-day they ran a segment with John Carmack speaking about Quake 3 which had just been released, and how he would always get sniped with the rail gun in Quake 2 DIRECTLY AFTER a preview on "Tomorrow Never Dies," a game made for PS1.
I never got into Quake III, preferring Unreal Tournament. I just didn't like the gameplay, health degrading the hit noises and the fact that jump pads ALWAYS make you lose health on the regular maps of Q2A. I also was very disappointed that Quake 3 did not have a single player campaign. I wanted to blast Strogg into pieces over shooting outlandish character models using sub-par weapons.
This is just a suggestion, but I think it would be good if you included some of the games John Romero made after he left ID, since he did have a few games in the works and it's an important part of the ID history.
This Engine is Legendary as other developer are starting to use this to create their own game especially the so-called King of FPS COD (Call of Duty), the underrated Medal of Honor, Star Trek, James Bond and Many More. Also, It is where the developer go separate ways for founding their company which is now to be the successful video game industrial today.
Quake 3: Arena was a cool game (and id Tech 3 did bring about a lot of cool franchises like Call of Duty and American McGee's Alice) but it was the end of id Software being the frontrunner of game engine innovation.
Id Tech 4 and 5 just lack the same trailblazing games that made previous Id Techs such a success. (Let's face it, Doom 3 and RAGE just come off as shallow derivatives playing catchup with other developers' innovations)
As for the next episode, time to play the Mod Squad theme...
Unfortunately, ID won't release their engine (Id Tech 5) SDK and Source Code after Bethesda Softworks the Publisher of Fallout and Elder Scrolls have purchase their company.
Is this the last part of Exploring the Id then? You said final game review... I hope not, because this series is awesome. There's plenty more to explore!
