Like everyone is saying, I love this Beatrice and Benedick! I think kenneth Branaugh as Benedick is just a bit too goofy, while this one seems more smart and sexy...
I think poor Hero just seems insufficient in the shadow of Beatrice's written part. More than that, Beatrice is the one who Shakespeare gave the most character to in this play. Hero is more of a stock character and a mere foil for Beatrice. As is Claudio to Benedick. As characters they are rather one dimentional. Anyone who could steal the scene in these roles would be talented indeed!
I cannot tell how much I love the railing of Beatrice against the male sex:
"Not till God make men of some other metal than earth. Would it not grieve a woman to be overmastered with a pierce of valiant dust? to make an account of her life to a clod of wayward marl? No, uncle, I'll none: Adam's sons are my brethren; and, truly, I hold it a sin to match in my kindred."
I love the lady who played beatrice, and the guy who played benedict is, likewise, great, as is leonato, and the prince. However, the rest of the cast is sorely lacking. Yet I still love this version, if only because of beatrice and benedict.
This is probably the best interpretation I have seen of Beatrice, and many actresses feel they don't speak her lines quickly enough! Robert Lindsay also plays Benedick well, the match is great ,I find Brannagh and his wife much harder to believe.
My school is performing this in two weeks, I'm playing Beatrice. This actress talks way too fast, that's not going to fly, but her acting is fantastic!
I'm loving this! I find nothing wrong with it. It's just a different approach. Branaugh makes it more of a silly rollicking comedy, which I do like, a lot. This version is more of the classic British, dry wit, which I like, too.
hmm, i don't know if i like this beatrice or not. she makes this scene much more spiteful and proper than comedic the comedic railery that Branagh makes it to be. The way her father and uncle are shown seem more like they're laughing at her making it seem less like the battle of wits and more like she's the fool. I definitely prefer Reynolds as claudio though, Branagh's version has a claudio who's such a crybaby.

Watch the Kenneth Branagh version. Keanau Reeves plays the role

But Keanu is terrible in that role!

I agree

it really depends on how you look at keanu reeves.
Don John the BASTARD is written by Shakespeare is supposed to be a two dimensional evil villain.
this play is a comedy, so the villains are very two dimensional.
the most you can do is to be EVIL. like keanu reeves.
i think he did a good job

Beatrice is beautiful and just how i imagine the character to be, Benedick isn't good enough for her... and Claudio, he just looks silly

I feel like all of the joy has been sucked out of this! Most of the BBC productions I've seen are very very dry. It's pretty disappointing.

Wow Cherie Lunghi does a great job... I didn't expect that, she's just about on par with Emma Thompson!
Thanks for uploading this :)

I agree. As cute as Branaugh's Claudio is, he is a wimp. I like this one a little better and he's hot, too.

Cherie Lunghi is so amazing as beatrice.

the woman with the green dress looks a spitting image of sandra cretu from enigma in her younger days during the 80s.
