I did some more digging. It really looks like you really have to expect to unload a bit over $10K to get something decent. B. Searcy & Co. of CA and the German Merkel are mentioned. The whole matter is the specialized beefy features of the double and the amazingly painstaking and complex process of "regulation" when the maker solders the two barrels together to shoot to the same point of impact. The point being that absolute reliability is essential.

The Sabatti only goes up to 45-70. That does not qualify.  It should be a real British Nitro caliber. I've got a sneaking suspicion that these things are only slightly modified shotgun actions. That's why they can't handle the big bores.

That's exactly what I think, & no I'm not a tree hugging hippy or PETA member. You should only ever hunt for food. What the hell is the point of running up to an elephant & shooting it in the head?
