Pine had masterful moments as Kirk. The new backstory isn't really fair to Gene Roddenberry, and wouldn't have worked in a smaller-scale production. Simon Pegg could be a brilliant Scotty, but it seems the character will only be played for laughs. Quinto's tense Spock was compelling but un-Nimoyesque. Zoe Saldana is too tough and sassy to play the ethereally elegant Uhura.
