No-one ever went to see a movie where everyone was happy and nothing went wrong and I doubt they ever will. The more interesting thing is that it's Warner Bros and Bryan Singer, taking the web seriously as a media channel, and putting what looks like a chunk of money into this. If this series is a big enough success it could be a watershed moment for web-based entertainment. The quality bar just got raised pretty high - no more cat videos!
meh its like bryan singer was listening to the song "Science" SOAD and thought hmm i could make a movie about this. its quite apparent with the line "science has failed our world" in the trailer which a direct lyric from the song.
Technology is humanity's best asset. Science and technology drive the future. Look up the life expectancy of people in the pre-industrial age and then you'll see how much we owe to science and technology. fuck fear
Anyone who is positive that technology will kill us all can feel free to go back to picking berries and hunting animals with spears.
Wait, spears are technology.
There is a lot of "this far and no farther" thinking in this worlrd. I think it's natural to have a fear of the future, because it is the unknown, but we can't let that fear paralyze us.
@buraianto I get what you're saying and normally I would agree with it, but this is fiction and is meant to entertain not provide some deeply insightful critique of our modern world. Unless there ends of being some blatant campaign to 'rid the world of technology' in the movie, which I did not see in the trailer, I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill. This is just another typical dystopian future sci-fi that happens to have been in vogue in hollywood for the last couple of years.
@hippiessmell Maybe I am making too much out of it. Still, the "Science has failed us" line was kind of strong. Also, being fiction doesn't make something benign. This movie will influence people's attitudes toward science, technology and the future. People who have positive ideas and feelings toward these, or more faithful and hopeful attitudes, will be more likely to actually work toward a positive future.
@Raycheetah you may be overstating it. But yes some companies value Profits over a lot of things.
Meanwhile, I'm with @RincewinsHat66 Too much "Science has failed us." (Damn do I hate that line, Yes One computer virus and ALL OF SCIENCE has failed the WORLD.)
Well that looks like the usual run of the mill cliches - of course they target demographic has probably seen nothing and think its new and exiting. But where was this showing again?
SCIENCE IS EVIL! FEAR CHANGE! TECHNOLOGY WILL DOOM US ALL! Man, I'm really getting tired of all this sci-fi doom-saying. Doesn't anyone remember Star Trek and the idea of a hopeful future based on technological advancement? If everyone thinks we should go back to eating raw meat and living in mud houses, they can do that. I'll take the future of robots, nanomachines, genetics-based cures for all diseases, and intergalactic travel, thank you very much.
@Ost666 Movies and public opinion are very closely linked. And my country is currently in the midst of a resurgence of dogmatic and fundamentalist Christianity which is negatively effecting everything. They're teaching Intelligent Design in schools, for fucks sake! This movie isn't particularly bad, but I see it as a part of a broader anti-science trend in the US.
@caseyrwilson There are two main aspects of all science fiction: the infinite possibility of human endeavor and the dangers associated with that advancement. I feel like Hollywood has been leaning a bit hard on the latter, of late. I brought up Star Trek because it's not only a pillar of scifi, it focuses on the positive aspects of scientific advancement. You need both, but I'm just tired of the 24/7 doom-saying.
@RincewindsHat66 Gotta remember that we have to be able to trust the ones who control all that technology.
I'm no neo-Luddite, and I'd love to have all those things you mention, but I wouldn't trust Bill Gates to wash my dog, if there was any profit to be had in shooting it, instead. And when was the last time we saw a major cure for anything? Not since Dr. Salk cured Polio in the '50s, again, because there's more money to be made in treatments than cures. ='[.]'=
@Raycheetah I'll agree that the medical industry is much more interested in getting your money than getting you better, but that's on capitalism, not on science. But I'll add that survival rates for AIDS and cancer have increased by hundreds of percent since the 50s, as has the quality of life for sufferers of nearly every chronic disease. Besides, this isn't a movie about a company abusing its power, its about the possibility of the catastrophic failure of technology.
@RincewindsHat66 But they're not saying that. They clearly say that MISUSE of science is the problem. Science is a tool, not a conscious thing. Similar themes can be found in Fringe, where both sides use science, but the bad guys misuse it.
@Thepocalypse How do you "misuse" science? You could kill a lot of people with a giant space-laser, but you could kill just as many with a sharp rock. The rock will just take longer. Kings and emperors have been controlling people for thousands of years. Technology hasn't helped them to do it any better, if anything, it's hindered their ability to foster the atmosphere of ignorance and isolation among the people that they're trying to control.
@RincewindsHat66 I agree with you - it seems that primitive, unconscious motives push us towards fearing the unknown in almost all aspects of our lives. "Don't push us outside our comfort zones!" could be our culture's motto.
We need not to fear science, but those who wield it. It's more profitable to demonize science and the intellectuals behind it, rather than the real-life villains (who get away everyday with crimes more amazing than fiction) who run our companies and governments.
@RincewindsHat66 How about looking at it from the point of view of a director, who wants to show one of the possible scenarios of what might happen if we don't handle this influx of technological knowledge correctly.. does that help ?
@RincewindsHat66 Totally agree. Yeah we have glitches in technology, but guess what, we fix them. Steam engines were notorious for over-pressurizing and exploding and I'm sure some people saw them as evil at, but we popped open the schematics, made some changes, added pressure release valves, and rebuilt the damn things until we got it right. Apollo 1 killed three men, wasn't till Apollo 11 that we finally landed on the moon. Our tenacity and problem solving is what makes humanity strong.
@RincewindsHat66 Oh really? Who gives you that tech? If you create your own stuff, no way the invisible gov is gonna do you. But almost everyone of us buy shit we don't need and believe undoubtly every fuckin fact "scientists" says. I don't know what kind of twisted propaganda this show will bring through our minds, but really (and this is for all of you who arises "science" as a god): research beyond the massmedia, including the so called "science" media.
@RincewindsHat66 Black and white thinking never helped anyone. Being intentional with our technological decisions rather than doing anything just because we can is not advocating a return to barbarism. Some research may show you just how much impulsive drives in tech applications have hurt as much as healed. This is an important issue and we need to have more dialog on it.
@stoverassociates Name one single instance where a technological innovation has hurt more than helped, I'm interested to know what it could be. Science and technology have had to slowly inch forward over the last 3 hundred years, because people who fear change clutch at its ankles and scream "No!". And as for my thinking being black and white, in the words of Bill Watterson, "sometimes that's the way things are."
@RincewindsHat66 I'm merely saying that for people to be conscientious and discerning in their decisions on how to use technology isn't fear-based or backward. The question that many artists are posing now is not whether or not technology is "good," but rather how the very idea of what it means to be human will be questioned and also what hidden costs might lie in the changes we are very eager to make. Oh, thalidomide is the best example I have. I agree with you that New-Luddism isn't good.
@RincewindsHat66 I'm merely saying that for people to be conscientious and discerning in their decisions on how to use technology isn't fear-based or backward. @stoverassociates My big problem is that really aren't any "pro-science" movies coming out. Yes, science fiction has always been a way to comment on the potential implications of new technologies and discoveries, but every movie I see these days seems to be built around the "science has gone too far!" angle. I'd like to see the other side of the coin. Also, thalidomide was a failed experiment, like radium supplements. It didn't actually work, so I wouldn't classify it as an "advancement".
@RincewindsHat66 Well said. I struggle to find "optimistic" sci-fi myself. There's an anthology of short stories called "Shine," compiled by Jetse de Vries that Solaris put out a year or two ago. It is supposed to challenge the usual dystopian views of the future with ideas that we will get it right and have a firm handle on our science. I've read a few of them and their well-written, though they still imply a sort of "dark age" to get through. It's worth checking out anyway.
It's science. New inventions are used in every part of economy. It is how the development of our civilization works. That is why we developed so fast in the past 40 years... For example new prostheses used in medicin technology could in the future become spare parts for soldiers in the military. And i guess the human race will face such circumstances in the future. But i wouldnt estimate that happening in the next 10 years...
@xAnalphabetx "For example new prostheses used in medicin technology could in the future become spare parts for soldiers in the military." you sure it's not the other way around? -.-
if ther's ever going to be mechanic protheses fully replacing an arm, it will definitely be funded by military ressources and not by private healthcare enterprises

@schootingstarr yes it often is. Behind all is the money and the profit of the outcome. Always a matter of supply and demand. And additionally i think cloning will become a bigger topic in the future. One of the biggest moral conflict topics nowadays.
