EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION, AS USUAL. Thank you Naztazia. My one problem is at the beginning trying to identify which is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chain; not sure which is considered the 1st chain in the sequence. I will reply the video a few hundred times and i think eventually i will figure it out. Thank you for these wonderful teaching videos. Your's are the best and i can't learn from anyone else!
Thank you so much for these instructions - they are the easiest to understand that I have found. It was nice to NOT be frustrated while learning to chain!
This was a great way for me and my boyfriend to learn how to crochet!! The video is super detailed to make it easy for even the most impatient people like myself. Thank you so much for putting so many different techniques. You have really helped make this an easy learning process!! :D
@naztazia Please forgive my ingnorance, but I just want to make sure I understand everything correctly, from what I have seen and read here. In video 1, it tells us to chain one stitch at the end of the row, then turn. So, no matter the stitch we are learning, we simply chain one, turn our work, and continue on. Is this correct?
@onceaprice Hello! Depending upon the first stitch in the row - you will chain either 1 (for single crochet), 2 (for half double crochet), 2 or 3 (for double crochet), 3 or 4 (for triple crochet). The number of chains at the beginning of a row can vary depending upon the hook and yarn size. Normally crochet patterns will specify precisely how many chains to chain after finishing a row, then turning to begin a new row of stitches.
@naztazia Thank you for that clarification. I have printed it off and put it in my "bag" to keep for future reference. While practicing the different stitches on your videos and to give me experience, I figured I'd make a few scarves. Do you have any other suggestions. I am completely new at this, and attemping to learn via YouTube. LOL! :-) It's been great so far!
Thank you for uploading these videos. I watched both this one and part 1 and they were both helpful :). I'm a visual learner and still a beginner at crocheting but haven't made anything in a long time so I needed a refresher.
Thanks! That really helped! I was really confused on what was meant by: "crochet through back loop only", so I'm really glad you put that in there. Thank you!
This helped me a lot thank you! Though, for what kind of things do you use for each stitch? like for the single stitch..would you make a scarf? or would it be better to use some other stitch?
how do i attach a new skeen of yarn to my work? for example, when i've run out of yarn on one skeen and need to continue with a new one... or changing colors?
I just love this video: it's so clear and I was able to start doing/praticing stitches/projects. Very nice. Very effective comparing to other various videous I watched trying to get the basic/foundation of croche stitches that you just you can't learn. When I forget the stitches, I just come back here.
This is soooo helpful! I want to start to crochet and this explains it so well Thank you so much
But i have a question...if i want to make a baby blanket can i just triple or quadruple or as needed the number of chains...instead of 20 to make the blanket? Is that okay?
@Livinginlove22 Hiya! Yes you can do more chains and use the same instructions. Baby blankets are usually 36" wide by 36" long, so you can keep chaining (count all your chains as you do it) until you reach 36". Then just go back and forth with your stitches until it is 36" long. It might be nice to do stripes for a blanket - maybe do 10 rows of pink, followed by 10 rows of white, etc. (or blue/white green/yellow) Or you can get yarn that already has stripes or different colors in it.
@chinewmarie Hello - you can skip 3 and insert into the 4th stitch - or - depending upon how your crochet, you might need to skip 4 and insert into the 5th stitch. There is no official "rule" of how many chains to skip - it depends upon the height of your triple crochet. If you skip 3, and the triple crochet kind of bends down and flattens a little, you might need to skip 4. If you skip 4, and the space between the chains and the triple crochet looks too loose, you might need to skip only 3.
I will SOOOO be watching these as I start my projects. It's been proabably 20 years since anyone taught me even simple steps. I def need a refreshing lol very nice videos. Very thorough and well timed also .
I appreciate this video so much, knitting helped me quit smoking last year, I picked knitting bc it looked easy, but here lately the granny afghans have been calling my name and these two videos explain sooo much. Thank you for being clear. Great job!
Wonderful tutorial! I wish I spent more time with my grandma because now I have an interest in crochet and knitting but had no one to follow. Thanks! Peace and Blessings.
woah. okay so we cast on (erm... chained) 8 stitches. but then we skipped the first three and now we only have 5 stitches? do we always always have to skip those first 3 when doing dc? so does that mean you always have to start with 3 more than you really need? can you ever just NOT skip those 3 and just begin at the first one?
I have just started crocheting again after a 31 years break. I only ever did a baby blanked for my daughter so I decided to give it a go. thankyou so much for your well presented video and instructions. thanks for the videos! it's really helpful as it's very details on both description and the picture compared with other tutorial videos on youtube. :)
both of your videos have helped me understand so much better! i got a beginners kit and the book confused me, then i found these and i get it now! thank you ^_^
This has helped me so much. Thank you. But I am having a problem at the turning point at the end of the chain. Can you please show where the hook should go in order to begin the next row. I am ok on the second row but after that I keep losing stitches. My rows get shorter and shorter!
@grandmabarb55 That used to happen to me too. There are two ways to solve this problem until your eyes get used to seeing the last stitch. 1)You will have to keep counting your stitches to make sure you don't leave the last one off. OR, 2)Put a stitch marker in your very first stitch on the row, then when you finish that row, you will see that last stitch with the stitch marker. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much, that was great!! I have just recently been inspired with crochet and very much appreciate the explanation and demonstration of the various stitches. Am looking forward to trying more projects :)
@TheMarakuya Wonderful! I bet that baby's hat is gorgeous. I just had a little boy (he's 8 weeks old now) and just got finished making several hats for him. Glad the video could help :)

Hey Naztazia, I am trying to make a blanket from a simple double crochet/ single crochet. Are there any patterns that are good for beginners like me that you are aware of ? I checked the all free crochet page and it seems most of it is a bit above my skill level! Thanks!!
i wanted to learn to crochet, so i went out and bought a video, after watching it and rewinding and rewinding and rewinding i still could not figure out what they were talking about, someone mentioned checking out youtube to see if there was any help here, i stumbled upon your videos and have already started crocheting!! your videos are for an actual beginner, not what some people think a beginner should already know- thank you so much, i'm very excited to start working on something big!! :-D
@morning1princess Awesome! Thank you so much for the feedback. Sorry for being late on my response - recently had a baby boy. He's taking most of my time these days :) Thanks for stopping by!
I found this really useful after searching youtube for the right video! I've been struggling to move on from a chain stitch! But I'm still confused about something, if you don't mind helping me. If you skip three stitches at the beginning of each row when you double crochet, aren't you going to have less stitches in your work? Does that not make it smaller?
And Congratulations on your pregnancy!! It's a very lucky baby to have a mummy who can crochet like you! =D
Finally crochet makes sense to me. I have so many patterns I want to do and my 2yr old daughter fell for a duck afghan that I want to make for her, I am so glad I found your videos so I can do this.
I really like the cardigan you are wearing in your videos, is that something you have a pattern for?
both part 1 and 2 are excellent Natazia. Can you please tell me what to do after i have made my 17 loops in the circle.. I took me 30 mins just to start the first loop, then an hour to figure out the 16... now im stuck. thanks heaps.
Thanks visually and soundly explained! I needed a refresher after learning sitting at my grandmothers knee who has since passed some 30 years ago.....I remembered the basics but you bought it home for me! Now I can continue her tradition!
@razberyX10 It's so wonderful to hear you are continuing the tradition. That's exactly why I made these videos - my Gram taught me many years ago too. She has since passed on, so I wanted to help keep alive the crochet tradition that we all love.
@marista31 Thanks for the kindness and sorry for the delay in response. Absolutely - many people make lots of money both in person as well as online via Etsy and other online handmade good sites.
I love these videos! The others I watched before I found yours were unclear, too fast, and the people did not explain the words they were saying. I know, as a total beginner, I did not know there was more than one type of stitch!!! You helped me so much, thank you!!
@sehryn Hello! Glad the video could help. You can certainly do the triple crochet in the 5th chain from the hook. There are really no precise rules for this, and what I have given in the video are just suggestions to get you started. Most of the time the number of chains to skip for either the first half double/double/triple crochet depends solely upon the pattern you are working on as well as the size of the yarn/hook you are using. Hope this helps!
Dear naztazia, I am very thankfull that you posted these videos on YouTube. Thanks to you I learned how to crochet.I made a crochet stickman and 2 pyramids (the first one didn't turn out so well) Maybe I will make a video to show them to you. Anyway, Thanks!
@Mrgoodjack Hello! I apologize for the delay in my response. Glad the videos could help. That's awesome you are already working on patterns and projects. I think it's great if you make a video - we all need to keep crochet alive and well on YouTube :) Take care!
Wonderful videos! I have a question. When I am double crocheting, each time I turn my work do I start my first dc on the 4th chain over? Or was this only when I first begin?
@80WClark Hello! With double crochet, when you turn your work, some patterns will have you chain 2, 3, or sometimes 4 chains first. That serves as the "first" double crochet on the new row. Next you then leave those chains alone - and put your hook in, not the top of the very first stitch of the row below, but the top of the second stitch in from the row below. Hope this makes sense.
I have a question about the triple crochet. I'm 11 years old and your first video really helped me refresh. In the triple crochet which loop do you insert the crochet hook?
@GOFISHIEGONE Hello! If you start off with a chain of 10 stitches, you can insert your crochet hook in the 3rd or 4th chain (depending upon the pattern) for the triple crochet. For subsequent rows, you can insert your crochet hook for the triple crochet in the same manner as you would a single crochet - either underneath both loops from the previous row - or just the back loop of the previous row (again depending upon what the pattern calls for). Hope this helps (if not let me know).
I have a question about the triple crochet. I'm 11 years old and your first video really helped me refresh. In the triple crochet which loop do you insert the crochet hook?
so i think i see what's happening with my counting...i chained 25 to do a half double crochet stitch and when i finished i ended up with 23 chains..Is that supposed to happen since in the beginning u start with the third chain? should i not be concerned. Also while i'm crocheting and if i end up with less than 23 stitches am i supposed to just increase at the very end of the chain?
@foreverdreamer2012 Hiya! Plain single crochet, or half double crochet, or double crochet scarves work nice for guys. Actually if you search on Google for something like - free crochet pattern harry potter - you'll find scarves inspired by the Harry Potter movies. Those scarves, done in traditional male colors, usually make very nice gifts for men.
When you create a slip stich and you join it how do you like, finish it off or how are you supposed to cut off the string and then prevent it from coming undone??? I am a little confused with that. ( I have not tried it yet. )
@LoonyLizzieIsAwesome Hiya! The video you posted the comment to re: finishing slip knot endings is actually Part 2 of the basics of crochet. The Part 1 video for the basics of crochet shows you how to weave those ends with a darning needle into the crochet work, then snip it off. You'll find that tutorial near the end of the Part 1 video. Hope this helps.
I've tried to learn crochet by books and by videos similar to yours, but I didn't get it til I found your video. You include some minor details that are important. Great Video!
@xLmaoMichy Hello! Thank you for stopping by and sorry for the delay in my response. I'm taking a little break from videos for awhile but will be starting them up shortly. Will put amigurumi on the to do list! :)

Wonderful videos! I have a question. When I am double crocheting, each time I turn my work do I start my first dc on the 4th chain over? Or was this only when I first begin?
80WClark 1 year ago
@80WClark Hello! With double crochet, when you turn your work, some patterns will have you chain 2, 3, or sometimes 4 chains first. That serves as the "first" double crochet on the new row. Next you then leave those chains alone - and put your hook in, not the top of the very first stitch of the row below, but the top of the second stitch in from the row below. Hope this makes sense.

I have a question about the triple crochet. I'm 11 years old and your first video really helped me refresh. In the triple crochet which loop do you insert the crochet hook?
Please respond
GOFISHIEGONE 1 year ago
@GOFISHIEGONE Hello! If you start off with a chain of 10 stitches, you can insert your crochet hook in the 3rd or 4th chain (depending upon the pattern) for the triple crochet. For subsequent rows, you can insert your crochet hook for the triple crochet in the same manner as you would a single crochet - either underneath both loops from the previous row - or just the back loop of the previous row (again depending upon what the pattern calls for). Hope this helps (if not let me know).

so i think i see what's happening with my counting...i chained 25 to do a half double crochet stitch and when i finished i ended up with 23 chains..Is that supposed to happen since in the beginning u start with the third chain? should i not be concerned. Also while i'm crocheting and if i end up with less than 23 stitches am i supposed to just increase at the very end of the chain?

what crochet stitch do you recommend for a scarf made for a guy?
foreverdreamer2012 1 year ago
@foreverdreamer2012 Hiya! Plain single crochet, or half double crochet, or double crochet scarves work nice for guys. Actually if you search on Google for something like - free crochet pattern harry potter - you'll find scarves inspired by the Harry Potter movies. Those scarves, done in traditional male colors, usually make very nice gifts for men.

When you create a slip stich and you join it how do you like, finish it off or how are you supposed to cut off the string and then prevent it from coming undone??? I am a little confused with that. ( I have not tried it yet. )
LoonyLizzieIsAwesome 1 year ago
@LoonyLizzieIsAwesome Hiya! The video you posted the comment to re: finishing slip knot endings is actually Part 2 of the basics of crochet. The Part 1 video for the basics of crochet shows you how to weave those ends with a darning needle into the crochet work, then snip it off. You'll find that tutorial near the end of the Part 1 video. Hope this helps.
