I was born & raised in western pa. I don't live there anymore....nore do many of the people I grew up with. Hes absolutely right. West of Altoona is a backward area. It the northern tip of the south in many ways. Bad econony, lots of bible thumpers, & racists as well! I can say that with some authority, having grown up in johnstown. Its nice to come home and visit, but hard to stay in that area as an adult, unless you want to live in the 1960s again.

1. I don't trust McCain because he seems very angry and erratic
2. His heathcare policies are very dangerous to the elderly

The trouble is, there are certain true things that politicians simply aren't allowed to say without getting into trouble, and this is one of them. That older Americans, rural Americans, small town Americans, tend more often to be racist, homophobic, etc. is true, just as it's true that most Americans fifty years ago tended to have these views more often than people today.
These two things go together -- people with "old-fashioned" virtues also tend to have "old-fashioned" bigotries.
