  • we're not kids maaaaaaan

  • Hey man I just started to learn the guitar and I love this song. You taught it brilliantly and I just wanted to say keep it up and I hope to learn more from you. Thanks a lot man, really.

  • Thanks mehh you're a great teacher. Keep on posting, I'm learning

  • Thank you for this video i've always wanted to leanr how to play this song!!! I've added it to my favourites list on Youtube. =D

  • I need somebody to tell me where to put my fingers? LOL. T_T

  • a great teacher...and handsome as well ;) thanks for all your help!

  • What strings are you strumming. ?

  • You said we're playing this in a different Key because you wan't to keep us (beginners, apparently) from having to play the F chord.

So then this isn't the real version?

  • @zxxkcxxz all versions sound the same

  • your are soo amazing teacher thanks to you I can play the guitarr much better!!

  • @TheKaulitzLand So sweet! Glad it's helping. Thank you for letting me know!

  • @yourguitarsage for sure !! :D

  • hmmmm the writing is a little anoying over the cords

  • You are an absolutely incredible teacher. I suck so badly at arpeggio, and I actually did what you said and kept practicing it in front of the T.V, and got a little better at it, and I love how you speak beginner, and use small words that we not-so-professionals can understand. Thanks for the time you spent to do this.

  • @TjMrazFan Thanks my friend. That's a really nice message. Thank you for noticing.

  • @yourguitarsage I just thank you for putting your videos up for free, and actually going slow enough to understand. Also, at 0:51, are you bending the string, or what is that that you do? Adds a fine touch to the song, but can't quite figure it out. It's right after the step up the strings.

  • @TjMrazFan Thanks bro. It's frets 1, 2 and 3 on the A string.

  • i love your sing beautiful

  • @Themusicxo your sing?

  • @MrGuitarGuy978 u mean that i sing????

  • I recommended you to my friends Dad, i was over there fiddling around with his daughters guitar and he asked where i learned to play so good and I said youtube.. he said really?! I said yeah, I've always learned from this guy his names 'yourguitarsage' and this other guy Marty Schwartz. He asked me to write the names down he'd check them out =D

  • I love the tutorial except for one thing. The words you have across the screen make it really difficult to see what you are doing

  • Is there a way to play this song without a capo?

  • fingerpicking, please tell me which strings do u strumm?

    bass then G,B,E,B,G?

  • i didn´t understnad which strings ich have to pluck :S

  • Thanks for this! I went looking for something simple I could play for the little woman on Vday, and this is perfect.

  • Just a few random facts about the song...in Shrek, John Cale actual does it, but for legal reason, I assume, Rufus's version ends up on the soundtrack.

Cale had seen Cohen do this "different", now popular version of the song in concert and later asked him if he could record it this way. The story goes, Leonard then gave Cale 15 pages of notes and lyrics!

One more thing, the song is Cohen's most covered.

  • i dont have a capo, can i still play this song?

  • @marcoupha Yeah you can still play this songit will just be in a lower key. It will sound the same. Don't let not having a capo slow you down! (Still there good to have)

  • Good job but one thing annoyed me.. You're not saying which strings you are playing in order when picking and it's also very difficult to see which you are playing cuz of the link of your. Please put it somewhere else so we can see which strings you are picking :)

  • Great job. The only thing I think could be better is if you put the link to your website at the top instead of at the bottom because it covers the guitar at the bottom.

  • i personally like the jeff buckly version

  • Ok seriously, do you need a guitar that is long to play this song or something? Because I tuned it and I know its tuned right, and everytime I play the same as you, it doesn't seems to sound right.. This really fucked up, Almost all tutorial videos has a guitar that is long. So annoyed right..

  • You are better than my teacher who speak in my launguage.

    Just...Thank You;)

  • Dude, PLEASE remove the title on the screen....

  • what is the picking pattern

    please give the string number

    for example: 4,3,2,5,4

    thanks

  • what strings does he pick on the E chord

  • This is a great video, but please, take off the title! You don't need it, it's redundant to the information posted under it, and it covers up your fingers. Not real helpful when trying to watch your hands! But thanks for doing this. I have to get the bar thing, I guess. Can't wait to learn this.

  • love your song vid

  • I really like your teaching. You do a really good job. This video was a huge help man! Thank you mucho!!

  • i like it, thx for the video (i bought the ebook too)

  • what strings do you pick ??

  • Kids? O.o

  • Ever notice when the singer says the forth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift. He's talking about the chords you are playing. The forth chord in the song and the fifth chord in the song and the minor fall means the Em chord. The major lift, he plays d major. He also says "but you don't really care for music do you"? It means that you aren't paying attention what he's saying or you don't know what the chords mean. Interesting.

  • @TheFingathing Yes, I always teach this song to my students in the number system and always mention to that to them. VERY cool. Very observant. Insanely cool song!

  • @TheFingathing no duh.... "i heard there was a secret chord... it goes like this..." what the heck was he supposed to be talking about? -.- french fries? ffs

  • @helldemon618 Hey man. I just noticed it and I didn't expect guitarists to not understand it. This is kind of unnoticeable to people who don't play guitar or piano.

  • @TheFingathing i didnt play guitar yet... though i understood it o_o

  • @TheFingathing what is the second chord

  • @TheFingathing i noticed that too, very interesting..

  • @TheFingathing

It depends on what key you are in.

  • @TheFingathing I was gonna thumbs up,but I don't wanna ruin the 69. :D

  • @TheFingathing by far the most interesting comment i have ever read, way to dig deep and pay attention man, slipped right by me too!

  • @TheFingathing by far the most interesting comment i have ever read, way to dig deep and pay attention man, slipped right by me too!

  • @TheFingathing lmfao its not exactly the most cryptic thing in the world:

"you dont really care for music do ya, well it goes like this the fourth the fifth..." seriously.

  • @TheFingathing i noticed that when i learned this on piano XD

  • can you do a guitar tutorial for Flying High by Jem. I cant find a good 1. i cant figure out the strumming. thanks. ur a great teacher!

  • did he say the barred note was an Em or Dm ?

  • Hey bud - I went from just buying a guitar and hardly knowing a chord to being able to play this song in an hour - plus I learned all the chords in the process - thanks a zillion!

  • Hey man! I've been playing original indy rawk for years. Just recently I started doing some covers for friends weddings - which actually got me a few payed wedding gigs. Your instructions are by far the best on youtube! You make light work, of what can be a dull and tedious experience. Most of the time, I can watch your instructions once, and no problem! Thanks a ton!!! Anytime I have I have a requested song I don't know, your the first I go to... even if it's one I've never heard before

  • I watched a bunch of your videos and finally decided to buy your eBook. I did not expect it to only cost $10. I think the package of charts and instructions combined with these well done youtube-lessons is insanely good compared to the price - thanks alot for your effort!

  • thank you so much for posting this video! I love this song I'm trying to play it! I', from Vietnam! you're ve helpful ,and your lesson is very clear! i can understand it easily! you're my teacher! hihi may I know my teaher's name is?

  • The words and website reference are over your hands...

  • You rock dude, I like the way you play your guitar, but I'd like you could tell me how is the fingerpicking when you do an arpegio for this song, thanks and continue with this great lessons

  • Well taught but I struggle to see your fingers through the huge advert at the bottom :(

  • @kimmobey You got that right.. I was waiting for the advert to fade out.. Lesson is free so guess u have to put up with a little crap.. Is a good lesson though

  • Hey sage can you help me out with the picking for each individual chord?

  • Hey sage can you help me out with the picking for each individual chord?

  • Hey sage can you help me out with the picking for each chord? I'm having very little luck.

  • Sage will you please explain the exact picking for each chord?

  • Sage will you PLEASE explain your exact picking for each chord in the song? I'm having a terrible time with trying to figure it out.

  • first, you're awesome, second, Im not sure if you take suggestions, but I'd love You belong to me (Jason Wade from lighthouse) which was also a shrek song.. That's be siicckkk!!!

  • Just to let you know... When you split the C/D chord, you play 6-4-1/4-3-1 (reffering to the strings). You can play them with both the 3rd and fourth finger together! It sounds like a full chord. Try it out. You can also add the third finger on the b string when you play your G chord. It sounds pretty cool too.

  • Oh so u just finger pick the last note of the chord and the first 3 strings then reverse and stop at 3. G: 6 x x 3 2 1

    Em: x 5 x 3 2 1 C: x 5 x 3 2 1 D: x x 4 3 2 1

  • @killAFreakZeak correction Em: 6 x 3 2 1

  • Cool!

  • you have a good song list to learn but you teach them too quickly.. why not slow it down and make 2 videos. part 1 and 2?

  • what strings do you pick in what order? im a beginner and im having a little trouble! I love this song!

  • amazing dude

  • Awesome video, super helpful... one suggestion.... your watermark at the bottom of the screen covers both of your hands while you're playing. Kind of hard to see what you're doing while you're explaining it all.

  • dammit too hard LOL

  • you remind me of like a mixer of ryen renolds and mark walberge

  • Thanks a lot again! Great lesson

  • he is picking the low E string and the last 3 strings

    6-X-X-3-2-1

  • First not a kid, but other than that good job man!

  • once agen>>yuu r the best bro

  • IDK WHAT STRINGS TO PICK1

  • Now when you pluck the strings do you only pluck the strings for that chord or the first four every time?

  • You are great and cute!

  • what r u looking at but that was good

  • tab please!

  • i love all the hats you wear [: and this song is beautiful!! thanks for the lesson!!

  • you kinda look like paul rudd

  • I'm not good at plucking. I prefer strumming. Are there any way I can play it by strumming? Anyway, you've helped me a lot. Thanks.

  • great

  • Ur hot.

    Thanks for your help (:

  • thank you very much.i'm a fan

  • Im sorry to say this, but you helped me with your vid only a bit.

becuase i dont understand, which sides you pick when you play cords like "Bm", "C" and "D"

hope you can help me :)

  • Probably been mentioned, but it's originally by Jeff Buckley.

    Nice lesson though, helped alot.

  • I love the video. It helped. But a close-up on your hand how you move it is really defficult to see. So could you tell which strings you are using, because that would be wonderful. ;)

  • thank you so much!

at the start when you show yourself picking the song, is that actually the same pattern you show us later on? it sounds so pro! :)

  • nice lesson, but putting your logo over the most important part of the video is making it very difficult to follow. Anyhow, thanks for sharing this.

  • you have your logo posted right over your fretboard.......

  • I can't see what your doing with the finger picking! Help!

  • thank you ace video already gotten a lot further with this than just the sheet music! thanks!!

  • hey this is one of my dads favourite songa and he is im canada atm and im gonna surprise him by learning this thank you !! :)

  • Thanks for the lesson..Cool to use the 5th position for the C chord..I really enjoyed this lesson..I de tune my 12 string for my voice, but the finger pick and chords were following your lead..Thanks..You are a great teacher..Way to go on sharing your experience with us..

    Craig..

  • Please move your website text down so it doesn't block the view of your hands. Thanks!

  • do you have to use that keepo (that thing on the guitar neck)

  • @pjoach09 you could always play bar chords but if u don't then yepp you should have to use the capo to get it to sound like that (: the jeff buckley version is easier and you don't need a capo to play it. you can make your own capo, look it up (that might help) pencil and a rubber band should do the trick.

  • thanks!!!!

  • @rikki2200: bm is barring the second fret and then making an Am shape with your 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers (i.e. 2nd finger, 2nd string 3rd fret from the capo, 3rd finger, 3rd string 4th fret and fourth finger fourth string fourth fret) takes a bit of getting used to, but you get there.

@zombiemig - dáddarios are a dec3ent choice for beginner or if you wanna go fancy / expensive then get elixir nanoweb for about 13pounds, 20 dollars.

    happy playing

  • Which strings do I pick? He never tells us..

  • @zombiemig ok...im not a master at guitar so this is gonna sound dorky, lol, but u play A, D, G, and for B and E you stum both of those with your ring finger at the same time!

  • @zombiemig use G chord as example. so you would pick 6,3,2,1,2,3.

  • @zombiemig theres only six, figure it out

  • @zombiemig

    from up:

    6/8: bass(6 or 5 or 4),3,2,1,2,3

    3/8: bass,3,2

    Hope I helped!

  • @zombiemig nylon i heard,

  • @zombiemig always follow the base note, than 3 2 1 2 3. G would be 632123. C would be 532123. D would be 432123

  • @zombiemig ??? What is 6:08?.. Tells you exactly strings to pick

  • @zombiemig Whenever you fingerpick it is good practice to use your thumb for the bass notes (E,A,D strings) and index for the G string, middle for the B string, and ring for the high e string. So the way he plays it a G chord would be: E string, G string, B string, e string, B string, G string OR thumb, index, middle, ring, middle, index. Your thumb is the only finger that picks different strings depending on the chord you play. The rest are dedicated to a string. Hope this helps.

  • how do you do the bm?

  • x2443x i think

  • x24432

  • thanks

  • wow amazing!!

  • When playing the split measure CD you hit the root first and then which of the fingerings for the 2nd and 3rd?

  • not to rain on your parade, but instead of playing the Bm, it should really be D#dim. should be easier to play for beginners (i'm guessing this video is aimed at beginners, anyway), too (apart from being the "correct" chord ;-), if played with the root of the voicing on 1st fret od the "D"-string. besides that: good lesson, very intelligible.

  • wow, it's great!

    does it all the song..?

  • this video really helped me learn how to play Hallelujah!

  • Thanks captain obvious

  • Been playing guitar for 7 days. I can now play this song. Lol, I hope you teach people in RL how to play broski, you'd be bomb at it.

  • thanks

  • Hey Guitar Sage! been out of playin for many years but your work here has helped me begin a whole new phase. Many thanx!

    Rick Dubya

  • When you pick Em you dont really need to hold the Em chord right? Because you dont play those strings? just 6-3-2-1?

  • @johannesisacson

    Correct!!

  • Ok! :) thanks for a great lesson. Your other videos helped a lot too.

  • I'm going to have to look at this all on paper or something anyway but you do realize that your hands on the guitar are covered by letters advertising the site?

  • @yourguitarsage can u please tell me what strings to exactly pick for each arpeggio and the fingers used? i didnt get what u were trying to tell!
