I've seen Phil live many times and two things I can say for sure about him: 1) He's one of the best trumpeteers ever (even his colleagues will attest to that) 2) He tends to overplay in certain situations and it comes out bad....this is one of those times. One more thing: As someone who has plenty of experience in this field, when a performer sees someone in the audience recording him, he's not going to give you anything that will make you lots of money. Hint: Look closely at 25 second mark
Does anybody think why Phil played bad? You guys just assume that he sucks at live music. Did you ever think that he had that crappy audio system and no real instruments. Or maybe because the mic was bad? To me, he didn't even sound bad. His whole performance was supposed to be amusing and somewhat funny to people who really study music.
My Dad got saved at a PD concert in the early 80s and it was the best time in my family's life. I kno all his songs from way back then but I am trying to find teh "Mount Up On Wings of Eagles" song. Mebbe I haven't looked hard enuff but I hope I find it. Normally I like any hard secular rock you can put a name to but Phil represent the best way that I could ever worship Jesus ever. I identify and love Phil- Thank you for giving my feelings a voice.
I'm sorry but I just couldn't resist the urge to comment. As a professional player and one who has heard him sound better, this is complete garbage. I never liked his over-processed sound but he made his point. I've heard "weekend warriors" who sound just like this!
no wonder you didn't like it. You only like that dead, formal, old traditional music. Go and criticize other people, but not Phil. You don't know half of much music than he does.
who is to know what does and doesn't honor God, and if that is or isn't on Phil's heart than God knows it...but this is a pretty entertaining cheesy performance...not to mention the mullett...hahaha.
This guy is a legend & he shouldn't be anymore embarrassed than anyone else who has an off night, including all other legends in all other venues. I've been listening to Phil Driscoll since I was a kid and everything else I've heard him do is absolutely brilliant.
dude put up your chops on youtube buddy...its easy to sit behind a computer and type "talking" like a pro...enlightned...thanks for ur "self gratifying" tasteless comments...really...tke your hands of keyboard and place them on the horn. let me hear your "enlightened" playing!! haha loser bro
@Mightyhorns99 Amen, brother! None of us have perfect records, however anything played for the Lord is good in His eyes. It's a pain when my chops suddenly hone in on the screech range, makes it tough to play anything else. However, I'll take a 'g' above double 'c' any day of the week. It would be a pleasure to play with you sometime my friend.
It's funny how folks only zero in on the bad, & magnify it more than the good. So Phil was convicted of income tax evasion - big freakin' deal! In comparison to his millions, the amount of money in question was small, was over a 4 year period, & it's only a year of time in a federal prison camp. Really, shouldn't the crooked government officials be the ones in prison as well? Just a thought. Phil's a good man overall, but followed bad advice from his accountants. I love his music.
Which is the more offensive - the trumpet trash or the vocal? Not an original idea in his head, and those that he tried to copy - sorry, Phil, you don't have the skills. Jesus loves you, but I think you are a turd. And a fraud - you are second only to Cartman and "Faith Plus One." Book of Daniel C.
Wayne Bergeron had to have been playing lead on that backup track. No one else sounds like that. Especially Phil Driscoll. I was very dissapointed with his high notes, but he's pulling double duty in also singing horrible, Michael McDonald-style arrangments of Christmas carols. I'm sure he sounds better when he's just playing.
I dunno man, theres a lot of really great lead players out there so it may not have been Wayne. But yeah, no offense to driscoll or anything but wat the hell was that...?
Enjoyed the solo after all the high notes. Must be the way it was recorded or the quality of the video but the beginning of the solo just sounded like noise. Other than that, very nice.

WHOA! Phil must have been pretty pissed off about something that day. He normally doesn't play squeaky whistle-register stuff.
Looks like he just said "F* this. I'm a trumpet god. I'm gonna squeak as high as I can, and they're going to like it".
Everyone has had a day like that, yes?

Sounds like my dogs squeaky toy when he starts the trumpet solo, some nice trumpet playing on the backing track though :)

uh...I don't make posts very often, but this clip warrants a post.
That was just not good. Terrible self gratifying tasteless trumpet playing...not the good kind of self gratifying tasteless trumpet playing either....
this guy should be quite embarrassed

I have seen him live twice, and I do have to say this certainly isnt one of his best performances . He is in fact an amazing trumpet player.

There is nothing funny here, only people who don't understand the concept of improvisation in jazz will laugh at this...

funkyfaculty - please post a video of any of your public performances so we can see how it should be done.
PS: Who is this performer trying to copy? Thanks for letting us know all the facts you so obviously are too superior to share.

sounds like most dont know about music. What Phil was doing at first is commonly used in jazz pieces. He's and excellent trumpeter.
