It honestly just depends on how well you maintain the weapon. My grandfather killed a german officer during the war and we have it still in the family possesion. My father when I was young took me to fire the gun and it never jammed on me then and when I loaded it up around a month ago and fired it it didn't jam then either. Just had to make sure it was cleaned every time. Never had a problem.

I own a Beretta,glock,sig,kel tec,ruger, and two colts. They are all fine pistols. Even with the greater capacity of the 9mm, I would still rather have the colt or sig in a gunfight (both chambered in .45). the glock would come in second (.40)

I got mine for FREE. My dads a police man and when the South Wales Police done a gun amnesty a few years ago... A 70 year old came in with his fathers MINT condition 1916 Luger. Mad I know, as Im a collector of militaria my dad persuaded him with a bottle of Bells and a Jack Daniels not too hand it in but to pass it on to me.
All firearms handed in were destined to be melted down to prevent gun crime. DONT worry most were air rifles!

@DasObjectivist I know its unbelievable! Apart from the magazine all numbers are matching, it even comes with its origional blue finish. The magazine is the old style too with the wooden base.
Unfortionatly South Wales is in Britain so its deactivated, Still you cant fault a free Luger with history!
Im not due to a promised, but if I were to sell it over hear I could easily get £1000.
Knife amnestys are great too, the majority are kitchen knifes but some are of historical interest!

@Gheorgyi It's a Lugar. You can tell by the circular piece on the reciever and the way it toggles up when the magazine is expended. The P-38 has a typical slide such as you see on any autoload pistol.

Ok it really wasn't that great of a gun. 9mm has almost as much stopping power as a 22.. Whitch, don't get me wrong, could EASILY kill you if it hits the right spot. But that's the challange, hitting the right spot. Several people have been shot by this thing and havnt noticed until hours after impact. It's a good pistol. The first to chamber the 9mm.

@jaxdaman999 YOUR A TARD!! a .22 is 1/3 the size of a 9mm, a 9mm is 147 grams while a .22 is 33 grams. a 22 has barely enough power to kill a groundhog, a 9mm would blow a groundhogs jaw off. Also, the luger 9mm is ONLY NAMED LUGER BECAUSE THATS WHO MADE IT, the p.08 wasnt the first to fire it, it was the first mass produced weapon to fire it. I own 2 lugers.

My grandfather who passed away in the last couple of years, had brought back a Luger P08 with a brown leather holster from the war. I've seen only a photo, but they appear in good condition, especially the holster. The estate values it at $2,400, and I would like to know if that sounds about right, or too much. If anyone has a good idea, please let me know.

The Luger P-08 is beautiful, complex, exotic, etc. However, it is extremely demanding and much less reliable than a colt 1911. Perhaps because it was the Americans who won the war, not the Germans. rs.
I have a 1917 artillery in perfect condition. But I am to carry 100% 1911.

I own a Beretta,glock,sig,kel tec,ruger, and two colts. They are all fine pistols. Even with the greater capacity of the 9mm, I would still rather have the colt or sig in a gunfight (both chambered in .45). the glock would come in second (.40)

I am well aware that the us switched to 9mm. I am not denying that. The reason? Politics and NATO. All I am saying is, what I said in the comment: I would rather have a 1911a1 in my hand during that time. Incidentally, I don't believe the p08 had a greater round capacity .(maybe one round)

texbear21- I agree with you to an extent.. .45 vs 9mm in stopping power the .45 wins but there has to be a reason why our military not carries Beretta 92's 9mm as a side arm.. If you don't believe me you're full of shit because my brother in law is in the marine core and standard side are is the Beretta 9mm. The only advantage a 9mm has over a .45 is magazine capacity.

I would rather have a 9mm at my side in an combat situation that a .45 to be honest just because of capacity and ability to carry more rounds but I still want to get a .45 to add to my collection. I'm thinking a Glock 21 as I've been very interested in Glocks now for some reason when before I never cared for them..

Go for it!! The .45 is serious fun - one of my favourite rounds actually - and I find the recoil less snappy than the 9mm. Haven't tried the Glock 21 but the Glock 17 is a great gun, well-built and capable of shooting hot ammo. Good luck with it!
