I'm sorry, but I've watched this series several times. Clea Duvall is just plain terrible on this show. There is some amazing acting on this show and some very bad acting too. Amy Madigan is amazing and so is Cynthia Ettinger.

@alexerify1 one of my speculations is is "trying to go outside the laws of physics (god's laws) is evil." In the series Ben's mother might actually be right. In the finale Ben heals 3 people and then Justin kills 3, saying "I am the Lord's left hand." Ben moves life, but that moving of life might be what is itself unholy. I am not saying this idea is OK or sane for the real world, I mean we all want to escape suffering, and healing diseases is obviously good, but Carnivale is dark.

Moving life for good would not be inherently evil if used ethically which Ben did throughout the movie. His healing power is supposed to be Jesus-like while Justin is the opposite (demonic).

Ben's mother represents the more superstitious traditionalist and she re-killed the cat (not moral). The poor cat has to die again. Couldn't one argue that God gave Ben his healing powers and his mother is interfering?

This could have been the best show ever. Shame on HBO for not at least making a final movie to wrap the series up. Great acting, great sets, great writing. This was a great premise.

This is just like a scene in the book trilogy "Magic or Madness." A girl's mother drowns a cat in the basement because the girl had used magic to bring it back to life and the mother was explaining that magic shouldn't be used that way. The book is from 2005, so I wonder if the author borrowed from this series.

This scene is amazing. Both characters have abusive mothers and long-lost EVIL fathers. They could empathize a lot if they weren't both so confused, scared, repressed, and self-loathing.

Nick Stahl's character finally rebels against his mother at the end of this scene. "They ain't marked." He does great work in this series.

Clea Duvall - great actress, her shy, confused, dark character is one of the most interesting, attractive performances I've seen.

Always finding new stuff whenever i watch it,..it's simply amazing,..tho an unfinished series,..no one seems to know real reason(s) why it was cancelled but HBO surely ruined a good thing,..between this series and Rome,..i was locked in for the winter, lol. This show was great maybe the best series ever. Some people were frustrated by all the subtext and the fact that they didn't pound you over the head with "the answer" to every mystery, but that's part of what made the story so enjoyable.

It was cancelled after they made season 2.....they never had a chance to finish telling their story.....I thought that was reason enough. There is no Finish to the story because they werent able to tell it.

There is no answer because the 2 seasons were the first of three 'books'. Each book was part of thebigger overall story. It was canceled because it had to be committed to 2 seasons at a time, and the cost was VERY high, something like 5 mil an episode.

The show had a big audience but after a 3 or 4 episodes it dropped. HBO cancels two good show like this one and Deadwood only to cancel the two shows they hyped about to replace the shows.

Very nice. The part where Ben is holding the dead kitten, it was very Pet Semetary-ish.
