How can someone learn to teach a lead change when they're watching it on a horse who knows how to do one? He should use a horse who has never done it before, so whoever is looking at it will see mistakes and know how to correct it. Not the most helpful video I think.
Okay I am a little late since the last reaction was 2 years ago but I still want to give a thuims up on the video. Dennis, you have a great way of explaining. It a good thing I live in the netherlands. If I was living next to you, I would walking every day to watch you train and learn from you :-)
great vid..one thing also to remember is try not to always do the change in the center of the arena for your horse will always anticipate it..and thats bad for judges scoring seeing that .....
I read this in H&R: The horse needs to be moving forward with some energy. It's 3 beats. The 3rd beat is when you want to give your queue. The mane will actually lift up on the 2nd beat and down on the 3rd beat. I say to myself, "now, now, now" in rhythm to the 3rd beat to get my timing. If I'm on my left lead and want to change to the right, I apply pressure to the left side as I say "now."
I would say after ruling out a possible pain issue, get more control of his hip. Once you have control of his hip, you can direct where you want it to go and when. Practice side passing, moving his haunches, disengaging, etc.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to move my horses hips and have his nose go the other way. It's very frustrating. What are some exercises i could do? I can move the hindquarters and the shoulders but not at the same time.
This video is great. Dennis Bright is obviously a very talented and professional trainer. I'm sorry to say that I haven't heard of him until now. I've placed this video in my favorites section for later study. Thanks again!
my mare has a bad right lead, and hasn't been trained at all for reining. she's already 4 yrs old, and i don't know if I should try to train her myself with little experience; or spend money on a pro to train her. She's really a good horse and ahas a lot of potential.

Do not give this person money.

Dennis Bright is a fraud and a crook as evidenced by numerous "real" horsepeople who have escaped his "car salesman" tactics.

What should I do if my house does them but will only do them in the front? How can I get him to do them in the back also? Great video. Lots of help.
