  • wrestling changed so much because all i can think watching this is that it looks like a high school match and when you look at wrestling matches these days all you see is scrambling around bunch of flying squirrel take downs its crazy

  • As far as Dan Gable making wrestling what is today, that is true, he was centured for playing favorites during USA team selctions. Imagine all the great wrestler we never got to see compete. Lee Kemp was one of America's Great Wrestlers. Imagine he defeated Dan Gable as an 18 year old young man and went on to be a 4 time NCAA Finalist (3 time champ) and win three time World Champion. I imagine in1976 Gables weight class was not really that tough or maybe Lee could have won the Olympics at 17.

  • this is just depressing to watch.

  • Dan Gable had a perfect score in the Olympic

    Cael Sanderson never lost

John Smith won more Gold medals than anyone else

Who gives a shit? People can argue that Dan Gable is better than Cael Sanderson, or that John Smith is better than them, etc. But they're all a fuck ton better than you. Siding with any of them doesn't make you a part of their success.

Enjoy the beautiful privilege to watch them. Don't disgrace the sport by staging imaginary bouts and predicting the results.

  • cael sanderson is better

  • What year was this? Wow, mtxewrestler, your whole post is one sentence.

  • Gable only won two out of 3, NCAA didn't allow true freshman to compete at the time.

  • Gable wrestled like, 120 didn't he? Movin up a bunch of weight classes.

  • Two legendary and great American wrestler but the fact is Gable is not the only wrestler from any country not to be scored upon in winning the Olympics. Osamu Watanabe from Japan won the Olympics in wrestling in 1964 and went 186-0 in his career he also won 2 world wrestling titles. But check this out the guy was never scored upon in 186 matches!! No one has ever come close to topping that but it was so long ago and he was not from the US so not many people remember him but he was untouchable.

  • Who is the idiot from Iowa below "hawkirock" below that says Kemp sucks as an announcer? You are an idiot...Lee Kemp is one of the best announcers and the sport needs more guys like Lee.

Kemp is one of the top 4-5 wrestlers in US history, and were it not for 1980 political action of Jimmy Carter, we would be talking about Lee Kemp even in higher praise. You don't win 3 World Titles if you suck. Had he not been ref jobbed against an Iowa wrestler his Freshman year, he was a legit 4x NCAA champ.

  • Love Gable, but people need to get facts straight. Gable won 2 NCAA titles, not 3. Lee Kemp did beat him in 1975 in the freestyle tourney shown above. He had a handful of freestyle losses, compared to his single loss in folkstyle to Larry Owings. Finally, Osamu Watanabe also won Olympic gold without surrendering a point.

  • Apparently YouTube doesn't let you post links in the comments section, but all of the above is easily verifiable through Google.

  • Didn't Gable wrestle at a lower weight class?

  • My coach's name is Les Kempf, that's pretty funny.

  • Kemp is a good wrestler but he sucks as an announcer. He needs to go back to coaching because he is brutal to listen to.

  • Grainy but good.

  • sorry dan gable because you lost.

  • I thought Bobby Weaver came close to not surrendering a point in the Olympics in 1984.

  • "sometimes the best wrestler doesnt win. dan gable is a way beter wrestler than me: lee kemp. he is probably my favorite motavator! and has changed my life. thank you Lee

  • Its an open tourney. That means anyone can enter regardless of age. Even though usually only the college wrestlers do so, you will see a few out of college guys that are student asst. coaches finishing degrees or just trying to stay in shape while competing for a spot on the national teams in freestyle or greco-roman wrestling.

  • Wow, Gable's legs look so skinny in this vid.

  • This was an expedition match. After Dan gable's carrier in collage and olympics. Dan Gable was in his thirties.

  • #LOL

  • Actually, Dan Gable only won 2 National Championships. Back in the day Iowa wrestling didn't allow freshman to wrestle varsity. It was a fact taht i just learned recently. Dan Gable was still the man though.

  • @soldier09034 no he was a three time national champ he said it himself

  • i had the privilage of being coached by lee kemp before he became a coach for the 2008 olympic games and hes a great man i have nothing negative to say about him and yes he did beat dan gable and yes he was a three time ncaa champ and also a 3 time world champ he was on the 1980 olympic team but wasnt able to wrestle because we boycotted the event. the previous year he had beaten the gold and silver medalist dont disgrace this legend with negative comments

  • Not everyone in the world who's named Dan and wrestles is Dan Gable...just thought I'd throw that out there

  • Is Kemp a negro feller?

  • Comment removed

  • Gable only lost one match, in college to larry owens.

  • To u guys on here sayin Lee Kemp didnt beat Gable, well im sorry but he did. Even the commentators on another video mention that (1976 NCAA Final Kemp vs Brown ABC Coverage). The Commentator says it @00:47

  • @zk92000 this video isnt from 1976 and another thing if they did wrestle gable was already coaching by then he wasnt even in school anymore and gable during highschool and college lost only 1 match his very last one against larry owings.

  • you guys saying he lost to lee kemp when he didnt look it up,im pretty sure id know who lee kemp is if he beat gable which he didnt, you guys saying kemp beat him probably dont even wrestle or if you do,your a fucking fish nd suck

  • Comment removed

  • kemp went to the olympics too bro, you need to do your homework, im 19 and i know hes a legend

  • lee kemp goes to my school all the time hes the man. hes a genius

  • know wonder your just a punk kid who never wrestled has not done nothin with his life other then try to look smart by throwing out littel facts but the thing is is learn what your talkin about

  • You're such a dumb ass. Why don't you try using a dictionary or spell checker. Yes I wrestled and yes I passed English. Kemp beat Gable in 1976. I never said it was while Gable was in college.

  • dan did not loose a match in high school and the only match he lost in college was his very last match at the ncaa finals on saturday march 28 1970 to larry owings of washington college read it slow piss ant so maybe youll understand it

  • he actually lost to leeroy kemp as well.

  • Gable and Kemp are so above anyone wrestling now it's not even funny. Dan was relentless and was very difficult to score on and Lee could score when ever he needed to and was near impossible to score on. I know every one thinks their generation was the best and I must admit that the generation of wrestlers right after Gable & Kemp was better, but none even compare today! Sorry, but it's just the facts. Look at the internationals results.

  • look up his record and there is no one by the name lee kemp and threw high school and his ncaa career he had a 118-1 record larry owings beat him in his last match

  • As an 18-year-old sophomore, he earned national recognition by defeating legendary Dan Gable and went on to win three straight NCAA Championships at 158 pounds, while compiling an impressive record of 108-0-1. Kemp concluded his career as a Badger with a final mark of 143-6-1, including a streak of 87 straight victories and an unbeaten string of 103 consecutive matches. That streak is fourth-best in NCAA history along with his winning percentage of .953.

  • Seriously you're calling people morons when you don't even know to use the word through. Who's the real moron here! Maybe you should think before you start typing.

  • look up gables record he never wrestled anyone by that name and the pathitic thing is you belive every thing you see and another thing did you ever wrestle im guessin you didnt

  • Actually Lee Kemp did beat Gable. Didn't you watch the video?

  • look it up u morons he didnt even wrestle a guy by that name lol what morons

  • Watch the video!!! Looks like he wrestled Kemp and Kemp won!!! What more do you want? It's OK if you're from Iowa. It's OK to admit you're wrong. There is no reason to call people morons when you're clearly wrong!!

  • no he didnt moron the only loss on his record was larry owings the last his school carrerthen he beat qwings in the olypics he had 118-1 record look it up

  • dan only lost one match in his highschool and ncaa carrer and that was against owings read a book people

  • You would think that with today's technology and high definition products out there, the guy who went to this match could have dropped a few bills to purchase a nice COLOR HD handheld cam instead of the cheap outdated cam this guy obviously used. Man, the quaility is killing me man, I can barely tell which wrestler is Kemp and which is Gable.

  • are you stupid they didnt have hd back when this was taken and you cant inporve the quality today with even the most expensive products

  • Cool vid.

  • does anyone know how old gable was here and Kemp. Obviously, Gable was not a 158 pounder in his prime.

  • Lee Kemp would have been 20 and Dan Gable would have been 28.

  • Lee Kemp did win 3 NCAA gold and was 2nd as a freshman in 1975. Was just a splinter away from being the first 4-time NCAA champeen.

  • FREE-STYLE wrestler >>Alexander Medved is a three-time Olympic champion (Tokyo, 1964; Mexico, 1968; Munich, 1972). He is a seven-time world champion, three time European champion, nine-time USSR champion, and three-time winner at the championship of the Soviet Union (1963, 1967, 1971) Gable our most legendary, but debate > greatest wrestler ever > John Smith, Karelin, Medved, Kenny Monday, Bruce Baumgardner, Iowa States coach . 4X ncaa champ, gold medalist, MANY - - -

  • Many people also forget to mention Wade scahlles as one of the greats. He has the gussiness book record with most pins and matches. They named the most pins in college award after him. He is a 4 time National Champ He won both divison 2 and 1 titles in the same years. He is the guy who invented the spladel he is also one of the all time greats with all the others. If you really know wrestling and not only stories from others then you would know him too..

  • that loss inspired him to go out and win world and olympic championships people say sanderson was better but he wasnt gable lost once then went out and won olympic championships then became the most successful wrestling coach in history

  • you cant win them all..a loss is a win in some way. just gotta learn from your mistakes thats what made gable the best^_^

  • lee kemp went to chardon high school in ohio. i go there now :) and imma freshman. he grew up down the street from where i live

  • cool. have you ever met him

  • he came to my school and I met him once

  • i met sam hazwinkel and hiscousin rob at a clinic or howevr you spellhis last name lol

  • ya'll trippin gable be representin iowa and the sport of wrestling and could beat anyones ass that says otherwise. fuck ya'll

  • yea...sure they are

  • @pinkwrapbub u make no sense. dnt be comin on here makin this race-war... especially when ur pretty wrong...

  • Dan Gable was the man who made wrestling what it is. He was the first to go his entire high school carrier withiut a loss and only lost 1 match in college with 3 NCAA championships. Granted there are many wrestlers that have done so after him but he set the bar. The one bar that has still been left to beat is the 72 olympics where he went without a point against him. He is the only wrestler alive to do so in any country so thats what makes him the best....

  • Dan won only 2 NCAA tites; back then freshmen were not allowed to wrestle varsity. Will always be the GOAT; Owings was never the same after beating Dan, had achieved his ultimate goal. Dan later beat him in their rubber match.

  • @tonyjossie

Danny Hodge was a great one too.

  • @tonyjossie Word !

  • @tonyjossie He was NOT the first high school wrestler to never lose a match. Where do they get this shit??????

  • @RBB1965 he said go through high school no losses and also in college lose 1 match with 3 ncaa championships

  • @tonyjossie actually gable only won 2 NCAA championships, and he wasn't the only wrestler that wasn't scored on in the Olympics...

  • @tonyjossie

Well the last statement isn't true, Alexander Karelin wasn't scored against in 92'(I think) or 96'(I'm certain) on the way to his 2nd and 3rd greco roman titles. Still Gable is the f***ing man.

  • Comment removed

  • I meant Medved (Medvedev is the russian president)

  • Karelin was a greco roman wrestler, wheres Gable and Kemp were freestyle wrestlers (two different sports, comparing them makes about as much sense as comparing judo athletes w/ wretlers). Yojiro Uetake and John Smith are are two who deserve consideration when asking who's the best. Other than Medvedev, I don't know many of the russian superstars of freestyle but I know they've had a many.

  • LEE KEMP SIMPLY THE BEST BETTER THAN ALL THE REST MUCH BETTER love this video

  • Gable '72 Olympics, won gold without allowing a point. Kemp 3x NCAA Champ and 4x time finalist. Kemp was a 3x world champ who missed Olympics because of the '80 boycott. This match was in '76, 4 years after Gable quit competing. Gable wrestled this match 2 weight classes above his competitive weight. Kemp was a soph at WI. Kemp must be mentioned in the same sentence as the greatest wrestlers the USA has produced or even the world. Gable, Hodge, Kemp, etc... They were all great.

  • i've met lee kemp he's a pretty cool guy

    his single legs are crazy

  • How big is that mat? It looks tiny.

  • thats so epic that lee kemp is the olympic head coach we are gonna destroy bejiingh

  • kemp is amazing, what are you talking about destroyed?

  • ya this is what broke his record his senior year but still dans better

  • i am training with lee kemp!!!

  • Then you must love the Iron Sheik!

  • and dan's not?

  • this match was 4 years after Dan won the gold medal and he was injured. Lee Kemp is one of the greatest amerrican wrestlers of all time.

  • fgdsg

  • this is even worse than the time he lost to larry owings

  • a kenny monday at his prime would have destroyed dan gable at his prime. that's not me saying that, it's dan gable himself.

  • You're an idiot.

  • Do me a favor... take a real hard look at yourself in the mirror, and then ask youself: "Do I spread good or evil?"

  • Yep, you're an idiot.

  • Hehehe. Agreed.

  • the wrestling room at my school is named after lee kemp

  • Is he affiliated to you high school in any way?

  • yeah he went to school here 2 time state champion our athletic director obsessed with him

  • nvm my bad this was a try out for the 1976 olympics he had a pinched nerv in his neck, not the he ever made excuses. also he became a great coach with a record of 89-4-1 his highschool+collage+coaching combinded for 5 loses. Dan Gable IS WRESTLING.

  • Dan Gable is wrestling, for sure. We have to wonder, as he reflects on his career, whether he wishes he had been more patient and stayed with the Hawkeyes and not the Cyclones.

  • Uh, oh----------reverse that.

  • Was this an off season match or sumthing i was under the impession he was undefeated in highschool with 1 collage loss?

he is believed to be the best because he was undefeated in highshool, with 1 (maybe 2 never heard of it be4 this vid) in collage and went on to wrestle in the olympics. seen his vid he has great work ethic its either him or cael at #1

  • i thought dan gable only lost once. there is another vid of him losing to larry owings.

  • Dan lost one official match in college, to Owings, who he had beaten and later beat again. Owings, after beating Dan in 1970, was a two-time NCAA runner-up.

He seems never to have had the same motivation after beating Superman.

  • Gable only had one loss in college. Gable was out of school when this took place. Kemp was a soph..

  • Karelin and Medved made their careers in Greco. Inch for inch and pound for pound Gable was by far the best America has ever produced. I saw him in college and during his run st the '76 Olympic team. Dan's run through the '72 Olympics certifies him as being on any short list of the greatest ever at any weight.

  • @surfer4christ1 Another person who needs to read some. Medved was a freestyle wrestler.

  • if you compare talented wrestlers career records, title's held, and overall wrestling ability and watched a few more of the greats you'd see Gable wasn't the 'best'...there have been greats and will come even more greats..you need to put a little more into this argument..

  • well think about it when you think of the greats you think of Babe Ruth for example. Of course there has been better. but he was the first greatest he set the example and benchmark for all other wrestlers

  • Great match! Gable later coached Lee Kemp.

  • Heart vs. Raw ability... Thats insulting to both wrestler.

  • look up Dan Gable on wikipedia..see for yourself..DG gave up 0(zer0)points..thats what makes its such an achievement..what's the difference between 1 point and 100?? nothing..he was UNscored upon...rendering anything less uncomparable..

  • to Flancrest1994: and their are other wrestlers since DG both american and soviet that have just as equally impressive tallent as DG with quivallant records..john smith,sandeson,medved,fadzaev,karellen,brands,bellaglazov,schultz..DG wasn't the best..by a long shot

  • Dan Gable is most widely considered the greatest grappler of all time. Allhe others you mentioned fall short of his legend. DG was and is the greatest of all time .

  • only by americans. we think we are the greatest at everything..and as so as we step on the mat with the russians, the story changes..Look up Alexander Medved..he is considerd the greatest of all time..

  • That one point scored on Gable in 1972 when all the soviets wanted to do was beat Gable was scored on him by an ...........American.

  • completely irrelevant..the soviets had tons of wrestlers 10-20 deep for years that the americans couldn't touch..gable simply doesn't have enough wins/titles to compete in dominance category as like Karelin,Belaglazov, smith, Medved..to many tto name really..length of time active plays a part too..

  • Ask 1000 wrestlers who the greatest of all time is and 80% will say Dan Gable.

  • ignorance is bliss...how many actual videos of DG have you seen?? there are only a few in existance. your basing your whole argument on his record, and 4 videos of which 2 are of him loosing..

  • 80? any wrestler who doesnt live in a cave will say Gable

  • Yes, AMERICAN wrestlers will say that -- in terms of statistics, who's better than Osamu Watanabe? 186-0-0 in Olympic competition, with zero points scored on him the whole time.

Karelin would be another counterpoint. Gable was brilliant but saying he's the "greatest ever" is like saying Gale Sayers is better than Barry Sanders. The stats just don't back it.

  • OF ALL TIME?

  • Karelin, Medved, ..too many indeed. But who cares, its about Goodness. Just be good and do good. Look up Takhti.

  • In Gable's final 21 Olympic qualification and Olympic matches, he scored 12 falls and outscored his nine other opponents, 130-1. The single point being scored by Larry Owings, who defeated Gable in his final collegiate match.

He's the best of ALL TIME. PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

  • I also read a story back in around 1987-91ish about Sergei Belaglazov having been undefeated for close to 11 years and giving up less than a handful of points.winning 2 olympic golds 6 world championships.only loosing to John Smith in 1991ish

  • Gable was not way past his prime. Kemp was just that good. Gable lost 5 matches in his career 1 to Kemp 1 to Bobby Douglas during this time. Kemp was just a solid well trained wrestler. No excuses necessary Gable just got beat.

  • @kdoug9564 HE WAS WAY PAST HIS PRIME HERE. Do some research. Almost 4 years after his gold, injuries mounting up, etc.

  • Does anyone realize that Gable won the '74 Olympics without allowing 1 point to be scored on him. That's f***ing sick! I had the privilege of wrestling at one of Gable's camps. He's one intense mofo but super cool. I'll never forget how much I learned from him.

  • 72'olympics

  • @rickdt1 I didn't since there were no Olympics in 1974!!

  • This match was much dicussed at the time and did not shock too many people because:...

Gable had serious injuries during workouts...Gable was not in good cardio shape and was wrestling up two weight classes. Still, Kemp was already a great wrestler and he is one of my favorites.

  • I totally agree.. wrestling takes complete mental discipline not just to train but to mentally prepare..he was done as far as an bieng an athlete. he was out of shape compared to 72'..and once you pass your prime in this sport its hard to come back..

  • you all are soo dumb. gable was 182-1. his only loss came to Larry Owings. thats all that matters!

  • Stop hating fool

  • for somebody who has access to the internet you sure don't have a clue..look it up..

  • Gable was way past his prime during this match. This took place in the fall of 76'..Kemp was a sophmore in college...I'll correct my previous post..Gables alltime record was 299-06-03..97% winning record..not bad!!

  • Yea not bad? More like freakin amazing... in 308 matches he only loses 6 times. Id like to see you try doing that. And Gable wasn't really past his prime... just cuz he is out of college doesnt mean anything.

  • Cael Sanderson had a better record..and he was past his prime.. He was retired for 4 years at that point..his head was not in it as far as his own personal competition..he was more in coaching mode.. and actually I had a 92% winning record in college, HS and USMC

  • Congrats on the 92% but did he wrestle in 308 matches? Idk and honestly i dont care. Dan Gable is arguably the best wrestler ever to walk on a mat. He ripped through the '74 olympics without allowing one point on him. Ive watched a few videos of him wrestling and I really dont think anyone is better than him. I too am a wrestler... not a very good one but I know how hard it is to go out there and give it your all for 6 minutes. This guy did it for a lot longer than that.

  • I am gonna stop you right there..1st of DG wrestled in the 72' games not 74.. I doubt you've seen more vids of DG than are post on utube as they are rare. ..and the ones that are available are less than flattering of his talent..more to come

  • Srry bout that I meant the '72 olympics and yea I've seen more vids of DG just not lately... During the season I watch them to see what moves I can improve on. But either way he ripped through the '72 olympics with allowing one point on him and it was by Larry Owings. Unfortunately the video that we were commenting on is quite unflattering as you were saying. Either way Dan was probably the best wrestler to step foot on a mat, that is in my opinion.

  • I dissagree on who's the best but it's neither hear nor there..I am just much older and have seen 40+years of the sport..gable actually didn't allow any points in 72..that's what makes it so significant..and almost impossible to repeat..brush up on yer DG history..

  • Lol sorry dude your wrong... if you read any bigoraphies on google bout DG read bout the 72 olympics... he allowed one point. And either way allowing 10 points in all of the olympics would be almost impossible to repeat. And yea I know that there are other wrestlers but in Gable's time... did they ever beat him? NO! The soviets tried and tried to find someone better than him and they never did. And Sanderson was in a different time period than Gable so we would never know who is better.

  • Wow! What a finish.

cropac101: This was probably an off-season free style tournament. I bet after Gable graduated. Kemp is probably a Junior or so? Gable lost a few more matches early after college when he started wrestling free style international competition.

  • wow i cant belive that so did an only lose 2

  • he lost 6 or 7

  • the crowd was really into this on..

  • Kemp never wresltied in the Olympics. The boycott of 1980 probably cost him the Gold Medal. He was beaten by Dave Schultz in the Olympic Trials in 1984.

  • Heart versus Raw Ability. Kemp Silver Medalist @ Montreal?
