What are those two black... things under and between David's middle and neck pickups?

It looks like David's Strat might have been customized at some point. It looks like those holes in the pickguard where a couple slide switches (like you find on the Fender Mustang) might have been installed, but it looks like they had been removed by the time this video was made.

I think David had the guitar refinished, because I'm sure I've seen a photo of him playing a brown Strat with those switches in place, so he may have had them removed at the same time the guitar was refinished.
