Do you have many issues with the amount of wrinkles on theses Neo's? I Own Three Neo's and they have a good amount of wrinkles, but to that extent. I hear too much wrinkle can be costly with vet bill causes medical issues.

The wrinkle on the large bitch chasing the ball is far too excessive.... Bred for vanity not type! Not even the Ponzano dogs of the 80s were this wrinkley. I bet this breeder has massive problems with skin/ coat conditions.

@flintrocks the skin on a neo IS supposed to be loose. They originate from ancient war dogs and the thick loose skin actually made it harder to deliver a fatal stab, not to mention the psychological effects of seeing such a giant (and some would say ugly-but not me) beast
@bigmikevt While this is true, but as Douglas Oliff points out in 'The Ultimate Book of Mastiffs': "But I do not think Querci (Mario Querci, owner of the famous Ponzano kennel) would have appreciated some of the excessively over-wrinkled skin and hanging flews whch one sees today in some kennels." That being said, most of these dogs seems to fit the standard. The dog being mentioned was female, and amy have recently given birth which would have something to do with the excessive wrinkles.
@bigmikevt I definitely agree with you! Lets just say it's in my blood. My mother grew up with two Saint Bernards from Schwarzwald Hof kennels, and I grew up with a dog who was a saint bernard mix as well. However, it was not until I saw the film Turner & Hooch that I became fascinated with Mastiff breeds. A former neighbor of mine adopted the regular Mastiffs, and occasionally would have a Dogue de Bordeaux, but my heart has been taken by these beautiful Neapolitan Mastiffs =)

I do love my little Pomeranian (he's an amazing nose cleaner) but once we move out of here and get a place with a yard, we're going big. These dogs need very exprienced dog handlers. I would have the ears cropped to stop ear infections and tails docked to stop them whacking into things.

But if I couldn't trust my dog at all around even just myself, I would be worried I'd done something wrong in raising him. You MUST be the alpha with all dogs, even more so when they are large or naturally dominant or highly intelligent dogs.
@TheRuffianCrash Cropping a dogs ears hurts them as badly as my circumcision hurt me. (note sarcasm) Instead of jumping on people for cropping THEIR dogs ears or tails, which by the way is done before the dogs eyes are open, maybe you should worry about the people who don't house or feed their dogs properly. The cropping(btw) is done between 9-12 weeks, and i can assure you they are aware of he pain. As for 'done before the dogs eyes are open', perhaps you are implying the copping is performed when they are newly born, if so this statement is false. Perhaps you comfort yourself and try to 'cover your tracks' by pointing out the faults of others(animals abuse/neglect)

Too much wrinkle in my opinion. My pup is 3 months and is NO WHERE close to being that wrinkly. I like her better that way. Less chances of issues in the future.

i breed cane corsos and this dog couldnt hold a torch to them in my opionion but as a newly recognized breeder my brother loves this breed i personally love my main sire vito a cane corso but i might get one of these theyre just too big in terms of children the corso is much better
Where owners only care about the look and can't afford or have the time/space to keep this wonderful breed! The dog suffer's in the end, and a family that could have homed him/her with no problems, would have missed out, but mostly the dog.
I ahve to say after owning 2 over 13 years, they are absolutly the BEST breed. I mean they are soo inteliigent, so protective, so docile. I now have a neice and nephew, and my boy (4 in August) is a dream with them. Obviously not in the room alone with them. The up keep on 1 is not that great as ppl would assume! I'm sooo pleased that I have had the pleasure to home a wonderfull breed! Please anyone thinking of owning them, please please read up on the breed, too many go to home's.
The Neo isnt a dog for the inexperienced. They can be very protective of their property and owner but with the proper training can be a wonderful pet. I wouldnt allow my Neo in the same room with a child without being on a lead and your sister allowed her Baby in a room with 3 Neos??? That poor child will carry her scars ( outside and inside) for the rest of her life just because of her mothers neglect. Hopefully charges were brought against your sister for child abuse!
i've NEVER seen these kinds of dogs before!!! I've been dogsitting two english mastiffs for 5 years, so I'm familiar with the mastiff breed but never have I seen some like these...very interesting and beautiful!!!

I am sorry for what happened to your niece, but you can't just place all neapolitan's as "lethal as rottweilers", especially since rottweilers are great dogs too. You can't 100% trust any animal with small children, and when you have 3 extra large breed dogs around a 4 year old toddler, the chances higher for a mishap. I hope the 4 year old girl will recover from this incident, but again, these dogs are great family dogs, but every once in awhile, something like this can happen unfortunately.

my sister had 3 Neapolitan mastiffs & the three attacked her 4 year old daughter leaving her with 3 fractures in the head, multiple bites on her legs, arms & torso & she needed a 10 hour operation on her head. These dogs when it comes to children are as lethal as rottweilers as they turned on a 4 year old child & left her within an inch of losing her life as the extent of her injuries were bad. The child needed plastic surgery & had nerve damage to her face that couldnt be repaired.
I have owned and bred Neapolitan Mastiffs for over 15 years. My first female saved my 2 children from a house fire. They were sleeping upstairs, I was out hanging laundry. She woke up my daughter, took her sleeve and led her into the baby's room so she could grab her brother. She then guided them through the smoke outside to safety. I trusted my dogs explicitly with my children. I am sorry for what happened! Please do not condemn an entire breed. Training & breeding may have well been a factor !

Jasonp540, I had a 170lbs male Neo that absolutely run. Thats the best part about this breed, they dont look athletic but for their size they are very agile. They are also unsurpassed as a guard dog, mine was very protective with no training. And Jason, if u ever come across a neo were u r not suppose to be the question will be if u can run ; )!

As for the advice you blindly accept from vets, COMICAL. Vets are medical doctors, not behavioralists. The average vet couldn't put a basic obedience title on your Cocker Spaniels. Further, the training of which you so unknowingly speak reveals the weak-nerved specimens of the breed, when they demonstrate to EXPERIENCED (UNLIKE YOU) trainers that they are not suited to such work. The reality is, the disservice is done to the breed by those who DON'T train & test.

I fell in love with these dogs years ago before the A.K.A. accepeted them. All I have 2 say 2 the "HATERS" is do your research B-4 U open your mouth. This 1 of the purist breed of dog. It dates back before Christ and it's still among us today. This dog is living history! There is a book by Sherilyn Allen VMD. Read it and learn that the Neo's in the video are exellent true 2 breed specimens. They r beautiful in every way.

How do you think they do in prey as opposed to defense? How would you describe their general tendencies when engaged in bitework? Can they typically handle a lot of pressure from a decoy, or do they show avoidance when pressed? What kind of recovery period is typical of the breed when in drive compared to say, a Malinois?
My experience shows Neos have a bad tendency to readjust when on the bite. What do U think of that, & what's your solution? How have U found their focus on the sleeve? Have U had problems w/ fanging? I see it as very common, & another product of show breeding. What's your little VET book say about those show breeder created problems?? Come on Superstar, impress me. No. They didn't even look like that 100 years ago, let alone 1,000. The modern show Neo is not athletic and he should be - he's a worker NOT a show pony!
actually they hardly ever changed appearance. and Neos arent very athletic. they only have short burst of energy for certain thing (chasing down an intruder for example.)
Seeing Neos like this makes me sad. Ear cropping may be traditional, but it's outdated & barbaric. I consider Neos like this over-bred; too cumbersome and wrinkly by far. I've no doubt a bunch of US breeders will dump on this posting, but what makes a good Neo for me is power + grace. My Neo is tall (31 inchs), strong, with FULL ears and the loose skin confined to head and neck. His defined body amplifies the swinging cat-like gait. I'd hate to see Neos go the way of English bulldogs.

I have a Female Bully 7 months old right now, and my next one will be a Neo. i love the size, the power, and most of all the wrinkles. Neos are by far the best of looking you get in the Mastiff breed. Awesome video, and superb bloodline. Easily a 2.5-3k dog right here. Hopefully after my wedding in aug i can get one.

If you do not know where to get these kinds of dogs, know a breeder well enough to get something great and have the kind of money it takes to buy one then you won't ever know all these dogs can truly be...

I have a Neo. She's just over 2 years old. She's about 130lbs, and i run her everyday...its not fat. She is crazy strong...not as large as the bigger ones in the video so i dont imagine as strong...but I dont win tug-o-war, but I usually end up with a sore shoulder/elbow and some fresh grass stains on my jeans. I have 2 other dogs so i am at the legal limit in my area, but I will get another for sure one day.
And drive beyond what the best Filas can muster up. Combine that with movement and speed which is downright staggering then you know what I am talking about here. When my beloved Gabriel would play with the neighbors 110 Rottie not only was the Rottie hopelessly overpowered of course but Gabriel could also out move him. The one thing the smaller dog had on Gabriel was endurance. But the kind of damage Gabriel would have inflicted on an intruder in 20 minutes is what Rottie couldn't do in a week.

If there were only 2 kinds of Mastini meaning Dogs like Dante or on the other hand big wrinkly dullards I would choose Dante without a doubt. But... You have to understand that where most dogs should resemble an athlete, the Mastino should represent a powerlifter. Not ripped and vascular but massive and thick. These kind of dogs are extremely rare and VERY hard to produce but this is what the Mastino MUST be if we want him to be all he can be. I wish breeders of thin, leggy dogs would admit that they are going this route because this is the best they can do with what little they have. The Mastino is a dog like none other and must remain absolutely massive, hugely boned and retain the drive of a warrior. If you sacrafice ANY of these traits you get a healthy dog but you do not have a true MASTINO.
Agreed. The balancing act that can result from focusing on BOTH form & temperement is diffficult to walk. However, any breeding should be undertaken with the goal of producing offspring with qualities that surpass those of both parents. Your mentioning the difficulty is true. However, how many breeders, regardless of breed, really strive towards that goal? How often do I meet a dog owner w/ a nice LOOKING dog & the first thing out of their mouth is how they want to breed? Silliness.
I could not agree more... Too many wanna be breeders and not enough knowledge have ruined hundreds of breeds... I am afraid the Mastino will go that way as well... At least in the US thanks to the AKC.
Unfortunately most breeders who do not have the knowledge, resources to get great stock to begin with will go the route of narrow, leggy dogs without ever admitting that this method of producing healthy dogs is a short cut with undesirable results. There are breeders who produce 200 pound, massive, functional, healthy dogs with tons of drive. THIS is what the Mastino should be. Anything less is a Cane Corso and should be called by that name.
I do have to say that I agree with just about everything goldtop is saying about the AKC and the current state of the Neapolitan Mastiff. The AKC has ruined EVERY single breed they took under their wing and the Neo will be no exception. When we look at the English Mastiff we can see the sad future the Neo is looking forward to. Do we need yet another big and friendly cow that will show an intruder around the house instead of protecting it? Having said all that here is some other things to ponder
One thing I have noticed that most people think the only kind of Neo that is healthy is a thin, leggy and athletic one which is simply not true... Breeding more narrow and leggier dogs is the easy way out as far as producing healthy dogs. A great breeder can and will produce thick, massive hugely boned dogs that are functional as well. Breedign leggy, narrow dogs is the poor man's solution for this problem.
Here's a quick solution. There's an Australian breeder producing great dogs, like Steeltrap. Google search ABCALERT NEOPOLITANS and you'll find their page. Read HISTORY OF MODERN NEOS. You'll see all you need to know. I'll await your response. But somehow I suspect that once you check their page, you won't be posting on this thread again as clearly you're a dude who can't handle being PROVEN wrong.

They'll wreck U in a heartbeat.
As far as your "research," as I said b4, log on2 Bandog Banter and post some questions about AKC bred Neos. You'll get the facts from numerous trainers, breeders. Ask them to compare the state of modern Neos, and what AKC acceptance has done to the working ability, appearance and original form & function of this breed. You'll get quite an honest assessment of the decline of Neos that has occurred in the past 40 yrs. Don't take my word for it...Ask those involved in the breed who know.
Here's a quick solution. There's an Australian breeder producing great dogs, like Steeltrap. Google search ABCALERT NEOPOLITANS and you'll find their page. Read HISTORY OF MODERN NEOS. You'll see all you need to know. I'll await your response. But somehow I suspect that once you check their page, you won't be posting on this thread again as clearly you're a dude who can't handle being PROVEN wrong.

Here's my basic argument. Let's see if U can follow. The quotes U found were correct, to a degree. The original Neos were used in gladiator combat. Up until about 40 years ago, U could still easily find those types of Neos. Then people started breeding them only for looks, not for their gladiator hearts, as most people couldn't handle a real Neo. These wrinkly dogs w/ bad hips & breathing problems became the standard. The modern Neos are garbage, w/ the standard set by AKC clowns.
These dogs are typically so weak, unhealthy, & non-functional. The modern Neos couldn't hold a candle to the old-school badboys, who would run circles around them, & toss them around like rag dolls. Roger @ SteelTrap breeds old-school Neos. He doesn't breed for wrinkles. His dogs would be scorned by AKC people. The wrinkle on the large bitch chasing the ball is far too excessive.... Bred for vanity not type! Not even the Ponzano dogs of the 80s were this wrinkley. I bet this breeder has massive problems with skin/ coat conditions.
If this breeder could tighten up the skin on his dogs then I ( IMHO ) would say he'd have a much better type..... All that said , truly beautiful Neos. Excellent litter at the end.Compliments from the UK, Liverpool !!!

@bigmikevt While this is true, but as Douglas Oliff points out in 'The Ultimate Book of Mastiffs': "But I do not think Querci (Mario Querci, owner of the famous Ponzano kennel) would have appreciated some of the excessively over-wrinkled skin and hanging flews whch one sees today in some kennels." That being said, most of these dogs seems to fit the standard. The dog being mentioned was female, and amy have recently given birth which would have something to do with the excessive wrinkles.

My mother grew up with two Saint Bernards from Schwarzwald Hof kennels, and I grew up with a dog who was a saint bernard mix as well. However, it was not until I saw the film Turner & Hooch that I became fascinated with Mastiff breeds. A former neighbor of mine adopted the regular Mastiffs, and occasionally would have a Dogue de Bordeaux, but my heart has been taken by these beautiful Neapolitan Mastiffs =)

I have a huge yard, But I have lots of stairs in my house, a big dog would hate that. Sometimes bigger isn't tougher or better for you. i have an 80 pound dog that knows how to use his weight, can jog/hike for long periods. I know Im ranting but good luck in your dog search. PS Take as many dog tests as you can, you may get a breed that you never thought of.

@MsTrance1 dont get one of these as they need an experienced dog owner. get yourself something more common, that are easy to look after, that dont need much grooming and wont cost hundreds in food and vet insurance a month!!! something smaller then this aswell as they are HUGE! lots and lots of work.
maybe a german sheppard, or staff would make a good dog for a first timer.

there are so many breeds out there that are great family dogs, mastiffs are brilliant family dogs but if its ur first one, i wouldnt consider it .

But if I couldn't trust my dog at all around even just myself, I would be worried I'd done something wrong in raising him. You MUST be the alpha with all dogs, even more so when they are large or naturally dominant or highly intelligent dogs.

I ahve to say after owning 2 over 13 years, they are absolutly the BEST breed. I mean they are soo inteliigent, so protective, so docile. I now have a neice and nephew, and my boy (4 in August) is a dream with them. Obviously not in the room alone with them. The up keep on 1 is not that great as ppl would assume! I'm sooo pleased that I have had the pleasure to home a wonderfull breed! Please anyone thinking of owning them, please please read up on the breed, too many go to home's.

The Neo isnt a dog for the inexperienced. They can be very protective of their property and owner but with the proper training can be a wonderful pet. I wouldnt allow my Neo in the same room with a child without being on a lead and your sister allowed her Baby in a room with 3 Neos??? That poor child will carry her scars ( outside and inside) for the rest of her life just because of her mothers neglect. Hopefully charges were brought against your sister for child abuse!

I am sorry for what happened to your niece, but you can't just place all neapolitan's as "lethal as rottweilers", especially since rottweilers are great dogs too. You can't 100% trust any animal with small children, and when you have 3 extra large breed dogs around a 4 year old toddler, the chances higher for a mishap. I hope the 4 year old girl will recover from this incident, but again, these dogs are great family dogs, but every once in awhile, something like this can happen unfortunately.

my sister had 3 Neapolitan mastiffs & the three attacked her 4 year old daughter leaving her with 3 fractures in the head, multiple bites on her legs, arms & torso & she needed a 10 hour operation on her head. These dogs when it comes to children are as lethal as rottweilers as they turned on a 4 year old child & left her within an inch of losing her life as the extent of her injuries were bad. The child needed plastic surgery & had nerve damage to her face that couldnt be repaired.

I have owned and bred Neapolitan Mastiffs for over 15 years. My first female saved my 2 children from a house fire. They were sleeping upstairs, I was out hanging laundry. She woke up my daughter, took her sleeve and led her into the baby's room so she could grab her brother. She then guided them through the smoke outside to safety. I trusted my dogs explicitly with my children. I am sorry for what happened! Please do not condemn an entire breed. Training & breeding may have well been a factor !

Jasonp540, I had a 170lbs male Neo that absolutely run. Thats the best part about this breed, they dont look athletic but for their size they are very agile. They are also unsurpassed as a guard dog, mine was very protective with no training. And Jason, if u ever come across a neo were u r not suppose to be the question will be if u can run ; )!

As for the advice you blindly accept from vets, COMICAL. Vets are medical doctors, not behavioralists. The average vet couldn't put a basic obedience title on your Cocker Spaniels. Further, the training of which you so unknowingly speak reveals the weak-nerved specimens of the breed, when they demonstrate to EXPERIENCED (UNLIKE YOU) trainers that they are not suited to such work. The reality is, the disservice is done to the breed by those who DON'T train & test.

I fell in love with these dogs years ago before the A.K.A. accepeted them. All I have 2 say 2 the "HATERS" is do your research B-4 U open your mouth. This 1 of the purist breed of dog. It dates back before Christ and it's still among us today. This dog is living history! There is a book by Sherilyn Allen VMD. Read it and learn that the Neo's in the video are exellent true 2 breed specimens. They r beautiful in every way.

Seeing Neos like this makes me sad. Ear cropping may be traditional, but it's outdated & barbaric. I consider Neos like this over-bred; too cumbersome and wrinkly by far. I've no doubt a bunch of US breeders will dump on this posting, but what makes a good Neo for me is power + grace. My Neo is tall (31 inchs), strong, with FULL ears and the loose skin confined to head and neck. His defined body amplifies the swinging cat-like gait. I'd hate to see Neos go the way of English bulldogs.

I have a Female Bully 7 months old right now, and my next one will be a Neo. i love the size, the power, and most of all the wrinkles. Neos are by far the best of looking you get in the Mastiff breed. Awesome video, and superb bloodline. Easily a 2.5-3k dog right here. Hopefully after my wedding in aug i can get one.

Pulling my car out of a ditch when I was stuck... Un-earthing and dragging back a small tree when he could not find the giant stick I through into the forrest for him to retreive and so on... I have a Neo. She's just over 2 years old. She's about 130lbs, and i run her everyday...its not fat. She is crazy strong...not as large as the bigger ones in the video so i dont imagine as strong...but I dont win tug-o-war, but I usually end up with a sore shoulder/elbow and some fresh grass stains on my jeans. I have 2 other dogs so i am at the legal limit in my area, but I will get another for sure one day.

And drive beyond what the best Filas can muster up. Combine that with movement and speed which is downright staggering then you know what I am talking about here. When my beloved Gabriel would play with the neighbors 110 Rottie not only was the Rottie hopelessly overpowered of course but Gabriel could also out move him. The one thing the smaller dog had on Gabriel was endurance. But the kind of damage Gabriel would have inflicted on an intruder in 20 minutes is what Rottie couldn't do in a week.

very best. I have to say it yet again... These dogs do not have the mass that makes a Mastino the ultimate powerhouse of a dog. You have to understand that where most dogs should resemble an athlete, the Mastino should represent a powerlifter. Not ripped and vascular but massive and thick. Only this body type can produce the kind of strength power lifters have. I still agree with most of what you said but Steel Trap's dogs I would not pay a dollar for. Sorry.

These kind of dogs are extremely rare and VERY hard to produce but this is what the Mastino MUST be if we want him to be all he can be. I wish breeders of thin, leggy dogs would admit that they are going this route because this is the best they can do with what little they have. The Mastino is a dog like none other and must remain absolutely massive, hugely boned and retain the drive of a warrior. If you sacrafice ANY of these traits you get a healthy dog but you do not have a true MASTINO.

Unfortunately most breeders who do not have the knowledge, resources to get great stock to begin with will go the route of narrow, leggy dogs without ever admitting that this method of producing healthy dogs is a short cut with undesirable results. There are breeders who produce 200 pound, massive, functional, healthy dogs with tons of drive. THIS is what the Mastino should be. Anything less is a Cane Corso and should be called by that name.

I do have to say that I agree with just about everything goldtop is saying about the AKC and the current state of the Neapolitan Mastiff. The AKC has ruined EVERY single breed they took under their wing and the Neo will be no exception. When we look at the English Mastiff we can see the sad future the Neo is looking forward to. One thing I have noticed that most people think the only kind of Neo that is healthy is a thin, leggy and athletic one which is simply not true... Breeding more narrow and leggier dogs is the easy way out as far as producing healthy dogs. A great breeder can and will produce thick, massive hugely boned dogs that are functional as well. Breedign leggy, narrow dogs is the poor man's solution for this problem.

That's why Steel Trap's dogs don't resemble, nor adhere to, these ridiculous "standards." Keeping that in mind, it's got nothing to do w/ "what I like" in a Neo, as U state. It's got everything to do w/ what's the better dog. Look at the typical Neo in these vids...Too much skin, cherry eye, short muzzles (leading to poor breathing & heart problems), hip-dysplasia, front feet splayed out to the side like seals, short rear legs (resulting in no explosiveness) etc, etc. Then U see one of Roger's dogs, that weigh 160, but move like a Pit Bull. They'll wreck U in a heartbeat.

Ask them to compare the state of modern Neos, and what AKC acceptance has done to the working ability, appearance and original form & function of this breed. You'll get quite an honest assessment of the decline of Neos that has occurred in the past 40 yrs. Don't take my word for it...Ask those involved in the breed who know.

Here's my basic argument. Let's see if U can follow. The quotes U found were correct, to a degree. The original Neos were used in gladiator combat. Up until about 40 years ago, U could still easily find those types of Neos. Then people started breeding them only for looks, not for their gladiator hearts, as most people couldn't handle a real Neo. These wrinkly dogs w/ bad hips & breathing problems became the standard. The modern Neos are garbage, w/ the standard set by AKC clowns.

i just checked it out too. from what i read about these dogs they wouldnt even be recognized by the akc for the lack of wrinkles and loose skin. those dogs looked terrible. i speak 2 languages myself. english and FUCKIN english.
