  • I like you.

  • Brown the meat in the pressure cooker to retain all the juices and brown bits. Instead of water add 1/2 Beef Stock and 1/2 Dark Beer (Guinness). Then this recipe is perfect.

  • Hi I dont know if you'll see this as its an older video but can someone tell me if u can cook this in a pot or a rice cooker?

  • @somethingillregret I would think so, the only differencs is, just as john says in the video, it will probably take alot longer (several hours) to get fork tender meat.

since you inside a pressure cooker can cook with a higher temperature the beef cooks faster.

hope this was of any help.

  • Wow A Beef Chili cooked through using a pressure cooker I have not tried that yet.

  • It's almost 1 year yet I'm still drooling. Help

  • Just in case anyone's wondering, this recipe really is VERRRRY good. I've made 2 pots of it since watching this video. Throw in some kidney beans and crispy bacon, and when done throw on some shredded cheese and corn chips, best damn chili EVER.

  • I drooled a enough liquid to quench Africa's thirst.

  • Usually there's a pressure valve and a pressure indicator. Modern Pressure Cookers have safety valves.

  • Looks Mexican

    GREAT!!:D

  • The state is also named after the colour, so both are named after the same thing. Just a little trivia :D

  • @sdafsar I've added a cup of coffee to my pot roasts since I learned that trick back in the 70's. Makes a richer gravy but no one can ever figure out the secret ingredient.

Never tried it in my chili , thanks for the suggestion!!!

  • It seems that 5 cows are able to use a computer and visit youtube for recipes..

  • I love how he described the little doodad.

  • what pressure cooker is that?

  • I love this channel! :DDDD

  • going straight to ebay for me a pressure cooker! Thanks!

  • had chili today at lunch :) yummy...

  • As far as I know, that other doo-dad tell you the cooker is at max or peak pressure. My Mom told me that after you're done cooking, run the cooker under cold water just till that deal pops down, then it's safe to open!! RIP Mom!!

  • MrHorse .. definately worth the investment... save time...

  • isit possible to do this without a pressure cooker? I don't have one :(

  • 5 Cows Disliked this video.

  • I HAVE CAYENNE!!!!

  • this made me so hungry

  • Chef John, you will be sad if you disregard this comment,

Adding a bit less than 1 cup of coffee for 2 1/2 pounds of meat will add a pretty unbelievable flavor that doesnt give itself away

    tell me what you think.

  • I love you CHEF!!! ( and I am gay ; )

  • I love you CHEF!!! (But I'm not gay)

  • can i add bean and carrot !?!

  • Another very easy 1 pot pressure cooker meal. Pressure cook 2-3 hot italian sausages from the freezer & 1-2cup of water for 5 minutes. During the cooking time chop 1-2 carrots & 1 onion. Remove sausages to cool. Add veggies & 1/2 tsp ground sage & 1-1.5 cup brown lentils, salt and pepper & the sausages sliced. Pressure cook again for 4-5 minutes until the lentils & veggies are soft. Add additional water to make as soupy as you like. Hearty meal with zero prep done in 15 minutes!

  • I love my pressure cooker. It is my favorite and most used piece of cookware. There arent that many pressure cooker recipes but you can take any of the thousand crock pot recipes and easily adapt for the pressure cooker. I would brown the meat in the pressure cooker, easy 1 pot meal. Im so happy you have a pressure cooker.

  • How do you make gravy?

  • @iluvalima look it up.

  • @iluvalima depends on what kind.

  • could you eat it without rice and beans?

  • could you just brown all the meat and onions in the pressure cooker before putting the rest of the stuff in and the lid on?

  • @Juberoos I bet you can. You can brown the meat and deglaze the pot with the onion and a splash of red wine. Yum!

  • omg i'm hungry right now.......

  • Now I'm hungry dammit

  • This is likely the best chili in the world !! I love how you have never used a pressure cooker but you take to it like you've done it for years.... Thumbs up !!

  • Could i use a different kind of meat instead of beef? would chicken tast good?

  • looks good

  • ummm yummy! me luv chili!

  • iam from india we always make aur food in pressure cooker ....fast cooking and energy saving to....

  • Ooh that looks lovely. I'll have to try it out.

For anyone buying a pressure cooker for the first time - buy a new one with the safety features. The old ones are ok but not really for novices. Read the instruction manual. Do not attempt to open the pressure cooker before the pressure has been released - I usually put my pressure cooker in the sink with cold water and then run the cold tap over it until the value goes down.

  • 1:00...did anyone notice Chef John's voice going all robotic? LOL

  • my mom uses this to make rice!!

  • wow

  • Sry for the misspelled words ^^

  • Whem you can manage to open a preassure cooker while under preassure it will kaboom, because thw sudden evaporation of the liquid. But normaly you need massive force to do that. But never Never try ^^!!!!!

  • nice, i should try too, thank you for this video :)

  • I don't like pressurized cooking. It tends to negate one crucial factor with cooking: Love.

It comes down to be efficient as possible, economical and technical.

My uncle owns an Indonesian restaurant, all is cooked by using pressurized pans and cookig utilities, and you can taste it; something is off...it tastes fairly well, but you are missing something....my two cents, which is an opinion not a fact;)

  • @wallace8us

    it's called the placebo effect.

  • @ZSy264 on the day his restaurant opened and we (my family) have had dinner he told us afterwards how the kitchen works...and we noticed immediately the flat taste of several dishes.

  • Foodwishes has completely expanded my knowledge of food. I had not been living before I found this channel.

  • What do you think about using beef stock instead of water for this recipe?

  • How is this possible?! 15 minutes? Are you a wizard?

  • I slowly moved closer to the screen as the food all comes together haha.

  • now i'm starving ):

  • Is a pressure-cooker worth buying, if you have a steamer or just lots of various pots and pans o.o?

  • @AnthonyTheMr Yes! A pressure cooker is well worth buying for many things. The best part of all is it takes less energy and time to create a nice meal.

  • aww man i need this!

  • some whole cloves of garlic in this and i would be in heaven.

  • it actually quite a lot like gulasch in germany!

  • Gulasch for the win!! :D

  • that little moment at 2:14 was hilarious.

  • I'm pretty sure the 2nd doodad is a safety feature like you said. It's there in case the 1st one malfunctions to prevent an explosion.

  • Thanks! for this pressure cooker recipe, hope you will have more!

  • This reminds me of Alton Browns chilli recipe... but better and with less that can go wrong... he uses too many tortilla chips, too much chipotle pepper and adobo, and as for beer... I know of very few ales that can stand up in a chilli without making it too bitter, he just wasn't specific enough.

I made your neck sauce recipe the other day (with you San Marzano sauce as a base) and it came out absolutely fantastic. Looking forward to trying this out.

You always give me the best ideas, Chef.

  • I love my Pressure Cooker, we cook our Ropa Vieja in it. Thanks for the chili recipe, will def try this one.

  • i'd never have the patience for that. but god i wish there was some sorta instant cooker that could have the results that thing does.

  • Oh wow, I want to grow up to be like Chef John!

  • What happens if I am so hungry for that chili right now that I am drooling on my keyboard. Is this allowed? Does it earn me galaxy points and unicorn fur?

  • 12 HOURS.... ah fuck it

  • interesting video, thank you. i've had beef chili actually cause a pressure cooker effect in my colon after consuming it, but i've never considered using a pressure cooker to prepare it.(@1:45..."tuh-may-tuh". careful...your new york state is showing ;^)

  • make sure the pressure knob is working, or else it could be extremely dangerous!

  • hi chef john i have a request can u make the classic tuna melt

  • Similar binder, add a Tbs. or so of Maseca corn flour and stir. Gives a little more "depth" of flavor, we think. Thanks for your videos! Learn something new with each one.

  • chicken, grease, salt

  • If it contains onion and tomato, it's NOT Chili. Also after dry toasting the spices, you should make a substantial roux (flour and oil) as a base as thickness (without cornstarch!!!) is a major judging point if'n you was to enter it in a contest. Also, did I mention NO onion or tomato?

The spice combination looks excellent, though it's best to add half of the cumin towards the end as it dissipates with cooking! Glad you called it "chili-like". :-)

  • @wdgeo He DID say that it's more of a beef stew recipe. Calm your balls down.

  • we have pressure cooker :D

  • Chipotle may cause blood in the undies . Man I watch too much south park .

  • You want to keep the weight on top of the pressure cooking dancing. That tells you that you're at the correct PSI.

  • Well shoot we had a large chili contest at work yesterday.

  • no, not crock pots, crock pots sux, crock pots are a crock !!!

  • the little knob on the side is the emergency pressure relive, in case the main knop is blocked..so the pot will not explode ..imagine how your kitshen looks after..

  • no beans in the chili?

  • Oh! Crock pot recipes next? :) Please?

  • Awesome Hater proof Vid! =)

  • i know the time!!

  • I LOVE THIS

  • question: why didn't you just brown the beef in the pressure cooker, scoop it out, then sautée the onions n such and add it back? Was it to remove extra fat or ?

  • pressure cooking rocks

  • you always make me hungryy..

  • Hey John,

Great to see the new 'appliance'. Just saw one of these in the supermarket today

and thought "what could I use that for"?

Well, this is the answer, also maybe the answer to my trying to create a 'special' fried chicken recipe where young dis-interested (and underpaid) kids aren't involved in the creation.

  • This is exactly how my mom makes her chili, but she uses a large pot instead of a pressure coocker. I should get her one of these for her birthday.

  • thumbs up if you LOLed the OH YEAHH~~

  • @kaiiiiifung I LOLed @ nobody giving you thumbs up LMAO

  • what's a chili without beans?

  • @hchetal "i served it with rice and beans" he said

  • @hchetal chili w/o beans, is chili. true chili has no beans

  • Pressure COoker ftw~ also..... no Beans??? cant have chili w/o beans =( or corn???? oooooooo beans at the end? aww =( shouldve been in w/ the pot ;D also Can you make a riccotta cheese recipe? cuz i jsut made lasgna and u know how u got lots left over? yah... gonna need to use dat XD

  • @Jeelikeyou, I second that notion!

  • oh man so THAT'S what's in chili!!!

  • its one am.... and im alittle sleepy. so im gonna ask.... did he say "corn chips" or am is it just me? -.-

  • please! it's 1am........really really shouldn't have watched this!! Now im hungry......

  • WOW!!! I will finally buy me one...

  • Maybe I ask what brand you have for pressure cooker?! ANy good recommendations????

  • this is truly amazing! what a time saver! Gotta get myself on one of those!!!

  • now i want to purchase a pressure cooker!

  • way too liquidy for chili

  • @basselope

He clearly said it's more like a beef stew, although it's also kind of like chili, if he called it beef stew someone would say oooooooh thats too spicy for stew.

  • Why do I watch these videos at 11 at night? Torture!!

Really enjoy your videos. I finally followed your directions and actually added my sauce to the pasta instead of putting down a bed of pasta and then pouring the sauce over it. Big difference!!

  • The other button you mentioned that you didn't know its purpose is actually a pressure safety release valve. In case the rocker malfunctions, then after reaching a certain temperature, the safety valve will open up and let the pressure out to avoid the cooker from exploding

  • 15 MINUTES?!!?!??! D: now i want a pressure cooker :P

  • i want that pressure cooker so bad!!! u should see mine ive had it for 5 years and i thought it was good when i bought it but now it leaks water i cant cook my black beans no more lol :(

  • @gothickchik13 buying a new one is not an option?

  • @thirsokewl it is cause mine leaks water and doesnt cook the beans right. i just cant find the right one to buy though.

  • ohhhhh i so want a pressure cooker now. :D btw that chilli looks amazing :D

  • I've learnt.. Eat food while watching Chef John make food... It really helps..

  • Great recipe! G
