As with all old folk songs it's tough to nail it down. I've heard several from Stephen Still to the Empty hats and they're all good, but words aside your angelic voice makes this my favorite. Try traditionalmusic dot co dot uk for one of the most complete lyric listings I've seen.
I've just been checking in to the origins of this song, and according to the folk music website Mudcat, the song dates back to about 1850, and the lyrics that Mudcat reproduce say that the fiddler lost his sight in '56.
Now that's interesting because if the song was written before 1856, then surely the date '56 wouldn't have been used ( unless the writer meant 1756 ( but, artistically, I don't think that makes sense),
Amazing song! New one for me! This one blew me away! I got a soft spot for the blind. This should be in some Indie flick just the way you play it here! You got mad skillz!
mesmerising, it's very evident that you would have been a big name in the sixties. I mean like Joan Baez and the rest. But then your Youtube followers wouldn't have the pleasure of saying "I knew her when"

What year did the fiddler go blind?
So far on Youtube I've heard 46, 56, and now 76!

When you sing, it just sounds the most natural and effortless thing in the world. You're a bird, a nightingale.

I first heard John McCutcheon do this, maybe in the '70's. You do a good job.
