He sings "cavenaries" instead of "catenaries",

"boil" instead of "buoy",

"Womb" instead of "loom",

"Woof" instead of "wharf",

and

"Be hearts larger than a thimble" instead of "touch hearts larger than a thimble."

It bothers me a lot....

I sing this song a lot. I once sang this song sailing overnight with a silver moon beam from astern. Ofcourse, I did Joanna no justice. Now, after hearing this version, I could more easily sing the song the way Colin does. If you like this song and you are a man, Colin's intepretation is the one to emulate.

The point of Meloy covering this song is to pay tribute to Joanna Newsom in general and this song specifically... it's not an attempt to create a better version than hers. It's just *his* way of performing it. Had I not heard a recording of him performing this, I'd never have heard of Joanna Newsom, and *that* would be a shame.

Jesus, I personally love Colin Meloy's voice... Not as much as Joanna's but it's a fantastic guy to have covering it.

What's wrong with you people? I think a lot of Joanna's fans are very snobby when it comes to music.

I don't think it's snobbishness. For one, personally, I've been listening to The Decemberists longer than I have Joanna... but this cover was such a letdown. Joanna's playing AND singing are intricate and subtle and this cover completely misses all the nuances of the original. It doesn't capture any of the spirit of the original, nor does it contribute a unique POV or emotions.

Joanna = nostalgic+sweet+moving+rhythmi­cally interesting

Colin = just a guy singing and strumming by rote (no heart)

Well, Meloy's version is definitely inferior to the original's but that's just to show how good Ms. Newsom is actually is.

Your wording is a bit on the harsh side, but I guess I agree with it.
