I've biked in temps of colder than -20F. Commuting I use a Dutch city bike with a full chain case. The bike as front and rear rack, so I can carry everything I need each day. Of course it get studded tires.. I average around 1,300 miles a winter.
When srping hits and everbody is back on their bikes and I switch to a lighter bike... Biking is toooo easy and everbody is a slow poke.....
Thumbs up, Jacob! It must have been a really tough ride. Did you camp or you spent night in warm shelter? I like to ride in Finland during the winterseason too. I really enjoy the nature there.
i live in moscow. i bought kona dew fs bike on feb 21 and had some trip in 23 feb of 17 km in about -15 C. It wasnt a fun really. I just wanted to test new bike. Now im still waiting untill snow melts.
I think it's great that more people are biking in snow and ice. I am new to it this year and I am having a blast so far (I know winter has only just begun). Just trying to figure out what to wear to keep warm and when to put on the studded tires etc. Any tricks to winter bike clothing? I live in Minneapolis. The biggest issue we have here is traffic. So you have the cold and snow but you also have HEAVY car traffic. I live in the city and commute.
@copperpaint Cayenne pepper in the socks. Just turn it inside out with hand still in sock, sprinkle a moderate amount of Cayenne in the areas that get cold for you. Then turn sock right side out and gingerly put on sock. It's a vaso-dilator in body and out. Works wonders in my opinion. For me, worst is numb/cold feet/toes. I use it trail running too. Problem is you are going to work, so you'll have to wash your feet at work or toes will feel hot all day.
@Hinloopen I'd bet regular. A spiked tire on the trailer would serve no purpose unless you were descending a very steep hill. At -20C he shouldn't really have needed studs on the bike. I've ridden many times in that temperature in Canada. Snow/ice that cold is doable with regular knobbies, which are much faster.

I have decided to use my bicykle through the winter period(I live in the far north of Norway)
So I have decided to try out some recommended winter tyres called SCHWALBE ICE SPIKER, it has 304 spikes on each tyre, and costs roughly 200 dollars for both tyres!
Everything is Norway is expensive as hell...he he,anyway I bought those tyres, and they are highly recommended, All spikes are intact despite aggressive use,and are good for at least a couple more winters.
Don't sweat!

Is that a spiked tyre on your BOB cart? Or regular?

Exactly...too much gear. I ride all winter and it's never too cold. All you have to do is dress right.

I winter-cycle successfully around the city. But that guy has too much gear with him. It's slowing him too much.

I believe he's going up an slight incline that's slow him down so much, though.
