@BraydenDickerson yes, they different - one of them was very influential to other artists, wrote songs that are still revered 30 years later and was half of the one of the greatest songwriting partnerships that ever existed. The other is chris martin.

Coldplay has the number one rated show in the world. and i know ive been there to see it. the musicality of chris alone is better than john lennon ever was. yes he is a classic and highly held as one the most talented musicians of all time. but chris is in his prime now, and one day coldplay will be held up on the same pedistule as the beetles. its to different eras entirely.

@BraydenDickerson does being popular making something good? Hitler was popular. Tabloid newspapers are popular. The spice girls were popular. What matters in terms of influence is whether legions of subsequent artists cite you as important. Coldplay have not had that. They may get it in the future, but I doubt it because they have been criticised even now by many critics. Lennon, Dylan, etc 40 years ago have hugely influenced many, many artists, including Coldpay.

My point was that influence is developed over time. theres always good and bad critics out there but for the time being coldplay is the dominant act in music today. one day people will look back at them just as we look back at Dylan and Lennon today.

@BraydenDickerson The reason is that Dylan has had an enormous impact on music over 50 years. Legions of musicans from the beatles, neil young, hendrix, clapton etc through to modern day artists and documentary/film makers (e.g. Scorcese) hail him as a massively important figure in C20 culture. His poetry/songs changed how the pop song could be used to say something other than the banal. This hugely influenced every "serious" artist since, including Coldplay themselves.

I would question whether Coldplay are "dominant" - in sales, yes, but they have had poor critical reviews, e.g. search for the New York Times' review of their work, which the band admitted was fair criticism (e.g. poor lyrics, bloated, unoriginal songs, copying U2 etc). Coldplay are talented, but have done nothing original or hugely infuential apart from sell a fair few records - like a lot of bands.

This was good. I've been listening to beatles since 1967. I also listen to coldplay;"fix you" is a great song, a positive song which can't hurt these days. This "beatles are better than coldplay" or no "coldplay is better..." is bullshit.
