Flipo con esta canción, cuando la escucho me creo que soy un vaquero del sur de los Estados Unidos, con mis botas, mi sombrero, los tejanos...vamos me transporta, me encanta el rock sureño.
A note for everyone referring to this as a Leadbelly cover... lyrics contained in Midnight Special were first published in 1905. The song itself was recorded three times commercially before Ledbetter got ahold of it. "Pistol Pete" Cutrell - 1926, Sam Collins - 1927, and Otto Gray and the Oklahoma Cowboys - 1929. Ledbetter did not record the song until 1934. All respect to Leadbelly, but this song is no more his than it is CCR's.
Only group i ever saw that was actually better live than on their records.. Although i might have been influenced by everything that was being passed around..
CCR was the best.....wholesome music....to this day John is still jamming!!!! I remember listening to his music in the late 1960's....and it wasn't the heavy metal crap.....Rock on!!!!!
this is about a train that use to run buy a prison down in texas witch they just closed they called the train the midnight special the folk lore was that if it shined its light on u yer were to be let free not that u all might give a shit but i thought i share my knowledge
@Zavrick6969 Re ccr - my all time best ever fave band who defined what rock should be. Appreciate the story, I'd never heard it. Thanks for the effort.
@Zavrick6969 I have always heard it was about a woman who brought a knife inside a cake for her husband in prison, which they called the midnight special.
@bloxoms You are dead wrong : This song came from the South not California . The lyrics clearly state "If you're ever in Huston" and one of the earliest recordings of the song was made at Angola Prison in Louisiana that housed Huddy Ledbetter BKA Ledbelly . He performed the song with the added lyrics about Huston / Sugar Land jailbreak . Alan Lomax recorded it for the US Library of Congress yet it turned out the song had been recorded before, albeit with slightly different words.
@Geepsterr Finally, someone has got it right!! ...and Angola with the corrupt New Orleans Police Department..."Next thing you know, you're prison bound..." Thank you for straightening all of this out, I hope, for so many!!!!
@MultiKZB Welcome ! I've been researching the song as I recently recorded this on guitar for a certain upcoming singing starlet, albeit with U vibe instead of Trem & in the key of Gb major. She digs Fogerty. It seems there is written version back to 1905 so presumably public domain, as in no royalties due. BTW In addition to corruption Louisiana has a legal system based differently than any other in the nation, upholding French court rulings rather than English.
@Geepsterr Wish I could comment on the music specifics...but I ended up as a Department Chair in Theatre Arts at the University of San Diego...seriously considering relocating to New Orleans after all of these years...and you are right, Louisiana is unique in many respects, bayou, music, food, legal system, etc., etc. Always amazes me how Fogerty could be from California and yet sound Cajun!
@MultiKZB Heh I agree in large part , but case in point Buck Owens is from California too and he could sound pretty darn hick . Then there is Dwight Yoakum from same town of Bakersfield Ca..almost like an in tune Hank Sr. Bear in mind a parrot can fool you into thinking you are hearing a 78 record of Caruso, surface scratches and all . Part talent , part immersion .
@Geepsterr I have always wondered what it was about Bakersfield...maybe the heat!! Nevertheless, I will always enjoy John Fogerty...I think one of the best videos on Youtube is with Sidney Simien and Fogerty singing Sidney's "My Toot Toot." It is as if Fogerty finally found his element and just revels in the feeling.
@poppaluv Angola was/is the Louisiana State Prison. During the 20th century, the NOPD often planted "evidence" on the accused who then went through a sham of a trial and often ended up serving time in Angola. As James Booker shouts during one of his rants, "Some of those boys in Angola are serving 200 and 300 years for nothing more than baking powder." James was well aware as he spent time there along with many other musicians from New Orleans, such as Aaron Neville.
@MultiKZB Yes, of course. Forgive me I misunderstood where you were coming from. Hell, I grew up in the Upper 9th(now in "da Parish"), and was arrested at the lakefront for felony concealed weapon. what was it? A spark plug socket. Yes ,read that again. I spent the night in OPP before they made it "nice" in the mid-'90s. LOL!! Good AND bad cops here.
@poppaluv Actually, there are good and bad cops everywhere...even in ole San Diego! lol I have often said that at least New Orleans was honest about its corrpution!! "A spark plug socket"...in the '90's yet...must admit though, that despite everything and having lived in San Diego for over 50 years, my heart is in New Orleans...going to get there yet...
I remember seeing these guys in the early 70`s in Perth, Aussie land and I think Sherbet were the warm up band complete with their first hit , Free the People.
After listening to this and then you listen to Leadbelly's version I'm starting to think Leadbelly was the best. For starters his so more heart felt and theirs just sounds way too different. It don't got no heart in it no soul listen to Leadbelly and you'll see what I mean.
Not to be confused with Creedence Clearwater REVISITED who I just saw at Westbury Theatre. My ticket said CCR, the original drummer and bass player were there, they played all the hits, but Fogerty was playing the same night a thousand miles away.
Thats right no fricken lip synching here and guess what no damn mixng with a dj backmasting on a record player just raw talent that sounded damn good. These boys knew how to do it.
When we wake up to the truth of life, inspired music like this will emerge and flourish again, and all the uninspired crap that people call "music" these days will fade away and be forgotten.
