@moonpie99 and don't these old videos prove what a blind, imature prick he was. I'm yet to see a replay that shows he was right to carry on at officials the way he did. I'll guarantee he never apologised to anyone after either. I'd forgotten what prize prick he was. Big thanks to the people who post this stuff. We never got these games in NZ and the best we could do was read about them in Tennis magazine. As a 12 year old I would have killed to see these games. Just superb.
RF If it wasn't bad for the enviornment or trees, I'd say they should use Wood Rackets again. Baseball didn't switch to Graphite Bats and kept the integrity of the game. Is it possible that they decided to allow the use of other materials for the racket because it's more of a European thing to experment and allow using this to increase speed?
Borg use to beat Lendl regularly with the wood in clay and grass but on hard courts, the racket favors. Besides being in great shape, Lendl practiced on the U.S. Open surface, scouted McEnroe with use of videotape, and dietary habits. McEnroe came from the Australian attitude of the 60's. Hard Training before turning pro. But once you turn pro, work and play hard.
Great stuff from Lendl in this match. I remember Curry Kirkpatrick writing that he took all the "artistry" from Mac and just "Swatted that junk off the premises."
Mc was a touch player like (and better than) Mecir, still using wood while John had changed. Ivan was more powerfull than Mc even when he started using graphite. They were two great different players
@McEnroeable no one was holding a gun to McEnroe's head. Dunlop had some great Graphite racquets around at the time - the 200G his brother was using and he ended up using was there but he was too bloody stubborn to use it and they made the Maxply McEnroe (the worst racquet ever made) as a half-way house solution. The Maxply was one of the great wooden racquets so why change?

Never saw this years ago. Was always curious. Wood vs Graphite. Mac should have trained harder and could have stayed on top longer.
