  • a true genius, soulful and beautiful... i can relate to this 'coz i lost my job, my pride and my confidence, but my woman still married me anyway... i quit smokin, drinkin and moved outta the city, all to save on the pennys... i got a crummy job to pay the smaller bills whilst she pays the heavier debts... i guess what i'm tryin to say is i love her, more than she'll ever know...

  • There's 4 tone deaf pricks who viewed this and disliked it!!

  • This is painfully beautiful...the best ever....Donny's voice was flawless...

  • meow

  • Pure, Unadulterated Class.

Mr Hathaway must have sang Gospel. Please, anybody send me something or link me up.

    Such power and raw emotion.........

I hope he is at peace.

  • one hell of a serenade

  • this is how i feel about my gf <3

  • Donny, Al, and Marvin are my all time favorite male singers. Nobody did it better.

  • @Cindydst81 Add Vandross to your list & that's about spot on.

  • CLASSIC STUFF!(Ezz!)

  • one of the best songs ever made!!!

  • The kind of music that never dies.

  • He has the most perfect voice ever....a combination of smooth, yet very soulful......My all time favorite singer!!!!!!

  • Absolutely Beatifulllll, He killed himself because of Roberta flack,, Madly in love with her and he revealed it to her and she turned him down. He jumbed from a building. True story.

  • @MrLisaFischer Wrong..He was dealing with other issues. he was schizophrenic. learn your history my friend.

  • @MrLisaFischer you are so right, exactly he was ill all his life with this terrible disease.

  • sublime

  • Listen to the live version people..Both are great, but he killed the live version just as much as he did the studio version....

  • best soul singer ever! he touchs my soul and gives me shivers everytime I hear him..and Lalah her voice is just pure magic :)

  • @MsLilDin I agree 100%..Theier on tons of great soul singers to name, but donny hathaway comes to mind first and his music actually brings me to tears sometimes, becaues of how soulful he was and the fact that he died so young makes it hurt that much more....

  • awesome

  • awesome, real music

  • hey

  • real recgnize real i hope my spelling is good

  • 3 dislikes huh? Their computers had to be upside down. That's the only explanation I can think of.

  • Voice of an angel.... true music.

  • I wish more of our music today sounded like this...

  • Amazing

  • I have not come across a single song by this man, that I don't like

  • I love her more than she'll ever know...

  • Boon Doc sampled this. I just realized that.

  • I love it!! It's truly amazing.

  • CLASSIC! Heart & Soul! We have two lives: The life that we learn from and the life we live from what we learned! Donny gave us songs that if we want to remember that life, all we need to do is listen to the DEEP LOVE , HURT & Pain that comes from having that ONE AND TRUE LOVE!!!! He was a great Writer, Arranger and Vocalist!

  • sang donny-sang donny-I know you are singin know matter where you are.luv-luv it;always will-juici29

  • J'adore ! quel grand artiste !

  • @nourdinefunkever oui, il est l'une des meilleures

  • This is a nice smooth version of this song but lacks the pain that Al Kooper wrote into the lyrics, still the think the original BS&T version is the best, even if Al did;nt have the best voice

  • I can't believe this song has 2 dislikes. Do people even know what good music is?

  • As many props as people give Donny Hathaway, he is still very underrated. He is simply one of the greatest of all time.

  • @davidgoodlettmusic The song breaks down and gets real real funky @ 2:52

  • Shocked to see 2 actual dislikes on this page... can't believe my eyes...

I would call them 'stupid', but that's a trifle bit generous so I won't bother.

    Classic, emotional, beautiful, genius Donny.

  • Vocally & Lyrically Brilliant!!!

  • Al Kooper was paying homage to a great song and entertainer. If you listen to "Child is Father to Man" he is paying his respects to America's best. By the way; read up on Al Kooper and you will see how much he is part of American Music. Even Donny had to "bow" and "respect" someone!!!

  • When I like something its because I really like it, I do thing because I want to do it, not because I want to fit in or winning your heart, I don't pretend or made up story to get recognized. We've been blessed to find each other and have a lot in common including the music we are listening to, the song that speak for us, the music that moves us but still, I love you more than you'll ever know and this song is my story and don't let me say 'I told you so!'

  • I think this is just a song for the ages, frankly. I was reading another post somewhere else where someone described this as being from outer space, which is another way to say it. As such, it is open (and this is part of what makes people say things like "for the ages" and "from outer space, btw) to more than one interpretation. Kooper's is one. Winehouse did an EXCELLENT JOB on hers. Jerry LaCroix did a completely different one when he sang it. Hathaway's obviously is another.

  • This is nice, but without steve katz's guitar is a little naked ;)

  • Comment removed

  • What a tragic story.. died wayyy too young and the paranoid schizophrenia was killing a truly GREAT and AMAZING Composer, Arranger, Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Engineer!! wow! R.I.P. Donny!

  • I don't know which song I love more this one or "Giving Up".

  • DIVINE !

  • Beautiful.

  • Al Kooper did an absolutely incredible performance on the first BST album..even more considering his vocal limitations...it is hard to top the feeling an artist can bring to his own music.

Donny brings an amazing voice and a style to the song...miss him much.

  • beautiful

  • rhe 2 ppl who dislike should jump out a window

  • Al Kooper's version is nice, but more emotion does not necessarily make it a better rendition. Donny Hathaway was in a class all by himself.

  • @TwinCities16 Too right Donny Hathaway was pure class!

  • Nice voice but Al Kooper's version has much more emotion

  • @CheKerouac just listened to al koopers version and your saying al's had more emotion...... your kiddin right?

  • @ChocolateJesus101 you took the words out of my mouth. Al Koopers version sounds like a parody. That guy cant sing and Donny's voice has so much depth and soul. Its amazing.

  • This is one of my favorite song of all time. Kenny Lattimore did a great remake on his "The Soul of Man: Kenny Lattimore" CD

  • I wish someone like Madlib would make an album of Donny Hathaway remixes. What a gift that would be!

  • WOW!!!

  • This is how you say it with cha chest

  • Damn, I feel this.

  • This is the greatest musical genius ever...

  • i love this song i love all his music i love him R.I.P

  • voice of a ledgendary man of compassionand love/is there any more? juici29

  • THIS CAT WAS THE REAL DEAL, HE WILL BE FOREVER MISSED.

  • This song makes me wanna cry.

  • heavy

  • i used to work with this woman who did not like R&B or motown music. i had bought a copy of donny hathaway and gave it to her. i told her to give it a try and if she did not like it, she can do what she will to the CD. when i saw her the next day, i asked if she listened to the CD and what she thought of it. she loved it. =) the power of donny hathaway. ^.^

  • I wish I would have had the honor of hearing him perform live...

  • @missbhaven70 me too. All geniuses seem to be tortured...

  • absolutely love this song!

  • timeless and sooooooooooobeautiful!!!

  • @xenakaii

Ever hear Blood, Sweat & Tears version from their very first album?
