Does anybody know the proper tuning for guitars when it comes to klezmer music? Or is it just a matter of playing in the right key, with the standard EADGBe tuning?
This 10+ minutes of joy originates from the PBS presentation “In the Fiddler’s House”. Doesn’t matter where the music stems from, if it makes you feel happy, that’s all that matters. If you find pleasure from it then you’ve spent a productive 10 minutes out of your life. BTW, I happen to adore Perlman and am a big fan of Klezmer music.
Sorry to disappoint you guys... This is not essentially Jewish... It's Romanian/ Moldavian doina. You'll find this sound all over southern and eastern Romania.
The second part starting at 1:50 is actually a rather old Oltenian folk song (a ballad).
@Kostagh you're correct. the first few pieces are romanian pieces played in a romanian style. from the point where it goes into black and white footage, it's all klezmer music until the part with the klezmatics.
On the other hand, I would propose that a romanian melody played completely in a klezmer style becomes a klezmer melody. If you discount all of those from being jewish music, there is very little left as jewish traditional music from that area was basically local stuff played jewishly!
Very nice, love the different technique to play the violin, Perlman plays it with his classical formation, and the other guy plays with the violin stuck into his armpit, LOL at 1:24...great luxury these guys had having this master playing with them!
@TheSRalston it's funny though, if you watch him play this style, perlman is playing way more loose and sloppy than he would if he were playing the brahms with the berlin phil. still has all the chops and training and gorgeous tone, but he is able to leave some of the refinement at the door and just jam out with these guys.
This is Ashkenazi Jewish music, influenced by all kinds of Eastern Europe's music, but mostly by the Romanian folk music. You should be proud to be part of such a great culture and people which has it's influence over various domains, including music.
And, by the way, this doesn't even sound like a "doina". No. Maybe like a "sarba" or "batuta", but deffinitely not "doina". Those were sad songs.
I m an atheist... and as an professional historian, I have a sincere appreciation for jewish culture both from an anthropological and personal standpoint ....but this!! I want in! I'll convert! give me the Torah it will be worth it! LOL
@Keatelite Well atheist;apart from being "a pro.hysterian atheist ,WHY DONCHA LISTEN to the music and forget about religion? I think u might be an american....
these people are probably not particularly religious. as someone who rejected the religion, i'd say read the torah first & then see if you want in. probably not. as a matter of fact, you'll probably be appalled. jewish culture is one thing, jewish religion, a bit different. there is a relationship, but it can be a pretty contentious one... about 50% of jews are non-believers these days, and only about 10% orthodox / ultra orthodox (i.e. very religious).
@schrinivas please let me make a correction: the piece at 3:50 is called 'sherele' , relatively easy on violin but Mr Perlman embellishes it in a way i could never do. You can find 'der heyser bulgar' sherele and other awesome songs on the 'in the fiddler's house' album, it's one of my favorites.
could also be hungarian or balkan-sound, i don´t care, i like it, very much! it is a happy sound, this it what counts! EUROPA! our difference is our rich.....
Yakov, if you allow me, I think that the name of one of the bands is Brave Old World, not Brave New World. (Very cool name, too!) Thank you for the vid - great
A lot of "klezmer" music was played at weddings and other celebrations - and is akin to local sounds, whether in Rumania, Bulgaria, Bessarabia, Greece and so on... a big part of the sound was the instruments - violin, clarinet and accordion ... all portable....
