I think I do remember that there were some sources that quoted a total of 750,000 Ameren UE customers without power from this storm and the one that hit days later in the St.Louis metro area. They brought in help from surrounding states such as Iowa to help Ameren UE deal with such a large power outage with significant damage from downed trees and other things.
If my memory serves me correct, there was a wind gust of 92 mph recorded in the St.Louis area from this storm. What was freaky was the track of the storm. It had it's origins in central Illinois and then proceeded to make a beeline southward into the St.Louis metro area. Normally thunderstorms come in from the west or southwest of St.Louis and move eastward into the Metro area.
@RiderAndKallen Many people went without power for 7-14 days after this storm. We went 4 days without power, with temperatures in the upper 90's in the afternoons. More than the usual downed trees were lying in the streets and caving in people's homes. In St. Louis, we are very familiar with typical summer thunderstorms. This storm was NOT a typical storm!
@howareu666 ya cahokia had a tornado touch down 92 mph winds no power for a few days not a week though for us at the time of this storm at night i was at a friends house in rolla and we saw a live national weather service radar and all we saw was purple and red on the screen we were like holy shet
Yes the most frusterating thing was that right after the storm the tempature shot up to 102 degrees. 2 days later a second durencho hit and knocked out everything else.
i worked at a hotel at the time and i stayed one night there then they said i couldn't stay anymore and the next day i got up, got my paycheck, it took me 5 hours to cash it, get gas and get lunch. it was a scarey moment.
what was so weird about this, is that, that acutal gust front was heading due east to chicago only a few hours before hand. it made a complete b-line, and swung around to the south and just nailed stl.
I have to comment, because I had been watching that storm since it was in Iowa. It just hooked about 150 miles out of Chicago and then went straight toward us. As it went toward us, I could see it getting bigger and more powerful, and just kept ticking off the minutes till it hit. It was a hellova storm.
i have only been in one massive storm once and it was really bad, but i want to live in america cause you get loads :(. I live in england and its rubbish for storms >:|
I remember it very well also. I was working at the dome we had a convertion in at the time I was working PFA and I saw the sky not looking to good then I found out that I had no power and was out for 2 and half days. Now we had power back brifly for about 30sec. the night after storm 1. Then went back into work the next day and the day after that where around 2 hit and got power back after round 2 and lost no tv for 3 more days. Then switched to DircTV and never looked back since.
when it happened at my house it was like an eiry movie i was on my computer looked away brown out shut it off opened the door and then lighting exploded in the back yard. crap was flying down the street. then the next day i was picking up my trash cans and they tried to turn on the electricity. failed. boom. then there was another storm
IIRC, this was the same storm that disrupted the Cards game. I was in St Charles County and remember this storm clearly. I remember being very surprised by this storm as it came from the northeast instead of the normal southwest. Even before seeing the radar on the news, I remember remarking to my sister-in-law that the wind was blowing the wrong way.
No we do get the ordinary garden variety thunderstorms quite often. This however was a mesoscale complex that brought downbursts of 92 mph across the entire St. Louis Metropolitan area, knocking out power to over 500,000 in 103 degree heat with 90% humidity. My power was out for 7 days.
I lived in High Ridge at that time (Dittmer now). I remember seeing it on the radar coming from the northeast. Which is weird since most storms come from west. Standing outside The sky was like a murky brown, and it was windy. I believe this storm spawned a tornado over by Columbia Illinois.
i live in collinsvillle illinois me n my grandpa seen a funnel cloud droppin down its funny it was 101 dregees that day and tornado hit with the next storm that hit the two days later i dont kno which worst this or the ice storm of 2006
I HATED that storm. It scared me to death!!!! it was so suddnen and then POW!! hit us. I was at gymnastics at the time and then the power went out and i fell. it was pretty scary. i thought iwas gunna die!

This is a typical daily Florida summer thunderstorm. Why was it hanging up in Missouri?
