i SAW IT LIVE WHILE HAVING HIGHLIGHTS DONE BY MY MOTHER. THIS IS ENGRAVED INTO MY MEMORY. NEVER FORGETTING 50- PEOPLE WHO DIED WATCHING FOOTBALL. XXXX
I was six and remember watching this on Grandstand that day. The image of the policeman with his head on fire never left me to this day. RIP the 56 from a Celtic fan, never forgotten
I can't believe what I just heard that was very hard to listen to. I was just a small boy when I first heard this but going through some footie videos and found this brings it all into perspective. Its gut wrenching to hear the panic in the commentators voice, to have been in their must have been hell on earth. Nothing but sympathy and respect to anyone affected by this. Bradford c. is in my thoughts.
The problem here was the extremes of heat radiation from the fire. This is caused by the structural defects of the roof. Min at 4:23. you can see it clearly, at once begin to burn like the hair of the man, although this is our suite 10 m from the fire.
@vejet How do you come to that conclusion? The fire consumed the WHOLE stand in under 2 minutes and he stayed by his mike until the last possible second during which time he was quite obviously trying to help usher people out.
I saw this broadcast live on the day and couldn't believe how fast it all happened.
My deepest respect goes out to the absolute selfless heroism of the Bradford police and also to those supporters who went back in to help rescue their fellow supporters.
i am a leeds fan and always will be but will never find this kind of thing funny, bradford and sheffield are our nearest rivals but in situations like this football comes last on the list, nobody should lose their lives going to watch their team play, bradford fire and hillsbrough, i truly send my deepest regrets and sympathy to anyone involved or anyone that had family or friends involved, rip to all that lost their lives!!! xxx rip
@Bopsy44 i'm sorry for your loss and pain, but it's very simple, don't watch it, and let others remember what happens when people are stupid, and hope they learn lessons from it.
i take my hat of to you city fans unlike the scoucers you are very dignified in your silence...had it of been at anfield we wouldnt have herd the last of it for years to come with the beetles and jerry and the pacemakers making songs for them
@mrtoptenatten In regards to the scousers you're a discrace. I take it you're referring to Hillsborough. The difference is chum, they were painted as the villans in that. They were made out to be hooligans, thieves. They were simple people, just as the people at Bradford, going to watch a football match.
Making such comments not only blackens the name of Liverpool fans but also Bradford. You disgust me you vile human being
a lot of these deaths could have been prevented if the Exit gates were not locked. most of the victims were found piled up against the locked gates trying to get out. the fire burned right over them. To all the Police Officers and fans who risked their lives to help others......my heartfelt thanks and praise goes out to you all. you are Heros every one of you. God bless. RIP 56
@pyro999maniac, they also should of clean that trash up underneath the stands. It was years of it accumulating and they were just too lazy to do that. Its sad that it sometimes takes people dying to make a change like that.
To all the police officers on duty at the ground that day, you are true HERO'S. The 56 R.I.P.could have been so much higher without your BRAVE actions, be PROUD of yourselves. This includes the fellow fans who helped in the rescue of dozens more potential victims.
How can u rate this video? Terrible tragedy I've only recently came across - I'm 21 so wasn't born at the time but have heard about it but didn't think it was this bad. RIP x
@ozzieksk it was an old wooden stand and there was stuff stored under it and they think tht sum1 dropped a fag and it set on fire and then set the stand on fire
My Dad was a policeman who used to work Bradford City games at the time of the fire. He was 20 years old, and on the day of the fire he'd swapped shifts with a friend so that he could attend his cousin's wedding. As soon as he heard the new he left and went in to help out - obviously it was too late by then but he still helped get the bodies out. The other officer, who he'd swapped shifts with, had his hands severely burned helping people onto the pitch. R.I.P. from me and dad - both Leeds fans.
RIP from a spurs fan, this happened when I was young and haven't seen this in a long time, that sad event kicked me again. Sad day. Did the comentor make it?
If I remember rightly one of these commentators had his kids in the stand in an other section and didnt know if they were safe or not - hellish. ITS JUST A GAME.
The reason it happened was that years of trash was accumulated under the stands. The safety inspectors said that to clean it up and it was just an accident waiting to happen. All it took was a cigarette that fell under the stands to cause it. I mean the 1980's was a horrible time in English football. This, Heysel, and Hillsbrough, and hooliganism. Luckily something like this doesn't really happen anymore.
I saw footage taken from a televising of this game as part of a fire safety training course. It was used by the instructors to show how quickly a fire can spread. They warned us it was disturbing and they were right, it was chilling to watch, there were people on the pitch meters away catching alight from radiation of heat.
I looked up Bradford City history and this came up so I didn't watch it for those who believe that i did and commented so.I am using somebody else's profile from work as i don't have an account myself i'm 57 and the person's account i'm using is 24.Thank you akablenk71 for you reply that you sent privately it was appreciated, unfortunately frustration took over when i initally saw this. I'm not looking for sympathy the only people who should get that is the 56.

@Bopsy44 If you know what it is why watch it? It's right and proper that people see this, as this happened through sheer negligence by the football authorities. If it's just forgotten about nothing will be learned.

I was actually a mansfield fan visiting with my dad when this happend due to family living in the area. I was very young, but the flames are still a distant memory. It's just horrible to even think about it.
sooo chillin, the panick and fear in his voice...."watch for the kiddies"..sticks in my mind, havin 3 kids myself n the eldest who's 11 loving football the thought of taking him to a football game scares the hell of me n i don't think i'll ever tke him.
The ironic thing is that the stand that burned was going to be torn down and a new concrete one built, which did happen. This was the last game of the season and the last for the doomed stand.
@fayge100 I think as people died in this tragedy, there is no need for comments suggesting things like "this football team is better than that football team".
I didn't even know about this event until today when it was mention on the Radio. It really is so sad, very chilling commentary. My thought are with all those that were effected.
We will never forget these pictures, we watched live on tv 25 years ago today. Truley awful. We will never forget those who were injured and died at Bradford City. Rest in Peace......
I worked as a freelance radio reporter for Pennine, and was at Leeds Road for Huddersfield Town v Manchester City that day. I had covered City's game the previous May Bank Holiday Monday when they clinched the title at Bolton. Ste Greenall
I was 14 years old at the time watching it on the tv in floods of tears.25 years on, it still effects me in the same way.On May 11th we should all spare a thought for those people who went to that game never to return and also the brave people who helped so many many escape the fire. Football is by its very nature a tribal game, team versus team, supporter versus supporter but wherever you live, whatever team you support, remember we are all human beings. Remember those who are no longer with us.
Shocking to see on TV in 1985, shocking all over again to hear this fresh account (to me anyway).
I feel like I have to say this every time I comment on a BCFC fire video (yeah, been viewing a few lately):
No matter what else has happened elsewhere, at other matches or on other occasions, the police did extraordinary and heroic service on 11 May 1985, along with so many others in attendance. The videos show police rescuing people while themselves burning, then going back again to help others.
Its times like this when football fans put aside there differences and remembers this tragic day. I for one, would like to thank every one for there kind words and support as this was a very tragic day and will always be remembered. R.I.P 85
These are vivid memories for me. I recall the panic of people trying to get out and the intense heat that spread very rapidly. My dear mum watching it TV knowing that I was there, fortunately I was unharmed, but so many weren't and this was so unexpected for a little town like Bradford. My thoughs are with the families who still suffer the loss of their loved ones.
Ncfc supporter in peace- I'm 15 years old and have heard of that awful disaster and I feel so awful for the people affected by this event R.I.P to the victims.
@darbs55 Same, I'm 18 and a Fulham fan and saw this the other day on Football Focus, had no idea about it beforehand, but as soon as they played this piece of commentary my insides froze. This is the sound of pure terror and panic. Unbelievable. RIP to those who perished. This commentary is awful as it leaves it to the imagination - one can only imagine the terror and pain.
For everyone in the UK, there's a documentary about this awful disaster on Radio 4 tonight (Saturday) at 8pm. You will be able to listen to it again on the iPlayer.
I'm a Gillingham fan so our current connection is Peter Taylor and Michael Flynn, I wish them and your club well for next season in a push for promotion. I have watched other videos related to this but this is the first time I've heard the Original Radio Commentary and I'm stuck for words. Amazing how he kept everyone informed right until the end of his unplanned end to the broadcast yet kept his cool. Poignant very sad.
My father was a police officer at this match, he had to help remove the bodies from the stand. He doesn't like to talk about it to this day, and i feel his mood change whenever I mention.
My dad was at that match. I remember it like it was yesterday. He asked me and my brother if we wanted to come to football. We said no, as we wanted to carry on playing with our cowboy and Indian toys in the garden. We were only about 6 and 8. My mum didn't want my dad to go. She had a bad premonition something was going to happen. But my dad still went. He was ok tho. R.I.P those who weren't.
R.I.P all those who died that horrible day, I was shown this video last year for fire training safety at Heathrow. I also praise the Police Officers who risked and saved many lifes. True Heros that day.

Was the radio commentator actually in the stand that was on fire???

Yes, it was Tony Delahunty; he was in the stand.

He doesn't like to talk about it to this day, and i feel his mood change whenever I mention.
keeperofthecheese 1 year ago
My dad was at that match. I remember it like it was yesterday. He asked me and my brother if we wanted to come to football. We said no, as we wanted to carry on playing with our cowboy and Indian toys in the garden. We were only about 6 and 8. My mum didn't want my dad to go. She had a bad premonition something was going to happen. But my dad still went. He was ok tho. R.I.P those who weren't.
