Like ( jum1801 ) i have been listening to Elton John since he scene in the 70's and this is a good version of this song but like pianoplayinman said the 18 minute version from 11 - 17 - 70 is pure talent. I will only say i live in the city that has
The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and since Elton John has been comming here i
isn't there supposed to be footage of this concert somewhere? i am aware of the 1972 concert with the royal philharmonic and have seen it, but i'm sure the 1971 one was also filmed
One of the best Version's of this Song I have ever heard. But it still doens't compare to the version on the album 11-17-70. that one was 18 minutes of pure talent.
Yeah jtsnowman66 , his voice could reach also a high B.. by that time he was 24 yo and clean from drugs alcohol and similar... I wonder how he'd have become now if he didnt' abuse during the years...
his range as far as regular voice only went a few notes higher than it does now.. he still gets up to G pretty regularly, that seems to be his limit though. He could belt it or falsetto higher if he wanted back then, but really was only comfortable up to like.. A and B with his normal voice
20 years of cocaine and booze ripped out those incredible high notes that he hit dead-on with absolute confidence back in the days when he played music worth listening to...which ended around 1975.
A voice declines over time, anyone's voice. I find some of his currents works just as powerful. One day everyone has to retire. Elton isn't ready to. He gives great concert! :) Have you heard many other great voices as individuals get older! You haven't lived long enough.
I suspect I've been listening to EJ a few decades longer than you. I was there when he hit the scene in 1970 like a whirlwind. The loss of some of his once- incredibly accurate and powerful high range isn't all his fault (although his coke binging hurt it badly), but he also had tremendous energy, stamina and discipline - and he wasted those.
What I object to is that for decades he has preferred instead to self-indulgently play the Raging Queen Does Cabaret. What a waste.
true everyones voice declines over time. but not that much. if you will listen to some of steve wonders stuff. up untill a few years ago he sounded just like he did 30 years ago.

The best version of the song as a whole I reckon. Great encore.
I don't like his attempts at country voice, this concert avoids it :).

@EJinthe70s he also had an operation to remove nodules in his throat which made him lose his falsetto and high range

awesome version!! I just love the way he sings those high notes.. Current versions are great but they dont capture the same emotion.
