The money that Charlie and Louis were taking to Australia was their own exicution money but they didn't know that because Sal tricked them into thinking that it was for something else. The money was going to Mr. Smith so he could kill Charlie and Louis and Sal didn't have to get blamed for being responsible for their murder. You have to pay really close attention to the movie but trust me it makes sense. If you have any more questions just respond. :)
