A Canadian Bassist. Not 'a French Bassist'. Well- 'French Canadian' (Quebec). A great guy too. I met him and got a few lessons off of him. Very approachable.
What a player! This guy does what Mark King can't...all due respect to Mark King...but six strings! The music is very similar to Tower Of Power. Capische!
@trapfman That technique is called "slap" and you won't even start to understand how much work, practice and dedication has been put into this so he can master it and be one of the best at it!
@katraal AND....adding the fact that he uses all the fingers of his right hand(with the exception of his pinky)to slap, double thumb, and pluck the strings with limited hand movement,is quite an accomplishment in itself!
@trapfman i MUST join the million billion in condemning your REALLY stupid post!! Double thumb technique sounds great, allows great playing and LOOKS great!!
i dont understand those who dont enjoy dissonance. when you think about it a third is dissonant (car horns for example) besides. the dissonance adds an intensity to this piece and makes it just that much more satisfying when it goes back to consonance
i dont understand those who dont enjoy dissonance. when you think about it a third is dissonant (car horns for example) besides. the dissonance adds an intensity to this piece and makes it just that much more satisfying when it goes back to consonance
and just to those anti slap people. eat alain's shit
@FindingMyF33t In this sort of music, dissonant sounding chords seem to work well with the music, however, I do agree with you, its the sound sample, or something...it just sounds like its crapping all over an otherwise great piece of music! lol Might be what they were going for though! :)
@jlebesis True, but that's usually when the dissonant chords are resolved through use of suspended notes etc. As a virtuoso performance, it's probably easier to get away with though, as the song's purpose is to showcase Alain Caron's talent.
Nice tone actually, maybe a little thin on solo. I'd be happy to have it. But this is the shit. The BPM is 130, not 170. That would be hellatious! What a killer groove.
There are very few things in this world that really make me happy. One is a low flying fighter jet at the speed of sound. The other is a bass slapping sixteenth notes at 170 BPM.
@gebass6 no worries. :D A good rule of thumb when trying to guess tempo is that Jungle/Drum&Bass tracks are 170-180 bpm most the time, Trance is usually 140-150 and house and funk is usually 125-140.
@KaslarProductions Well, the first two music types I've never listen to.So I don't have them in my head. But I used to be into a bit of Funk back in the day.
@EdgarDuVois He learned the trade with extraodinaire guitarist Michel Cusson.
Remark he doesn't play a 5 string. He's on a 6 strings, one 4th higher, He could very well be into higher tones and sounds for some cultural or emulation reasons (just to prove to Cuss that bass is just as expressive than guitar). He had to cope with some amazing beast on a regular guitar against him in the UZEB years.
But, that's the sound on Alain, like it or not. :O))
Spasm13: "Is it just me or do Rhodes keyboard sound like those cheap plastic keyboard you buy for your kids at Walmart?".....
Now, Its that a question made by a total ignorant or what? Look, you cheap-synth lover, Walmart's CD dept. buyer: virtually every keyboard on this planet has sound banks emulating Rhodes piano. There must be some reason for that, but I cant hope you will understand it.
If this song could have been played by King Crimson or the Pastorius big band, it would have been fantastic, but Alain Caron have been hit by disease: the sound of 80's/90's jazz fusion.
Spasm.... A Rhodes piano has yet to be reproduced with all the keyboards out there, it is one of the most sought out sounds for serious keyboard musicians....You cant beat a Rhodes piano!!!!!.....
