@bobbyp21 Truth of the matter is the band's producer hired guitarist on the down low to write record for the band in the studio. Get Your Wings, Toys and Rocks all have cuts of other cats playing solos. It was a secret for many years. However the internet brought the truth to light.
@bobbyp21 Dude, he is the best guitarist who ever lived. but hes not the most underrated. thats probly ace frehley. BUT, he is the best but a lot of people recognize that. know what im sayin?
Yeah, Train and Elevator are Joe's best solos. He certainly rocks and would respectfully be the first to admit he is nowhere remotely close to Jimmy Page.
one of the reasons why joe and brad didn't play all the solos from the records was because they were so high and exhausted from all the drugs they took
@thinkinoutloud123 are you forgetitng the fact that both brad and joe play train kept a rollin live..??? aerosmith usually end the shows with that song...so that would make ur comment completely pointless....and obviously while theyre on stage u can see them both playing
Dick Wagner played the solos on Train Kept a Rollin' and Woman of the World off Get Your Wings, all others were Joe Perry. All of Toys and Rocks were either Perry or Whitford.
@stinkystubin Another mistaken soul. Neither Perry nor Whitford played all of the solos you hear on Toys. Understand that Aerosmith were primarily signed based on image appeal and less on sheer talent. Just the facts. Just the facts.
The rumor, which I can vouch is true, that Jack Douglas had hired professional guitarists to help record some of the cuts on the "get your wings" and "toys in the attic" albums has really started to surface lately. Do we really care? Besides this would have been more interesting had these facts surfaced several years sooner. Aerosmith's book is all but closed these days anyway.
@ScarletBerlin Great-Classic-Rock-Guitar-Solos on Amazon. This book has the first solo on 'Train' transcribed, it acknowledges that it was played by Steve Hunter on the album 'Get Your Wings' ; the second solo was by Dick Wagner.
@paully11137 Your right! Let's not forget Wagner. My bad. One has got to wonder why Perry never paid homage to the cats who helped make "him" look good as a player. It was interesting talking to an old timer in New York who is still in the industry about this. What an ear full I got. So cool!
@AgilePenatonic1 I'm a fan also. But you are only half right. Joe did not play the solos on Train Kept A rollin but the guy who did was not from England. That's Alice Copper's guitarist Steve Hunter you are hearing. No offence but Perry could never play like that. In fact, a few cuts on Toys In The Attic, , i.e. Adam's Apple and Walk This Way, were done by hired guns as well.
i've been listening to perry all my life........he's the reason i play guitar.....all i play is aerosmith......very proud to say joe is my idol and it SUKKS aerosmith broke up.....steven tyler & joe perry r the BEST together....no one can compare to them!!!
@crushellcaines broke up? they never did or will break up....if anything they're taking a well needed rest, i mean come on 40 years can make anyone cranky.
I know I'll get hate for this but I'm pretty sure if you put Joe Perry, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton together, Joe would be just as great on the guitar as they are. I'm sick of people judging guitarists by age. The only reason Joe is considered superior to Slash is because he's older, and the only reason Jimmy Page is considered better than Joe is because Aerosmith came after Zeppelin. Just like the only reason John Lennon is considered the best is because he was there first, it's just stupid!
Back in the day Aerosmith regularly used outside help, namely guitarist, to add significant artistic touches to their albums. Get Your Wings, Toys and Rocks included. Simply search around the net and you'll see. Try Wikipedia for example. Joe indeed has the rockstar look. Sort of a hybrid look between Jeff Beck and Keith Richards. But as Joe once said himself, "I'm a entertainer not a not a guitar god."
@homeydontlie any humble person would say that...but forget the record if indeed they got a little help..look at his live performances...his feel and emotion, his awesome licks, his rythm, his everything...its undeniable that joe perry is a super gifted guitar player...one of the greatest indeed..speed is not an important factor in music, i say so cause thats what most ignorant people are about...but joe is amazing..period...there's no such thing as a guitar god
No disrespect but understand something here. Neither Joe nor Brad actually played half of the guitar solos on the albums. Hired guns! Lips, that hold secrets, tend to loosen over time. This cat has been out of the bag for some time, so to speak.
@AceInTheWhole94 of course slash is still good. hes a legend. but sometimes he is a little overrated. there is no best guitarist or anything like that because there are so many different styles and genres. everyone is different in their own unique way and when it comes to music, everyone has something different than everyone else.
Nice Video, I gave you the thumb up! However 2 little things: you didn't put any live performance, which is where an artist generally gives his best and worse you didn't put the song Walk This Way, which has probably the most famous riff in rock history.
Still a great example of Joe's taste and composition skills.
@verbw002 no, Angus isn't. not saying i hate him, but he's not even on rolling stone's top 100 guitar players... and Joe is #48. In my opinion Jimi Hendrix is the best...
@Phoenitron I disagree with a lot of the Rolling Stone list. Kurt Cobain, as much as I love Nirvana, shouldn't be above Eddie Van Halen. Slash isn't on there and should be, he's one of the most iconic guitarists around. Hendrix was awesome and I love him, but certainly not the best. He was a pioneer for sure, but not the best. Angus Young is a very underated guitarist, so is his brother, Malcom. Joe's fucking awesome too, it's just that Angus is the whole reason I play rock n roll
@verbw002 yeah i understand where you're coming from and i do find rolling stones complete bull shit. did you know steven tyler is 99 on their singers list? they need to get a real list. they've got guitar players on the guitar list most people have never heard of.
@Phoenitron Really? He should be way up there with Aretha man, he does things with his voice I swear aren't human! And I agree with that, I also don't think that Jack White should be on there at all, he's really not that good. I think it's time they revised their lists eh?
@verbw002 ikr? personally i think they should base it off votes from the public instead of deciding it themselves. And it's hard to believe with all the things Steven's been through, and what he's come out as, that he's only 99.
@Phoenitron Yer man I totally agree, that'd be a much fairer way of doing it. Although it'd probably be full of metal guitarists lol Not that I'm against metal, their just not the best.
And yer, I just got his autobiography and it's pretty great! He's been through a lot all right! What's more amazing is he can still sing like that after all the drugs and an operation on his throat!
@verbw002 Omg yeah. And I read something somewhere that like 2 of his toes are overlapping because of some accident, but he still does all that stuff on stage. I saw him last August and the way he sang and did his thing, if you didn't know who steven was at that concert, you would have never thought he did all the things and put up with all the things he has and done.
@Phoenitron Holy shit, I didn't know that! He's defs one of my favourite singers of all time. You ever heard of Danny Bowes? He's a British singer from thunder, he's amazing, check out Dirty Love, Love Walked In and Low Life In High Places, you'll hear what I mean!
I prefer Slash, but he learnt from Perry and Jimmy Page. Anyway I really like Joe Perry!! Be onest you too out there: Slash and Perry are both two of the greatest guitarists of all time
My dad was wounded in Desert Storm, an Army Ranger who is now paralized & in wheelchair. Even disabled, he used to take me to every Aerosmith show that came near us~~his all time fave band. Out of the blue he stopped listenting to them (I thought it was cos he always said the old A.smith was so better, but found out he had read the band's autobiography. In it Joe says :Steven is always hanging out with those freaks in wheelchairs at shows. I'll never go to another of their shows, but love Steve

In my opinion Joe Perry is so underrated as a guitarist as well as Peter Frampton ,there is more to music than just listening to lyrics which is what I think in my opinion is what the average person does as opposed to listening to the real music that goes on.
"Home Tonight' isn't that good compared to some other stuff in the 70s. "Walk This Way, Sweet Emotion, Toys in the Attic, No More No More, Bright Light Fright, Get the Lead Out, Rats in the Cellar, Adam's Apple" Some stuff of Pump and Get a Grip that are really good as well.
First of all...None of the "Train Kept a Rollin" solos are Joe. Jack Douglas brought in session players Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. You also left off some really good ones from the old days, and "Dude Looks Like a Lady" is one of his best. "SOS" is Brad Whitford. You better do some more research.
@weathered79 he has 26 guitars and 26 back ups its freakin crazy. i dont even think im right because with all the guitars ive seen him with, god its probably like a freakin museum.
@FuckWorris Yeah, "SOS" and the first "Woman of the World" are both Brad. Jack Douglas brought in session guys for "Train Kept a Rollin", its neither Joe nor Brad.
RICHIE SAMBORA AND JOE PERRY ARE THE BEST and most underated rock guitarists..........Slash is OVERated , the guy cant play solo and he's trying to be Perry
Sad how such good playing from the band, in this case Joe's great guitar skills, has to be masked by crappy over production on a ton of sappy ballads that suck.
i'm no genius, but slash's sound is derived mostly from perry and hendrix, rather than page... some particular songs of aerosmith in which slash's guitar sound is quite similar, are home tonight and back in the saddle. both from the album "rocks" of '76..
Slash went to the school of Joe Perry and graduated with honors! Slash and I are the same age (43) and when we were a whopping 3 years old Joe had already landed a record deal with Aerosmith. Most "kids" our age back then looked up to guitarists like Joe. Who wouldn't. Slash is VERY F'n good but, Joe taught us all the licks... he sent us all to school!
@misticalwonder93 .....welll...... one moment, my friend. Do not be so black and white. There may be some guitar player that may advance some pretend to be the greatest.
what is important is that we all enjoy what we like and that we respect all, those who we like as well as those we do not.
@crushellcaines Slash has a lot of influences and Joe Perry is not his 1st influence. Read more about that. If Perry wasn't there Slash would still be a kickass guitarist minus the little bit of Perry in him.
Tou make it like Perry is the reason Slash is so great but you know that ain't true.
My good friend Mary went pickin' blueb
erries & overstepped he property, Joe rode up on his Fresian & cautioned her.
She called to let me know. Wish I'd been there. JOE PERRY U RULE (in my book)

Phoenitron 8 months ago in playlist Good Music
@Phoenitron I disagree with a lot of the Rolling Stone list. Kurt Cobain, as much as I love Nirvana, shouldn't be above Eddie Van Halen. Slash isn't on there and should be, he's one of the most iconic guitarists around. Hendrix was awesome and I love him, but certainly not the best. He was a pioneer for sure, but not the best. Angus Young is a very underated guitarist, so is his brother, Malcom. Joe's fucking awesome too, it's just that Angus is the whole reason I play rock n roll
verbw002 8 months ago
@verbw002 yeah i understand where you're coming from and i do find rolling stones complete bull shit. did you know steven tyler is 99 on their singers list? they need to get a real list. they've got guitar players on the guitar list most people have never heard of.
Phoenitron 8 months ago
@Phoenitron Really? He should be way up there with Aretha man, he does things with his voice I swear aren't human! And I agree with that, I also don't think that Jack White should be on there at all, he's really not that good. I think it's time they revised their lists eh?
verbw002 8 months ago
@verbw002 ikr? personally i think they should base it off votes from the public instead of deciding it themselves. And it's hard to believe with all the things Steven's been through, and what he's come out as, that he's only 99.
Phoenitron 8 months ago
@Phoenitron Yer man I totally agree, that'd be a much fairer way of doing it. Although it'd probably be full of metal guitarists lol Not that I'm against metal, their just not the best.
And yer, I just got his autobiography and it's pretty great! He's been through a lot all right! What's more amazing is he can still sing like that after all the drugs and an operation on his throat!
verbw002 8 months ago
@verbw002 Omg yeah. And I read something somewhere that like 2 of his toes are overlapping because of some accident, but he still does all that stuff on stage. I saw him last August and the way he sang and did his thing, if you didn't know who steven was at that concert, you would have never thought he did all the things and put up with all the things he has and done.
Phoenitron 8 months ago
@Phoenitron Holy shit, I didn't know that! He's defs one of my favourite singers of all time. You ever heard of Danny Bowes? He's a British singer from thunder, he's amazing, check out Dirty Love, Love Walked In and Low Life In High Places, you'll hear what I mean!

Add in Train Kept a Rollin Live.
And the ending sweet emotion solo.
And Amazing.
NowYouDieAndCry 1 year ago
"Home Tonight' isn't that good compared to some other stuff in the 70s. "Walk This Way, Sweet Emotion, Toys in the Attic, No More No More, Bright Light Fright, Get the Lead Out, Rats in the Cellar, Adam's Apple" Some stuff of Pump and Get a Grip that are really good as well.
theShowStopper321 1 year ago
First of all...None of the "Train Kept a Rollin" solos are Joe. Jack Douglas brought in session players Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter. You also left off some really good ones from the old days, and "Dude Looks Like a Lady" is one of his best. "SOS" is Brad Whitford. You better do some more research.
theShowStopper321 1 year ago
add amazing.

@FuckWorris Yeah, "SOS" and the first "Woman of the World" are both Brad. Jack Douglas brought in session guys for "Train Kept a Rollin", its neither Joe nor Brad.

RICHIE SAMBORA AND JOE PERRY ARE THE BEST and most underated rock guitarists..........Slash is OVERated , the guy cant play solo and he's trying to be Perry
georgegregoriou 1 year ago
@georgegregoriou actually Slash is just following Perry's steps because Perry influenced Slash to become a kick ass guitar player.

Sad how such good playing from the band, in this case Joe's great guitar skills, has to be masked by crappy over production on a ton of sappy ballads that suck.

fucking JOE PERRY everyone THE SINGLE GREATEST GUITARIST EVER
bassmaster9860 1 year ago
i'm no genius, but slash's sound is derived mostly from perry and hendrix, rather than page... some particular songs of aerosmith in which slash's guitar sound is quite similar, are home tonight and back in the saddle. both from the album "rocks" of '76..

@jamesbonello1 i have to agree, slash looks so much like joe, the poses, the SOUND, everyone w/ half brain can notice that

Slash went to the school of Joe Perry and graduated with honors! Slash and I are the same age (43) and when we were a whopping 3 years old Joe had already landed a record deal with Aerosmith. Most "kids" our age back then looked up to guitarists like Joe. Who wouldn't. Slash is VERY F'n good but, Joe taught us all the licks... he sent us all to school!

why do you think slash is so good....... because he was influenced by this guy JOE PERRY!!!!!!
crushellcaines 1 year ago 19
@crushellcaines True thats y joe perry is better
KingNube 1 year ago 2
@crushellcaines Slash has a lot of influences and Joe Perry is not his 1st influence. Read more about that. If Perry wasn't there Slash would still be a kickass guitarist minus the little bit of Perry in him.
Tou make it like Perry is the reason Slash is so great but you know that ain't true.
