I know there's a bunch of people raving about these jokes, this era, these roasts...but no offense, these jokes are lame. I didn't laugh once. I feel like comedy was way too Conservative back then. Maybe I would've liked these jokes if I grew up in that era, but roasts nowadays are SO much better!
@Jackeldo Today, that would be tagged a racist slur and poor old Foster would be caught up in a scandal, be forced to publicly apologize and fork over a million bucks to charity, lose whatever endorsements he was making and drop out of public life. Back then, people were a little more thick-skinned.
I was in a castle in Wales at a medieval show whose MC was the spitting image of Foster Brooks. At the end of theevening he said, "For those of you who liked me, my name is (so and so), for the of you who didn't, my name is Foster Brooks."
These roasts were so classically funny and the comedians these days leave much to be desired. The only exception I can think of is Craig Ferguson who is truly funny and a comedic gem in a sea of rhinestones.
I met Foster through a business transaction in the late 1970's, at the height of his career. He impressed me as one of the nicest, most genuine, down-to-earth, generous persons I've ever met, and that was over 30 years ago! Truly a great guy: there was nothing "Hollywood" about him.
"I was there the night you asked Marcel Mastriani if innuendo was an Italian name for Preparation H." It took that classic joke a couple of seconds to sink in before everybody go it! He even had George Burns and Jack Benny looking at each other going "WTF did he just say?"
Two hours ago I started to do something else but then I accidentally discovered these old clips. Needless to say I have accomplished nothing other than laugh my head off. They don't make like this anymore and I am sure glad that these priceless moments have been captured and saved on film.
@dukundroz You know you can appreciate Johnny Carson without having to run down people like Letterman (Who Johnny thought was hilarious. Johnny even wrote jokes for Dave's monologue once Dave went to CBS.) Conan and Ferguson. They are very funny and their audiences love them.
The Dean Martin Roasts and The Carol Burnett Show were the best of TV EVER !!!! I laugh so hard I have to play all of them over and over just to hear everything...THANK YOU U-TUBE.............
The applause was real for the most part. There was a live audience. However, laugh tracks were dubbed in also. I used to watch this as a kid. All of the comedians were funny, but Foster Brooks was ALWAYS the best. He could make you laugh so hard you cried. And BTW, although he drank in his younger days, he was sober through most of his life. I miss him.
@JacquieMcLaid I was a hostage negotiator for 25 years. I married a bitch! My years of training can't even coax her vagina open more than once a month. @OldMrMemories Actually it is all part of his act.Foster quit drinking in the 1960's and never drank again till the day he died in 2001.But he was amazing at playing a drunk..:)
I'm 23 years old, love all the modern comedians that I've grew up on. But there is NOTHING that can compare to the classic greats. I wish we had more with this class and wit and talent today as they did back then. Thanks for the upload.
I remember seeing these as a kid when they were first broadcast and Foster was always a favourite. What amazed me about him was his incredible vocal control; the hiccups, the ability to drop an octave mid-sentence, the stumbled words etc. are extremely difficult to pull-off for an extended period of time. It was his art and he was a master.
I echo OweMe1Cannoli's words - thanks so much for posting. My kids are at least exposed to the legends we grew up with, and hopefully will see what rubbish is dished out today in comparison. Long may the likes of these super talents live on in these clips.
Minus the filth and 4 letter word factor, most comedians are pathetic shades of talent. The guys (and gal's) who worked under blue laws were phenomenal. The only comedian that can make me laugh hysterically is Gilbert Gottfried, for some reason. He is so ridiculous.
The timing, the audience reading. Sheer talent not comparable to anything today. The people on the deis all of these roasts are so young and many are missed. Young people today and in the future will never really now how it was but at least they have a place to see them.
CONTEXT is the most difficult thing to reestablish but many of these jokes need very little support but they are even more enjoyable when another dynamic or inside dig is gotten.
Preparation H is a cream for soothing hemorrhoidal swelling. But, it has to be spread by hand within one's posterial cheeks! In other words; "in you(r) endo." A pun based on the age-old stereotype of how Italian-Americans speak English as a second language . A stereotype that, seemingly like most everything else these days, is considered politically incorrect (for being potentially racist).
Crycomic, Thank you for explaining the Prep-H. How blind it was for me not to see-hear it. If I watched it enough times the endo might have clicked. I don't see this as racist, but yes I understand people have to be careful what they say as people are sue happy. Words are taken out of context .

@MiyazakiFan2009 I was very young when these came out but I did watch EVERY episode. My dad was great friends with Dean Martin and would go out and drink and smoke with him. @ColonialTwinFollies ...agreed....just be happy we got to be a part of it. I really feel sorry for my daughter and everyone else growing up in this era....Oh that was when Hollywood actually earned their money and made us laugh without vulgar jokes. end of an era
@cuteiswhatiaimfor93 You are correct sir. You had to have talent, you couldn't just come out grab your crotch and cuss. You never see funny movies anymore either, for instance: It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, now there's a movie my friend! Cheers from Texas!
@SpaceAceTX Exactly my point. This is when people were naturally funny, and didn't have to cuss every other word. True, that comedy is somewhat funny today, but after a while things get boring, and repetative. I could watch this 500 times in a row and STILL laugh.
Foster Brooks is STILL an absolute riot...Never, never has there been an actor who could play a cold-stoned drunk betterr than he! We miss you Mr. B-B-B-Brooks!
Foster Brooks was only acting drunk. That was his act that he is best known for. It is an incredible talent to pull that off so convincingly you actually thought he was drunk.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This dude is soo friggin drunk! He must have had a monster hangover the next day. I thought for sure he'd barf on Carson. Thats the thing about Vegas. They're constantly refreshing your drinks at the Casinos.
LosAngeleno1959: You be wrong, bro. That was Foster Brooks' act. He wasn't a drunk but played one, and did it more convincingly than perhaps any other comic. In this routine from 35 years ago, as in many others of his you can find on YouTube, he's stone-cold sober, but in character and on target. Appreciate the talent. Obviously, he fooled you!
I've got this old comedy record of all of Foster Brooks' roast jokes. In the liner notes it says that he moved to Hollywood to become a singer. After a few unsuccessful years a club owner told him (right before going on stage) to "try something new, like entertaining the crowd". So, he did this character that his dad used to do to crack up the family and the rest is hilarious history.
I see Dean Martin, Foster Brooks, Johnny Carson (of course), Rich Little, Red Foxx, Dionne Warwick, Joey Bishop, Dom Deluise, Bob Newhart, Jack Benny, George Burns, Soupy Sales, & George Gobel... but I can't make out who's to the right of George Burns or who's on the far left at 0:06. Any ideas?
Foster: I was there when Johnny asked Marcello Mastriani if the word "innuendo" (in-u-endo) was Italian for "Preparation H" ! You gotta love Foster Brooks!
More proof that Foster Brooks was *unquestionably* one of the most hilarious entertainers in history.
The greatest thing about the 1970's is that it was correct to be politically incorrect. So then... has our society made any "progress" since then..?
I won't keep opening that can of worms, but consider this: in today's intolerant political climate, a guy like Foster Brooks would have a tough time breaking into show business at all... let alone making it to primetime. Food for thought.
Depends which side of the fence one was on ! Go ahead if your white and start telling black jokes in the subay in Harlem or like venue. Today ! Tolerance is what the age of the ruler makes it !
These men really knew their Craft. Sadly almost everyone on that stage is gone now,. but At least we have these tapes to remind us What great times those were.
I knew Foster Brooks by reputation only until just now. This was brilliant. This is one of the clearest demonstrations I've ever seen of the idea that the delivery is what makes the joke. The jokes are there and they're good, but he could without question be reading the phone book and still getting laughs. Outstanding.
I saw it live and it has lost nothing in the passing of time

Have you ever noticed that ppl who watch these shows are the nicest ones. No swearing, etc., really go on other subjects and u get yr throat cut.
empressoffrance 2 years ago 6
Yupp, that's bc they had something that is totally and sorely missing today... real wit and charisma. Now, its all about looking bad, and dominant.

watch my video of dean martin drunk skit with fosterbrooks its funny

Foster Brooks was only acting drunk. That was his act that he is best known for. It is an incredible talent to pull that off so convincingly you actually thought he was drunk.
But he wasn't!

This dude is soo friggin drunk! He must have had a monster hangover the next day. I thought for sure he'd barf on Carson. Thats the thing about Vegas. They're constantly refreshing your drinks at the Casinos.

Foster didn't drink; that was his act.
ramey58 2 years ago 4
LosAngeleno1959: You be wrong, bro. That was Foster Brooks' act. He wasn't a drunk but played one, and did it more convincingly than perhaps any other comic. In this routine from 35 years ago, as in many others of his you can find on YouTube, he's stone-cold sober, but in character and on target. Appreciate the talent. Obviously, he fooled you!

Class! I love watchin Martin crack up all the time to Foster!

"I was row--I was roooow...I was roooowling in the aisles. (lmao) Some yo-yo tied my shoestrings together (lmfao)."

The guy on Foster's right is Martin Milner from Adam 12.

The time link came too late; it's more like 0:05... the person to the left of Foster Brooks as he's standing up. Who's that?
mubirshu 2 years ago
Rich Little

Sorry, no, I mean our left (Foster's right). The guy with the sandy blond/light brown hair.
mubirshu 2 years ago
I see Dean Martin, Foster Brooks, Johnny Carson (of course), Rich Little, Red Foxx, Dionne Warwick, Joey Bishop, Dom Deluise, Bob Newhart, Jack Benny, George Burns, Soupy Sales, & George Gobel... but I can't make out who's to the right of George Burns or who's on the far left at 0:06. Any ideas?

Perfect craftsmanship in characters gone but not forgotten. They brightened many moments for us that might have remained dark.

These men really knew their Craft. Sadly almost everyone on that stage is gone now,. but At least we have these tapes to remind us What great times those were.
jd426999 2 years ago 11
I knew Foster Brooks by reputation only until just now. This was brilliant. This is one of the clearest demonstrations I've ever seen of the idea that the delivery is what makes the joke. The jokes are there and they're good, but he could without question be reading the phone book and still getting laughs. Outstanding.
