LOL I rated this up because of your spot on description. In amny ways this goal was bad for England and Owne because it hyped him up for so long and people expected more than he could deliver.
adrian ilie vs colombia and im not saying this cuz im romanian...unique smart sensational goal...if ronaldinho would had scored it u all agree with me
this isn't the best goal of france 98 - however, i agree with you that this is the ONLY reason why Owen has been overated. I consider players like Agbonlahor, and Defoe better in their current form - and should get preference over Owen!
Owen was crazily good when he was young. He was European Footballer of the Year in 2001, three years after this goal. I don't think he has been overrated when you look at his goals to game ratio, its still immense. Defoe and Agbonlahor are good players but Owen at his best was in another stratosphere, world-class; one of the most talented finishers on earth. Injuries and going to Newcastle have blighted his career.
lol nice australian bias, but i'll allow it! (because owen is shit)
although he doesn't get the breaks, always injured, and when he wasn't during the time at Real Madrid, he did great. but was gotten rid of simply because Raul, is like a Prince there. Always given a spot even if he doesn't perform
He's nog playing for everton, you fucking cunt! Owen is playing for newcastle, and he've done a few goals, but think of all his injurys? how good was he for 4-5 years ago?
thats true but i dont think it has to do with mental strength, as most have grown up in much harder surroundings than the europeans or even south americans. seems more of culture shock, i know how they feel. a lot of people from the former soviet nations move abroad to make better money and run away from corrupt governments but they feel they left half their soul back in the motherland. but now that russia is losing its identity and becoming americanized, it should start becoming easier...
haha well a lot try to make it easier and just forget their beginnings and totally assimilate to the new nation.. and while usually becoming "successful" they often become terrible and greedy human beings. england is a little bit better but here in the USA, its almost a fact, that an immigrant, doesn't matter where from, Japan, Kenya, wherever.. it will take 5 years max for him/her to become complete shit and a believer of the "dog eat dog" way of living. i guess footballers have it a bit better
anyways i'm totally oversimplifying and its hard to explain anything on youtube, but my whole point was that it is easier for some to adapt than others. but on the other hand the players who come with this risk usually carry a smaller price tag.
the fact you use the word roster shows you're from america or something and clearly don't know what you're on about. ronaldo got 8 goals in 2002. you call him shit-nobody shit can do that on the biggest stage. he even got 2 in the final, the biggest match in the world and he performed.
heh. very typical idiot sports fan, taking the word of the "experts" instead of your own opinion. I watched EVERY SINGLE GAME of the 2002 world cup. Ronaldo was fat even then. The team was very hard-working, and Ronaldinho was the offensive-MVP. Rivaldo did great too, though he always took that disgraceful dive against Turkey during that corner kick. Regardless, being the 1-top on the best team in the tournament, does not mean he "performed." And I didn't need ESPN's stats to reach that.
I think Ronaldo performed well with that 8 goals. really. the thing that he is fat or not doesn't make a sense, because when he wasn't injured, he _always_ was the number 1 striker in the whole world. he would score goals if he was even a ton. weight doesn't make a phenomen.
about Owen I agree that he is a bit over rated. these kind of over rated players (like Beckham) shall play in the US. but please don't buy the whole FOOTBALL -not called soccer- like you did basketball for example.
Owen blatantly isn't OVER rated. People always slag him off, but he is England's 4th top scorer of all time and has scored bags and bags of goals when he has played. 186 goals in 365 career appearances speaks for itself.
comeon you know that's not true, they've consistently been one of the best national teams on the planet, and were just unstoppable in the several year period when all their greats where in their prime, (excluding the 2002 world cup). The one thing I don't like about France is it's more of a U.N./African team, rather than a French one.
bro, bro, bro this was not the best goal of the world cup 98. Need i remind u of dennis bergkamps goal against argentina, that was pure class, this is good but its too unoriginal
these days hes not even good. never gets a touch of the ball and is weak. scored a tap in against ESTONIA from an inch perfect cross. apart from that done NOTHING the whole game. When he came back and played for england B, Mclaren was like "just the goal, the icing on the cake wasnt there". Since when was 1 goal for a striker whose supposed to be world class and playing against a B international side icing on the cake? People like Mclaren just defend him and his poor performances like that
"single biggest reason" he's over-rated -- it looks like just cause to rate him to him to me. Well, this, and his 35 OTHER goals wearing the Three Lions. And his European Player of the Year award. And the Owen Cup Final. Are these the unspoken other reasons why Michael Owen is over-rated?

He may not be Ronaldo, but I thank God he's not Rooney either. At least Owen isn't suspended as often as he is available, and has scored a competitive goal in the last three years.
you know fuck all you mug, hes a top class goal poacher hes no ronaldo or rooney, hes michael owen, if you new anythink about football ud understand his worth, and england dont play 18 year olds for no reason
haHA! what about Walcott. i don't think he got to play in Germany but that's beside the point.. English national team is always a major disappointment and a disgrace considering the level of the EPL. Michael Owen is not a bad player, he has tons of experience and drive (hunger), but he is hugely over-rated

the only thing that's good in this goal is that he runs fast. no technique

ya.. at the world cup.. against argentina.. and 18 years old with no experience... easy
comparing goals is like comparing apples to oranges, but at least you can say for this one, he did it all by himself.
