@jltayl2 It did say it was a light hearted look. I took that to mean it was supposed to be funny. When you live your life with autism, sometimes it can be hard to find many things to smile and laugh about. I feel this was well intended, a humorous break from the trauma of meltdowns, uncommunicative periods and hours lost in stimming. For education on autism, youtube may not be the best place to look. To all those with ASD who take things very literally- no, most people do not think those with autism have laser eyes or that they lay eggs... but it IS a common myth that "Autistics cannot have children because nobody would have sexual relations with them" and there are several myths about why individuals with ASD have poor eye contact, including "They are an empty shell" or "They lack the ability to connect on ANY level to other human beings." Most myths center on autistic ppl being inhuman.
@rayray695 I have AS and I am married and plan to have children. True, some people with autism may not be able to relate to other people well enough to find someone to marry, and they may not be able to cope with children, but some of us can and do.

Oh my goodness, this video is not what I would call a lighthearted look into autism myths. I think this is quite disturbing and even quite offensive actually. For one thing all you do on every single page is refer to people with autism as "autistics.........", you're talking about individuals as if they're nothing but the disorder and having a great deal of fun at their expense. I'm a mother of a child with autism and I have seen a lot of things but this is outrageously cruel.

Wtf this is not a joke like take it seriously.......I have never heard of any of these so called Myths....This Video is so wrong I can't believe it.......
Very interesting! I wonder, though, about how and where these myths originated. Most of them seem very far-fetched to me, although I've heard the mercury poisoning theory before.
About myth 3, I don't like to make contact, because it's very uncomfortable. It's ridiculous that people would believe that I or any other Autistic would have laser eyes. These myths are ridiculous.
MMr shots do cause autism.I dont give a fuck what studies they have. They will tell you no because so many lawsuits would make these pharmicudical companies go bankrupt. So its a big cover up.If they stand by there product and really know the thermisal in the mmr shots dont cause autism then why the fuck did they take thermisal out of the shot.thermisal is a mercury based substance.look at symtoms of mercury poisioning, there identical to autism. The government is crooked niggers.
You got it wrong. Its hard to accept it sometimes, but everyone gets something wrong every now and then. MMR shots have been proven not to cause autism. Are you sure you actualy have autism? 1) Never self diagnose.
@cpmc1 its not the shot itself.its the thermisol in the shot and yes it has been proven to cause brain disorders. Why do think they dont put thermisol in mmr shots anymore? Its an admission of guilt in itself.Thermisol is a mercury based substance and all people with autism have a high level of mercury in there body.where do you think this mercury comes from. The little mercury fairy. For every study you show me ill show you 2 studies that prove it does.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! lol. This is so wonderful. I'm tempted to show it to my Mom if she might not take it the wrong way. Sometimes she thinks it is her fault.
@RobingdfelowsLady I know how she feels. I have Aspergers Syndrome (a mild form of autism), and I constantly blame myself for everything. By the way, if your mother seems distant, never take that as a sign that she is indifferent; your mother cares for you - she probably has difficulty expressing it.
Very interesting method of educating. This reminds me of the genius way that Sasha Baron-Cohen (not Simon, XD) plays on blatant hyperbole in order to highlight profound biases people harbour even though they may not be aware of it.
It saddens me that people judge me based upon my neurological configuration without getting to know me. They may not actually believe I have no tear ducts, but they certainly believe that if harmed, I will not cry.
Well of course all autistics *are* related to Bill Gates, just as all humans are related to each other, and to vampire bats and slime molds, for that matter. Of course, I'd rather admit to being related to a slime mold than to a greedy SOB like Bill Gates...
@tualhaz Greedy? When was giving away $40 BILLION become a greedy act? That kinda took the wind out of my hate Bill band wagon. Man I miss that wagon, it was painted red and had flames!
@Talmore: Sure, sure. He has about $100 billion, which he got by running a ruthless monopoly that has crushed numerous competitors and foisted inferior and insecure software upon the entire world. Then he gave away about $2 billion of it (not sure where you're getting that $40 billion figure), through a foundation that has received plenty of criticism on its own. Yeah, he's a saint.
Actually this is funny. I never thought of how stupid these arguments were until you made fun of them. Why did people not like this?
Nothing funny about chelation therapy though. I would love to see studies later this decade that showed the effects of those agents on a child's body. I cannot imagine how terrible it is for the child's health to go through that.
Concerning the jigsaw puzzle - true we do not like to be compared to puzzles, but here is a much better connection: a rubics cube. Many people struggle to figure it out and see it as a complex process that they have no patience to figure out. But in reality, it is fairly simple. There are simple patterns to follow and not really that hard once you get it - you just need to take the time to get to know the person
Very well done way of gently confronting some misperceptions about ASDs. Thank you for including the one about mercury too, which is so important to address.
I loved this. Honestly I may have to remember these when someone who is totally ignorant of autism bugs us with a rude question....It is a reminder to laugh at those myths that are tough to eradicate. <3
Children don't die from autism, but they do die from the diseases that vaccines protect them from. Do you really want to put your child's life in danger because of an unproven theory that autism is caused by vaccines?
Before the measles vaccine in 1963 around 400 to 500 people died from the disease each year.
I used to think my son's severe autism was related to vaccine damage, mostly because that was popular in the autism community....but after all these years....I'm not so sure...it does seem more likely it could be genetic..or perhaps some of us are more sensitive to vaccines...and we have bad reactions.....in any event, I love my son for who he is and so be it...it's not always easy...in fact, seldom is...but I have learned a lot from him...and God has been gracious even when I'm fed up...
@kgaccount: I used to believe autism was always genetic, but nowadays I have serious doubts about this.............and why has the media not given any serious coverage towards such?
The people who did the study on the MMR vaccine have said it wasn't the cause, it was only an unproven, now proven false theory. Autism may not have gone up at all. People forget that it didn't exist before 1940's and the definitions has gotten broader since then. Back in the day, I wouldn't have been diagnosed with autism at, just a nerd. My dad nor my uncle nor my grandma were diagnose with it, but they definetly have it.
Measles shots did not make this Neanderthal Autistic. Just badly damaged me! Gut hurts like Hades! Have to stay close to bathroom. Missed 3rd yr of high school though that a blessing! (Away from bullies) Other countries have confirmed Dr Wakefield's findings. Google. They want to abort us! But get glutamate out of the food supply, IVs and vaccines under 40 names it is allowed to hide under (google truthinlabeling) Then undamaged, Autists will still exist and we will take Humanity to the stars!

I confess - the egg myth was probably my fault. When I was a kid being bullied, some of the older kids at school kept on asking me where do babies come from, trying to imply I was so stupid I didn't know where they came from, etc. So I told them babies came from an egg. Which, in my inner monologue, made complete sense, as a baby requires a fertilized egg to grow.
:(
Sorry. This Aspie apologizes to the other chickadees. Bullies are just so tiring. I never felt like talking to them.
MMR vaccine does not cause autism! if the child is predippose to the autism spectrum it can speed up and magnify the effects on that child. autism can come out of no where OR be genetic! i agree that living or/and working with autistics can give you a better view of what can effect the condition. btw, dadsmonster08 you can't possibly know EVERYTHING about it as scientists themselves still haven't even barely scratched the surface. they have no idea why it happens or what it is exactly!
My daughter did not have vaccines, yet she was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old. She is now re diagnosed with Asperger's...however, I have to say that I am glad I did not vaccinate because I have seen some children whose Autism was (I believe) triggered by vaccines. We are all different.
@mayknmusic: "because I have seen some children whose Autism was (I believe) triggered by vaccines................." I'm afraid this is quite likely case for the VAST majority of kids who actually do have autism.
@JohnnyDart76 I think there are many problems with vaccines, including autism. The problem is, you cannot tell which child is susceptible just by looking at him/her. So it truly is a shot in the dark.
still we have been to the docs i kno the facts and i kno the signs not saying i kno everything about it cuz im learning every day. but i kno that it can cause it.
Although a lot of people think that shots bring forth autism, it still does not make it true. During the dark ages, for the longest time, people thought cats transmitted the black plague. They went on killing all the cats. Guess what happened then... Autism is not a disease caused by something you ate, or some sort of reaction. It is a combination of genes; it can appear on one brother, but not the other.
dude it is possible that you are right, but the fact is the doctors dont know if vaccines cause autism yet. they are researching it but they dont know
Only stupid people wouldn't read the introduction and see that this is a comedy piece, making fun of the crap that's being put out there constantly by NT people who don't understand being differently-brained.
Although I don't find the puzzle analogy offensive at all. I like it! My life and the way I think CAN be puzzling to my NT friends, and why should I deny that? (They can be puzzling to me, too!)
Wishing I had green blood that glowed in the dark though... would be cool!
I always thought the puzzle with the ribbon was related to the fact that to me, everything is a puzzle waiting to be solved... I thought it was a perfect symbol for me, and the way I see the world. I guess it can have many, individual interpretations...
I think the real message of this video is that Autistic people are humans too. They have the rights to live as normal as they can and should not be judged just because they lack of social skills and so on. My brother is autistic and I love him even if he's not normal. But he is already amazing!
Waste of time. It's poisoning, result of med / gov fraud, and almost everyone is going to eventually die of a disease caused from the same, so go ahead and put 'em down, cuz, brother, your turn is coming, and then it's eternal Hell............
i think the point is not in the "myths" which i think are supposed to be amuzing jokes that lead to providing information about autism and the misunderstandings that some people may have however i would have liked to see "real" myths, like the belief that all autistics have one super talent, like counting toothpicks (thanks rainman!) or that all autistics have low iqs, or that all autistics are any one thing or the other
This video would be worth something..if these "myths" were something people were talking about...only heard of the mercury. The others are so off the wall...a waste of a possible good video. Try real "Myths" next time...Cheri
These are the myths that the people who spend tens of millions of dollars campaigning "on our behalf" think are realities. People like Jenny McCarthy think it is somehow brave and fighting against the establishment to believe them. Those of us who live on the spectrum and have to listen to people devaluing our lives every day feel that such a belief makes Jenny a monster.
Wasn't too crazy about this one. The real problem I had with this video is that it refers to people with autism as "Autistics". Just because they have autism does not mean that that is what they should be referred to as. They are also sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and yes sometimes they are mothers and fathers. They are a lot more than just their diagnosis.
That's a personal issue I feel. I know plenty of autistics who are annoyed when people DON'T call them "autistics" because to downplay their autism by referring to them as "people with autism" in a way implies that there's something about it that is shameful and therefore needs to be hidden. It's a pride issue for them. And not that all autistic people like it, but honestly I've seen far more objection to "autistics" from people WITHOUT autism than with it. Seems to me like a parental issue.
woah... lots of anger on this comment page... though i do have to say that people should be grateful when there's nothing wrong with them. i had a teacher try to get me on add medicine, just because i was a little difficult when i was little. it's not fun... by the way, could i get the name of the music you used for this? it was perfect for it and i loved it!
many children are being diagnosed "autistic" when really they are, poisoned by toxins, don't be mad at me, be mad at the doctors who are making these calls , and don't be so fucking self absorbed, be grateful you are ok, and not sick and unable to express yourself with words, but then a being self absorbed, and socially disfunctional is a symptom if autism, born or regression, why am I arguing with you>?>? FORGET IT
not the best video, I know a lot of children with autism and most don't like to be referenced to as "autisics". I know a lot that can talk, type and go about life as every one else-not that they are "cured" or anything.
Have you had the tests to see what your metals/mineral counts is? My son has, lots of mercury, lots of lead. He ate well, yet never absorbed the minerals. Your video was touching, but not all that accurate when it comes to mercury. Also, have your testosterone level checked, I can bet you that it is very high. Nice video though..
as a side note: in some cultures it's considered disrespectful to look into someone else's eyes... for example for a child to look into the eyes of an adult... and in the animal world that is considered a challenge for a fight... so I avoid looking directly into my pets' eyes (especially for too long) And in general, there are times it is uncomfortable to be stared at.
I can't help but think you're joking to make a point. Exaggerating, just to prove that autistics are no different from anyone else. First and foremost they are people who deserve love, respect and understanding... but most of all love. And who doesn't deserve love?
i've never heard of any of these myths..i dont have autism but im around kids that have it..i do my practicum in a class that has kids with autism..i really got attached to these kids in less than a week..i lvoe them to death and they are really smart..they just have a hard time socially..i've never met an autistic adult tho..i want to become a special ed teacher and work with kids who are severe/profound..more specifically i want to teach austistic kids.
Plus I would have to say the way I was raised was like this I went to regular elem. school and mid. School with no Special ED ever, and now highschool I have a 504 Sect. to help with testing. Also I was encouraged to take up music when I was young so I play Cello and Piano, but I also sing, so for me I had to get over being afraid of speaking or social interaction and I have for the most part. Though I like to talk, but also write too.
I have AS and thought the first one was pretty funny. But in reality I'm not sure if I want to have kids, just cause I had epilipsy also when I was young and I wouldn't want kid to go through the same thing I did, cause Epilpsy can in some cases be genetic.
I would rather adopt than have a kid but that could change in time.
Lol on myth about Bill Gates, really and I was born in south america? :)
I'm not annoyed by the puzzle myth at all, actually I rather am a puzzle at times and enjoy it.
First of all, Autism isn't cureable, at least not yet. Secondly, Autism comes in so many varieties. 2 people with the same diagnosis can have vastly different problems. Its not like all autistic people is trapped inside a shell that completely disables them from comminicating with the rest of the world. Last, Your word frankly dosnt really count. Come back with a Ph.D and 12 years of experience in autistic individuals, and THEN we can have a talk.
I have experience with autism, and I know there is a difference between "born" autism and regression, and your right, we probably cannot repair all the neurological damage, and yes there are different degrees of severity, and I still say if you can type and talk you don't have autism, (not really)
yes some can, don't shoot your mouth off at me idiot, I know autism, I live it everyday, people born with autism are different than children who regress, they are piggybacking poisonings ontop of a much smaller subset of the population, to cause precisely this sort of animosity, this bickering
Hey nmste, do you know how ignorant you sound?, you act as if autistic is suppose to mean stupid, dod you and Adam Jasinski share the same crack pipe or something? you realyl have not studied autism very much, I am autistic myself but I am able to speak and type as well, please bone up on the facts about autism and do so in total isolation from TV, News Media and Music as well, do this for not 12 years, do it for 20 years, then come back and talk to us in 20 years.

I have personal experience with autism, and I never said you were stupid, although, autistic behaviors can certainly appear stupid, I base my opinions on personal experience, I am not going to tell myself that I imagined my sons regression just for the sake of your fucking ego, just because you are high functioning enough to know what a victim ,is and that you don't want to think of yourself as such,I wish I was igronant to this mess,
I'm finding being reffered to as a 'victim' quite offenccive I know so many people like you. Yapping away like you know everything about autistum and AS well guess what you dont have it and no matter how much experiance you have you'll never understand. So shut it you do not know the in's and out's of an autistic mind.
the people who perpetuate these mths (ignorant beliefs aimed at discriminatinng against Autism and Autistic people) are clever manipuators who make a lot of money out of "selling fears" and false "cures".
Thank you for this video. When have high-performance Asbergers, so I struggled with a different set of myths, sometimes. But it is just as dehumanising to be 'put on a pedestal'. It is just another way of skirting around actually looking a person in the face and accepting them as they are.
Okay, to everyone who was too slow to get it, the MYTHS are not real. Look at the RESPONSES. These myths are all simply exaggerations of misleading or harmful ways of thinking about autistic people (autistic people are animals, autistic people can't have children, autistic people have a direct link to the surreal, autistic children are retarded, so it is okay to bully them, &c.).
lol, yea. It seems that autistic people (and everyone else that has a brain or common sense) are more smarter than those people who belive in those myths.
Zeitgeistend, it's a satire of what people have really believed: In the past, it was generally felt that disabled people couldn't have kids, or shouldn't if they could. I remember when people thought autistics didn't shed tears. New Agers still believe that autistics are telepathic geniuses who channel advanced alien intelligence. The Bill Gates connection is overrated, and the puzzle piece concept IS a myth which annoys a lot of we autistics who don't feel it applies to us. And so on!
At first I did not get this video, but then it clicked...GREAT JOB! As someone below said, the myths are not real, the answers to the myths are what you need to focus on...the myths are just to give it a bit of humor. Again, Great Job! :) <3 kirasmumm
I really do not believe that people believe these myths ... I think they were used as a way to convey the other part of the video. The truths. I work in a home for autistic children and young adults, and I wish more people would watch a video like this before they ask me ridiculous questions.
I dont mean any disrespect but im curious, are Autistic people capable of communicating like Normal people, what do normal people do that Autistic people can't do ? and again im just curious i mean no disrespect =)
ADsFiinesT: Autistics may have trouble with things like "normal" social interaction, or they may get sensory overload in what you would consider a "normal" situation like a grocery store. Many autistic people speak just as non-autistics do. Many find writing or typing easier than speech so they might write or use a Lightwriter (look it up).
Thats part of my reason i dont look at people but im beter now and i some times feel strange when my freinds dont make eye contact with me when there talken
wow i played this for part of my music gcses and nearly sounded as good as this maybe the tape is lying about some were at my parents house lol

Talmore 1 year ago

JohnnyDart76 1 year ago
The people who did the study on the MMR vaccine have said it wasn't the cause, it was only an unproven, now proven false theory. Autism may not have gone up at all. People forget that it didn't exist before 1940's and the definitions has gotten broader since then. Back in the day, I wouldn't have been diagnosed with autism at, just a nerd. My dad nor my uncle nor my grandma were diagnose with it, but they definetly have it.

@Falconhawk123 That's exactly what makes sense to me! It gets so annoying when people think that autism appeared out of nowhere in the 1940s.

Wasn't too crazy about this one. The real problem I had with this video is that it refers to people with autism as "Autistics". Just because they have autism does not mean that that is what they should be referred to as. They are also sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and yes sometimes they are mothers and fathers. They are a lot more than just their diagnosis.
roscam1284 3 years ago
That's a personal issue I feel. I know plenty of autistics who are annoyed when people DON'T call them "autistics" because to downplay their autism by referring to them as "people with autism" in a way implies that there's something about it that is shameful and therefore needs to be hidden. It's a pride issue for them. And not that all autistic people like it, but honestly I've seen far more objection to "autistics" from people WITHOUT autism than with it. Seems to me like a parental issue.
JackScheerer 3 years ago
I'm an autistic.
Anyone who think of my autism as something defective can go fuck themselves.
It's like saying a black person is a 'person with black skin', to get a racist to accept him.
Or 'person suffering from homosexuality' instead of 'homosexual'.
I'm a son, an eccentric, a musician, a gamer, a youtube browser, a white, and an autistic.
The idea to put it as a 'person with autism', no problem... but if you do that 'to be polite', then you're insulting my personality and mind.

as a side note: in some cultures it's considered disrespectful to look into someone else's eyes... for example for a child to look into the eyes of an adult... and in the animal world that is considered a challenge for a fight... so I avoid looking directly into my pets' eyes (especially for too long) And in general, there are times it is uncomfortable to be stared at.

First of all, Autism isn't cureable, at least not yet. Secondly, Autism comes in so many varieties. 2 people with the same diagnosis can have vastly different problems. Thank you for this video. When have high-performance Asbergers, so I struggled with a different set of myths, sometimes. But it is just as dehumanising to be 'put on a pedestal'. It is just another way of skirting around actually looking a person in the face and accepting them as they are.
Ilmatar7 4 years ago
Okay, to everyone who was too slow to get it, the MYTHS are not real. Look at the RESPONSES. These myths are all simply exaggerations of misleading or harmful ways of thinking about autistic people (autistic people are animals, autistic people can't have children, autistic people have a direct link to the surreal, autistic children are retarded, so it is okay to bully them, &c.).

And so on!

ADsFiinesT: Autistics may have trouble with things like "normal" social interaction, or they may get sensory overload in what you would consider a "normal" situation like a grocery store.
